Injunctions Issned Against the “Mint'” and “Phenix" Saloons, THE MILITIAMEN DISAGREE. A Council Bluffs Revivalist Stirring Up Sidney — Notes From Newsy Neola — O'Neill's Closing Night. Constrained to Restrain, Yesterday there were two more injune- tions 1ssued, one against the “Mint,” the other against the “Phanix.” ‘These two were in the original batch, the petitions in which were filed three months ago. These cases were peculiar in some re- spects, and henee were taken under ad- vi ent. Jerry Meyers was running the place now known the Mint, when the petition was filed for an injunction aguwinst him and the pla Jacob Erns- dorf was then running the Phanix When the matter eame up for a final hearing it was shown that Meyers was no longer engaged in selling liquor at the place designated in the petition, It was also shown that Ernsdorf had quit the business and left the city. The change about did not prevent the writs issuing, however, and in accordance with the peremptory order of Judge Thornell, the clerk yesterday issued the writs of tem- porary injunction and in the afternoon they were placed in the hands of the sheriff, who served them t evening. The saloon injunctions already is<ued canse much comment. Some of those who have been obli, to close are feel- ing sore over the fact that some have been allowed to run, and they not. They are anxious to see all closed, closed, s0 as to make a square de around. Others think that there has be en special vengeance wreaked on mans. Four German hotels obliged to close their bars, leading hotels are not yet with, In fact there are numerous charges of partiality on the part of those pro. cuting these cases, It 18 understood that the reasons given for not closing all the saloons at once y to the effect that it was deemed better for the city not to do so, but to take one batch and thus allow time for o «hl- it of busine < feared ths et of closing at once aad cau: acated at nee would be har mful tever cl I ns for sympu ere is one whos culiarly hard. Peter Bechte oldest and most respected citi is the one above all others for whom there is much sympathy felt. He has been one of the foremost in all public improve- ments. He has kept a hotel here for years, and when matters of public mo- ment' have arisen, emergencies when public spirited men were greatly needed, he has always been to the front. In the struggle to force the Union Pacific to muke its terminus here he was the man who gave his personal bond for $10,000 in order to make the tight in the courts. The result of that contest was more to dvantage of this city than any other 1 118 history. Since then he strained himself tinancially in order to build a hotel which would be a credit to the city and in helping other enter- prises. Now past the prime of life, with all the burdens upon him, he fecls that to have his hotel singled out as & special target is far from generous. The Kiel house, the Creston ho Neumeyer's hotel are also enjoined. They are owned by vounger men, who are perhaps better able to stand the change of circumstances. put up good buildings here, erty owners and nuturpn ng citizens they are entitled to some consideration. The new law is a law, however, and as sueh must be enforced. The writs of in- junction are being obeyed, and will have the effeet of keeping these bars closed. It is understood t! th sidering the advisa sing an ordinance licensing all sorts of business which du not now pay any license. The h an ordinance 1s to secure to the uly has hereto- fore been secured from the saloons. Another move whispered avout is that of urranging a license for drug stores dealing in intoxicating liquors, It is cluimed by those suggesting this scheme, at the only difference between the old and the new will be that the drug stores will handle the liquors, instead of the saloons. In view of the probabihty of many new drug stores starting up, it is claimed that it is no more than fair that if they have the bnsiness, which the saloons have heretofore had, they should pay the hcense which the saloons for- merly paid. Such are some of the schemes being discussed as the outgrowth of the en- forcement of the prohibitory law. one of the e Star sale stables for mules and heavy draft horses. —~ Norman Horses. The issung of Injunctions against the Council Bluils saloons will have its effect on Neola, and it would not be a matter of surprise if within a short time the open saloon would form a part only of the past history of the town. It would prove a blessing to the town pump, whose waters have become stagnant through disuse. Neola's saloons, however, have unjustly been made a target at which the last grand jury dischurged its righteous indignation over the violation of the liquor laws, Evidence of the same character was be- fore the rrmd jury in relation to the sa- loons of hlmdeu, Avoca and Walnut.
