It isfrom the Bank of America, at New York, that most of the gold is shipped from that city. ‘I'he toreign steamships sailin from this city now carry little or nogold, although the reverse was the case yours ago. The shipmemis of gold are not nerally on the bank's account. At & first glance persons might well suppose that when the demand arises for gold to send abroad the shipper would only have to send in his order for his hundreds of thousands to the sub treasury, where millions of specie are on deposit. Bub there are suflicient reasons why this plan will not work. “The syb treasury can pay out its coin_only to creditors of the government. With the bank of Ameries the associated banks keep on deposis constantly an enormous sum of gold, somotimes amounting to $10,000,000, I'n the members of the bank nassos ciation the Bank of Americs issues its own certiticates against theso deposits, redeemable on demand, — So when there is oceasion for making a xold shipment, the com is pre; d for that purpose in the rear oflice of that bank, here it is bagged and kegged and made ready for shipment, Kegs in which gold is d—specie Kkegs, as they are ealled—are made of extra hard wood. They must huve an extra iron hoop. Specie is not thrown loosely into a keg, nor, upon the other hand, is it carefully wrapped in tissue vaper and piled up one coin upon anothe Thoe keg serves only as u protection for eanvas bags, into which the gold is placed in the ordinary hit and miss fashion of pennies in a man's pocket. Into each keg goes $5,000, and ten bags fill a keg. In the interest of so- curity each keg is treated to what is tech- nically known among the shippe:s as the red-taping process. At cach end of the keg, in the projecting rim of the staves above the head, bored four holes at equidistant intervals, A piece of red tape is run through these holes, crossing on the head of the keg, and the ends finally meet in the center. At the point of meet- ing the tape is sealed to the keg's head by wax bearing the stamp of the shipper. Gold cros: the ocean very much as does every other kind of (l‘«'ifllt. without any special looking after. The ayerage rate of insurance i3 about §2,000 on a shipment of $1,000,000. There are ship- pers who do not insu Having to ship $1,000,000, they give it in different parts to half a_dozen “different vessels, 1tisa striet rule with some firms never to trust more than $250,000 at a time on any one ship. A certain party furnishes all the kegs for goid and packs them. ‘The man who does this is & monopolist in his way. Shippers of large amounts always lose a few dollars by abrasion, but not exceed- ing sixteen ounces on a million dollar shipment. The only pro- tection to be found against abrasion lics in the shipment of gold in bars instead of coin, Gold bars ure not readily obtained. eI “Brown's Bronchial Troches' are of great service in subduing Hoarseness. - SLANDER IN A FINGER-POINT, A Curious Suit Against a Con Singer. Cinemnati Enquirer: The principal at- traction at the People’s theatre this week is n dashing serio-comie, whose name ap- I} s on the bills as Miss Ada Burnet. Her favorite song is the familar “Dar's n New Coon in Town.” It took the au- dience by storm Sunday night. To give the act more effectiveness, Miss Burnet, while singing the refrain, stopped and emphasized the line, “Dar's a new coon m town,” by pointing directly to a col- ored man sitting in the front row of the first gallery. It scems that Rose was the colored man who had been made so conspicuous during the singing of the song on the previous evening.
