Curley Dobson, who lives a%hort dis- tance in the country, was arrested yester- day for keeping up the old drunk. He pleaded to be allowed to go home, and romised that he would go ‘“straight legged,” and at once, but his condition was such as to render him incapuble of performing the ‘“‘straight legged” clause of any such contract. The Citizens' State bank of Council Bluffs has commenced suit against the Billingsbly & Nanson commission com- pany, of St. Louis, for $600. 1t is claimed that the defendants H% roed to honor drafts drawn on them by McGregor Bros., of Imogenc, through this bank. The Me- Gregors got into a_financial pinch and two drafts were not honored by the de- fendants. Hence the suit. The BEE office is undergoing some radical changes in its appearance and conveniences. When completed it will beat even its own record, which it has maintained for several years, of bein, the finest newspaper ofiice in Counci Bluffs. The Nonpareil secks to poke fun at tbe improvements, but the old lady is harmless, and the work goes on just the same. The dear grandmother once in its history had the improvement fever herself. "She concluded to fix up 1ts bow- ing brick walls. To meet the expense she cut off four cases, and now the patch threatens to tumble off. The news from Dubuque that the fed- eral juages will not decide the saloon estion until tho supreme court passes ou the Kansas case, gives the active pro- hibitionists fresh ground for hope yester- day. The chiof point seems to be whether, sfter the state has allowed und encour- aged capital to invest in a certain busi- mess, it can then pass a law declaring the usiness criminal, and confiscating the perty without compensation. 1f there to b a compensation in such cases, ere will probably be a biz hole knocked the prohibition wall, If not, the lust jope will be gone for the saloon men. he predictions were numerous hero, on reccipt of the news from Dubuque yester- fay, that the outcome would be fuvora- blé 1o a move for bigh liceuse. — Sherraden ls still mnlml& cabinet pho- ncft per doz., best finish. The Doings In and About Council Bluffs Gathered Up Snugly. The Brondway Bridge, Manawa Rail- way and Union Depot — The Squabble Over Freight Transfers—Wonderful Watch —Churches, Strongthening the Boom, There are three important enterprises which each day makes more assured. One of these is the Broadway wagon bridge. That is counted on as almost as sure as if it was already 1n operation. Mr. Evans’ return from his recent trip east, and his report of the successful ar- rangement of many of the preliminaries, has given the public fresh reasons for be- ieving that the work will commence very soon. The bids are to be opened on the 21st, and the contract will be let on the 25th. This week there will be numerous sur fixing locations exuct, It is getting close to the time sct for actual work to com- mence, and when the dirt begins to fly, there will bea new jump in the prices of bottom propert, Another enterprise is the Lake Man- awa motor rail . J. K. Graves, of Dubugque, i here to-morrow, and the will be all settled so that the contract will doubtless be signed by Wednesday, This improve- ment will call for an expenditure of $145,000. “There scems every reason to believe that the Union depot project will move right along. The ize of the move 15 so great and involves 8o many interests that it is necessarily slow work to complete the preliminaries, The company has been buying some more lots within a few days, and yesterday it is said a eall was made for one-third of the stock (o be paid in, This looks like business. The news of the progress being made in these three enter s caused real a move livelicr yesterday, the ef perceptible. With the actual work on them, the real estate pr goup, not a peg at a time, but fairly There are many shrewd investors, are quictly picking up now all they arry, as the outlook is so bright as to promise much more than an ordinary profit on the investment. el kil Wonderful Handiwork, J. W. Cooper, of this city, has just completed a wonderful bit of carving, It is an ivory watch case, chain and charm. The whole is made from old billiard balls, and all cut out with a knife. The chain is a double linked, richly ornamented one, and the charm is spherical and in- side of it is a perfect little ball, How it was thus cut from one picee, without a joint or break is # mystery known only to the initiated. ~ The watch case is how- ever, the marvel of ull. It 1s a hunting case, stem-winder, and the cases are ornamented with the richest, finest carv- ing possible. The watch dial is one piece, the figures being carved in relief, and the whole ornamented very skill- fully. The novel watch and chain have been examined by some of the jewelers, who are enthusiastic in its praise, and it will doubtless soon be displayed in some of their windows, The case and chain were carved by Mr. Cooper for his father. The wearer of sucha watch can have the satisfaction of pousessiug not only a very unique treasure, but a beautiful one. Bt Fussing Over Freight, The difficulties between the Union Pa- cific and the Iowa lines seem to be get- ting more complicated, rather than near- ing asettlement. All of the lines here have quit transfering freight at the Union Pacitic depot and are doing the work at their own local depots. The Wabash is the only exception, and It will probably decide to pull out to-morrow. Itis said that the Union Pacific will refuse to re- ceive freights thus transferred unless the lowalines come to the old terms. It is further intimated that the fowa roads will in this event arrange to land their freight in Omaha by the Northwestern or B. gl\l. or both. There are numecrous predictions as to what will be tihe out- come of the tangle. —_—— Queer Work Kor Firemen. Yesterday the firemen instead of put- ting out a fire, sturted one. Instead of saving & house iiomn burning, they burned up a house, deliberately suaiting th blaze themselves. The building thus burned was a little frame house in Streetsville. The family which occupied it about two years ago haa the small pox and one member of the family died. The little house has been empty since then, and the talk of 1t being occupred ngnin alarmed the neighbors who feared that the house had not been properlf’ dis- infected. ‘The board of health concluded it was better to have the house burned, a compromise was made with the owner, by which he agreed to take $79 as dam ages, and 80 the torch was applied. The fire lads watched the flames, so that no damage might result to other property. s A Rare Reader. Miss Ella McBride gave an entertain- ment at the Y. M. C. A. hall yesterday afternoon. The audience was not large, nor was there an effort made to secure great numbers. Miss McBride gave the entertainment in compliance with the re- quest of some of the teachers and some of her friends, who desired to hear her rend. They were delighted, and their expectations more than met. The pro- grnmmu was a varied one, but n the hakespearian and dramatic selections, Miss McBride showed special talent. Those who heard her were so enthusias- tic that their praise will doubtless call forth a larger audience at some future date. Miss McBride intends remaining here for some weeks, and 1t is not un- likely that she will conclude to make her permanent residence here. ———— For Sate.
