The County Bible society held its an- nual meeting last evening, with a union service at St. Paul's Episcopal church, the Presbyterians, Congregationalists and Baptists joining. Despite the bluster- ing weather there was a large congregation. The scene presented was strikingly suggestive of the increasing liberality among the churches and the weakening ol denominational se- clusions. It was a pleasing picture to see the Methodist divine, Rev. Dr. Me- Creary, reading the forms of vrayer without surplice or robe, while the r tor, Rev. I'. J. Mackey, in his ecclesiasti- cal s{mb led in the responses. Rev, Dr. ( 20 of the Buptist church, and Rev, . Crofts, of the (onxrugshunnl uum-h also participated. The chief address of the evening was by Rev. Mr. Hood, the state agent of the Bible society, He spoke mainly on the word of Giodas “The sword of the Spirit.” He pictured the constant fight against evil, which had been going on gince the I:-~g|1un|\ of the world, He claimed that the only safety to this coun- try, and to the 4, was the church of Godl, with the § Sy in the church, and the sword of the Spirit—the Bible. This was quick and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, It was quick to cure of sin, ynd heal wounded humanity. It was po convict and convert.
