2 | THE WHEAT MANIPULATION, No Longer Any Donbt That The Olique Will Take Uash Wheat A STRONG FEELING PREVAILS, ore Gossip A3 to How the Deal Will Terminate—NRut Little Transace tions in Corn — General Market Quotatlons. CRICAGO PRRODUC ) MARKET. CricAGo, April 25— Special Telezram to the Bk, —\Wheat for May closed at 847 to-night, Kershaw & Co. having been steady sellers to-day, and “pegging” the market to prevent an advance, just as last weck they “pegeed” it to prevent a decline, May wheat wasat S41¢c at the very opening to-day, with very little offering. Ow Sunday the crowd felt for a long while that by persistent ham- mering it could get this option down under 8¢, and tried pertinaciously to do it. There was an improyed tone to cables and the pros- for a substantial de ase in the ‘‘visi- were good long before the official ficures were made public. But these inffuences had nothing to do with the advace of l¢ in the May option over Sunday. T'his was because faith in the wheat clique was increasing, If the cligue brokers had not relieved the ten- sion itis not casy to tell where May wheat would have gone to. AtSi'5e Kershaw sold liberally and sold until the market wasdown to to #ige. Dwight & Gillette had a selling order for somebody in May and the crowd took this. ‘The crowd wanted it all. The oflicial tigures, putting the decrease in wheat at 1,955,000 bushels, gave a_little impetus to the market and sent June to $i'e. There was just a little reaction after this, but it did not agount to anything. The news that the clique was making its arrangements with the banks. for not only tie mouth of May, but for June ana July, o the erowd courage. ‘There is not any longer, in the minds of any- body, a doubt that the cligue will take cash wheat. This, however, is about the only thing that is universally admitted. ‘Lhere is even the wildest sort of a division over whether May, June or July is to see the cul- mination of the manipulation. The clique traders themselves (and this is one of the queerest features of the deal) are apparently a8 much in the dark over this point as any- body else. This is explicable because Ros- enfeld & Co., for_instance, have had no orders except In May. Someother of the clique houses have had orders apparently to change over all their May either to Juné or July.' Part of the gossip oing about to-day wWas that one ot the cliques—some people be- lieve there are two—inade a proposition to the stronger and bigger of the two to com- T'he proposition, the story ran, was ed on the ground that it was too late lor combinations; but if wheat was for sale, the bigger chque added, it could be sold out in the pit and would be bought there. Corn was fairly steady Lo-day,butoperations in it were swall. May sticks under 5 even when wheat is at the strongest. m-ople who are given to talking “deals” are declar- ing it their belief that the clique must take nold of ‘corn to help out wheat. With the Iatter at near 80c and corn near 40c, it would not be such a dead sure thing to bring vast quantities of corn just to avoid buying wheat. ‘T'he latter is about as near a reason- able shipping basis as the cheaper grain, and certainly is in sharper demand from the mar. kets east of here. Provisions were dull and neglected. ‘Ihe markets in the aftarnoon were quiet ana without special change. ANU AL, NEW Yok, April 25.--[Special Telegram to the BrE.|—STocks.~Fully one-half of the trading in stocks up to noon to-day was in New England. 'The break in it last week of about 4 points, and the fact that the bull pool which had been operating in it for some time had liguidated, made the bears conrident sellers. The opening was J¢ per cent under Saturday’s close and the directors’ party at once began putting out a line of short stocks. Room traderss jumped in and sold with In- siders until a break of 2 per cent has been secured. About 5:50 o'clock there was some buying by people who thought a reaction might be secured, but the prevailing sentiment was that New England wou!d have to dritt lower before there would be any chavce for a bull movement n it. ‘The rest of the market ‘was very naturally affectea unfavorably by the sharp drop in New England, notwith- standing the fact that London prices were all 3 1o ¥ per cent higher.
