Dierks telephoned to police cen- tral station and Rock was lodged in jail by Officers O'Brien and White. The presence of Colonel Sapp in Wash- ington will doubtless cause more glad newe to come from the east in regard to Council Blufls. His acquaimtance and influence there will count for much in gaining for thiscity its desired improve- meats, Those who went to the I’rnfib\lcrlan church yesterday morning were surprised and disappointed to find %w doors closed and a notice posted up stating that there would be no services there. As no an- nouncement had been made 1n the papers, a large number were thus disap- poinlu(i in their plans. The unfortunate illness of Mrs. Wads- worth necessitated a change in the cast of the “Naiad Queen.” Mrs. Roff, al- though having but about two hours in * which to prepare for the part. took the role of the queen wonderfully well, Her pleasing manners, her sweet voice and charming grace ciused much enthusiasm. It was a difficult task for any singer to take such an impor part on such short notice, but particularly difticult to satisfy an audience wWhich been fa- vored night after night by hearing such a songstress as Mrs, Wadsworth, A syndicate, of which Herman Buerdorf is truste ased a tract of land ion and platted the same, calling it Plainview. The pur- chase was made from what is known as the Shenandoah syndicate, they not bein, able to come to an grvumonl on some of their matters. Plainview has been put on the market on terms that others should follow, the case generally being that too much cash is asked and too short a time g\\'un on the payments. One-fifth cash, alance in ‘payments of $10 monthly ‘being within the reach ot all who wish to invest, The Des Moines Register yesterday had 8 missionary here, who wns soatterin about a few extra copies of the paper un§ trying to excite some interest in the scheme for working up a boom for that city. The attempt was not very enthusi- astically received. 1In the first place Council Blufls folks are too busy caring for the boom which has come here to give much time or thought to any pros- (uvc boom in Des Moines. A boom in he hand is worth two 1o the bushes of Another reason for the in- flerence in regard to Des Moines is that Des Moines has becen very selfish and Emspln[z in its policy; hus sueered at ouncil Blufls and its boom, at least so far as the press of that city voice the sen- timent of Des Moines. The Register has been particularly ill-natured and envious, nd while it hus esgerly taken pay for space in which to give a truthful acconnt of the boom here, it devotes other space lrflsl) to sneers about it. his sort of icy does not eause the ens to feel kindly, esvecially when the same sort of holicy has been Tollowed for years past. It isa little too much now to ask Council Blufis to help get up a boom for Des Moines. When Des Moines gets its boom Council Blufls 1 ake some in. terest in it, but it can hardly spend time now in trying to manufacture a boom for another city, when it has all its time oc- cupied with a boom of its own already well started and Lruwmk fast every day For Plai 's abstracts are ay placed real estate, and §10 oW ml-lumn lots see OvgLL Bros & Co., NGER & \\1 KllA\l A. The boom of the squatters who have settled on the other side of the river, most of whom are residents of this city, has caused no little stir here, as stated in the Bek yesterday wmorning. ‘There seems to be a great difference of opinion among local attorneys and others as to what the outcome will b There s little chance to differ as to what the law is, but the difference scems to be as to what the evidence will be. The commissioners are somewhat inter in the startling revelation, as they are inclined to the belief that the land thus claimed is a part of that given to this city by the government for park purposes. They will look the matter up to-day, and amine the plats with a yiew of assert- ing their claims for park purposes if the investigation shows thatthey have rights in the m There will doubtless be i litigation before these set- b the full fortune which now t them. He gave them some straight talk about the needs of every day religion. Among the church news of this parish is the announcement that a new pipe organ has been ordered, and is to be in place ready for the com- ing Easter services. Mr. Mackay, not seeing his way clear to get the organ in any other way, kas personally become responsible for the payment of $2,000. The different boating associations hold their meetings in the early part of March and 1if there are to be any regattas or rs on Lake Manawa this season organization must be effected at once. With the extensive improvements that are contemplated about Lake Manawa the coming scason, such as the building and operating of the motor railway, the new hotel by the Min- neapolis syndicate which recently pur- chased 160 acres adjoining the lake, the setting out of trees and other nccessary improvements about the hotel property, the building of cottages around the lake, the beautifying of ke park, recently purchased by E.
