8 THE OMAHA DAILY BEH: SATURDAY. AN ACCIDENTAL SHOOTING. Obarles Hurst Fatally Shot by Louis Couter, a Playmate. AN ELEVEN-YEAR-OLD WIFE, A Heavy Damage Suit—Kuchl's Ashes ~Taylor's Troubles—The Police Alarm—Another Street Rail- way — Other Local. A Shooting Affafr. A shooting affair that will result in the death of a young lad named Charles Hurst occurred on the railroad crossing near Sulphur Springs about noon yester- day. Hurst, who1s a young lad about fourteen years of age, started out on a hunting trip with Lowms Couter, a boy of about the same age. They were cross- ing a culvert on the railroad track just north of Sulphur Springs when Couter, who carried a heavily loaded shot gun fell through through the guard. In t fall he dropped the gun which was d. charged the contents taking effeet in the abdomen of young Hurst, who was fol- lowing close behind his companion. The shot took effect in the right side of young Hurst’s abdomen, making an in- cision about three inches in length. The smaller intestines were exposed and cut in six places. Upon being shot Hurst rolled off of the embankment at the side of the track and was with difliculty réscued by his companion who called for help. The injured boy was removed to his home on Olfo strect near Sherman avenue and Dr. Cornish summoned to attend him. He found his wound to be of a very serious nature and called Dr. Shaw to assist him. The two physicians did all in their power to save the boys life. He continued to sink rap- idly, however, and at a late hour last night all hope of his recovery was given up and it was thought that he would not live until this morning. While the un- fortunate affair is looked upon as an acci- dent rumors are afloat that may chance the aspect of the case and will at least cause an official investigation of the mat- ter. Itappears that on Thursday the two boys had quarreled and parted with threats of a future meeting to settle their difliculty. They did not meet again until icqmrduy when Couter appeared at {urst’s home with a shot gun and in- duced Hurst to go hunting with him. This fact has been taken by the ever ready gossip as a suspicious circumstance and commented upon until an official in- vestigation of the case will probably re- sult. The wounded lad mad a statement to Dr. Cornish yesterday to the effect that he rl"iul’l‘l!(l the affair as purely acci- dental. In the district court yesterday after- noon Lulu Williams filed a petition for a divorce from her husband, Robert Wil- liams. The woman’s petition sets forth a strange state of affairs. She alleges that the license by which she was married to Williams in Missouri, on October 19, 1885, was obtained by fraud. She avers that at that time she was only ecleven years of age, a mere child, and that Wil- liams, although aware of her age, per- jured himself and swore that she was twelve yerrs of age, and thus secured the license. The chila wife goes on to state that ever since the day of her marriage to Williams she has been the victim of his brutal and abusive nature. Of late he has refused to lend any aid to her support and she prays for a decree of di- vorce. Henrietta Grybsky commenced a suit in the district court yesterday for a di- vorce from her husband, Joseph Gryb- 8ky. They were married in Omaha on November 19, 1885. The plaintiff alleges that her husband has abused her almost constantly since the day of their marriage and has repeatedly calied her the vilest names, and finally capped the climax of abuse by refusing to let her remain in her home. She alleges that sheis in deli- cate heslth and not able to earn her own living. She asks a divoree, the custody of her child and alimony. The Year 1887, During the year 1887 the people of this city will see the ‘fronwu growth it has ever had. This is ecknowleged by all good judges. Property in and about the city will advance in price so rapidly that hundreds of fortunes will be made in a few months. The new packing houses, faotories, etc., locating in South Omaha will make that a business part of the city and a» & consequence property 1 that locality will ba much sought after. Now, this week, is the time to buy this prop- erty. We are sole agents for South Omaha proper and an investment made there now will return the purchaser his money and 100 to 200 per cent addded to it. Anybody with a small amount of money can buy a lot 1n South Omaha. The C. E. Mayne Real Estate & Trust Co.,, N. W ith and Harney. Charles K, Taylor, the deputy county clerk, arrested on Thursday on a charge of forging J. H. McCreary’s name to n county warrant, waived preliminary ox- amination before Justice Helsley yester- day and gave bonds in the sum of $500 for his appearance before the district court grand jury. Mr. Corbett,” the gentleman who ad- vanced the money with which the war- rants were purchased, has been abused and slandered in conncction with the aftair. The simple facts are that Taylor came to Corbett and pronosed to him to buy up the warrants which had been un- call for. These warrants belonged principally to country people, and Taylor represented that he could hn{ them up at a discount and get them cashed in Janu- ary. Mr. Corbett agreed to furnish the money, provided County Treasurer Bolln would certify that the scheme was a proper one. “That official declared that the proceeding was a proper one, and actually cashed the warrants as they were presented, when there was suflicient money in the treasury. Taylor repre- sented that he had J)rocurm( the assign- ments properly, and Mr. Coibett, sup- posing that he had done so, of course turnished the money. If it is true, as claimed, that some of the assignments since. His delusion takes a strange form. Everythiag that moves on wheels is to him an engine. He will board a street car or r coal wagon and urge the driver to “'give her more sand,” and in- quire anxiously and with his old time Iness about the “orders’ of every ing vehiclo he scos. He has a wife and Schild in straitened circumstances. He will probably be sent to the asylum. Y., where he had the body cremated. He says the operation took from about 10 o'clock in the morning until 2 in the afternoon. The remains—the ashes—are now at Drexel & Maul's, in a neat clay red urn, hermetically sealed. Mr. Baumer says that Kuehl never de- sired that his ashes should be pl i Wittig’s saloon, and the idea origmated from a serio-facetious remark of a by- stander at the coroner’s inguest, when the announcement was made that the body was to be cremated; the funny man said the ashes ought to be spread on Wittig's grave. Mr. Baumer never for a moment entertained an idea involving such a sacrilege. LOTTA AS LITTLE NELL, Another large audience turned out last night to see Lotta in ‘Little Nell.” The performance was in every respect leagues beyond that of the evening before and Lotta was given a perfect ovation. She and several members of the company were called before the curtain. In no part could Lotta's versatility have been better displayed than in the dual roles of Little Nell and the Marchioness. The latter, particularly, fitted her like a glove and she seemed a veritable sprite of the gutter, Her impersonation throughout was an artistic trinmph that was fully appreciated by the enthus 1e audience.
