FINANCIAL, NEw Yonrk, May 7.—([Speelal Telogram to the BrE.|—SToCKs,~There was very lit- tle of significance in the stock markes until the bank statement came out to-day. St Paul preferred surprised traders with a sharp advance of 1' per cent, and was more active than it has been for a lonz time. The point on it was that a clique of rich Chieago over- ators had been buying it on the theory that it ‘was the cheapest 7 per eent stock on the lisg, and they were credited with the intention of manipulating a 10 per cent advance in it Wabash was another bull ecard. Gould brokers were large buyers of it and advised their friends that it was certain to have a big boom. New England was rather weak. Ob- serving buyers, however, claim that the bu ng was by the best class of people. The bank statement showed a decrease of $2,600,- 000 in reserve and was the signal for a drive at the market by the bears, The whole list was sold down a fraction, Missouri Pacific being the lowest stock on the list. Contrary to ex- pectations, however, the market rallied after the drop, quickly leaving a little profit to short sellers, The cause of the heavy de- crease in the bank statement was alleged to be heavy withdrawals by the Chicago banks in consequence of Chicago becoming a a reserve city. The feeling on grangers con- tinued to be very bullish, and Chicago was a large buyer ot Northwestern & St. Paul pre- ferred, taking large blocks of tha latter at the top prices of the day. At noon the market was steady, the sales to that hour ageregating 86,000 shares. In the last hour the market was characterized by a drop more or less general in prices throughout the list. North- western was sold down nearly 1 per cent and 8t. Paul preferred broke on offerings of long stock bought some days ago. Fancy stocks were all weak, Lake Erie & Western selling down to the lowest point reached in several weeks. ‘The market closed very soft atabout the lowest point of the day. The total sales were about 200,000 shares. GovERNMENTS—Government bonds were dull but steady. YESTERDAY’S QUOTATIONS. 1C. & N. W. do preferres Y. C Canada South’ n Central Pacilic.. Chicago & Alton.
