Mr. Sachen, who has been cared for at the Cottage hospital, has been in a very critical condition and it secemed that he could not recover, but a change has now taken place, and the cri is believed to have been safely passed. He was for- merly a resident of Grand Island. The man Rogers, who was fined for not taking out a book-seller’s license, is still in the city juil. He claims to be in cor- respondence with his attorneys in Des Moines, and following their advice. He threatens to sue the ity for heavy dam- ages, and is satistied to remainin the dungeon as he 1s sanguine about making the city pay well for his.imprisonment. Others see little show for him beyond a chance for him to spend some money n the courts if he feels so inclined. The voters are strangely n g tting registered. To-day is the lust hance for many of them. ~They should be sure and get” their names put on, for if they do not appear before the board in person they cannot vote. Council Bluffs should show its full voting strength, and thus give additional basis to the boom, also, and put to rest the jealous state- ments that Council Blufls has not as many voters as is claimed. Every man to the front. The question of ('rcchng a new city hall is \)unfi' discussed.” That such a building should be put up this season is conceded by all, The only thingon which there scems to be a difference of opinion is as to the exact location. The proposal to condemn property near the grusmt building, and build through to Main street, scems to meet with much favor. The plan for s curing enough ground for a market place in connection with the city hall is also mceting with favor. A move will doubtless’ be made atan early date to go abead with thesc 1mprovements. THE NEW FIRE ALARM, The Malvern Snicide's Actions While in Thia City—Gossip About the New Hotel--A Boy's Narrow Escape—Binffs News, Surveying For the Levee. City Engineer Tostevin is running the preliminary line for the new levee, so as to get at the property to be affected, and thus get at the facts on which to base his report. The present plan is % run along the north line of section 27, so as to in- clude the Porterfield, Folsom, Corcoran and Carr tracts, as they are marked on the map. The levee is to commence at a point where the north lhne intersects with the present levee and run due west until it strikes the high bench of ground near the river, and turning will go southerly and extend to the Union Pacific dump. There are portions of this line on which no work will be necessary. The low Jlaces are to be built up, and along the ine there 1s for much of the distance a natural protection equal to the levee. City Engincer Tostevin is very sanguine that with a comparatively small expendi- ture_the whole of the bottoms n be surcly protected from any possibility of an overflow. There are large portions which stood above the high water in 1881 even, when the water was higher than it probably will ever reach again. The work will be commenced at once and will be done long before the June rise. There will be ample security .m1|ml un) possible danger from overtlow. move insures r'nnlllll'nm-_u| bottom ].lulh even among the most timid. The ex- pense for what work isneeded is nominal. The Brk yesterday morning contained the particulars of a suicide at Malvern. The name of the man was thought to be Trion, and it was thought that his family lived at Peoria, On reading the ae- count in the BEE yesterday Mr. John Miller, the baker on Tenth avenue, in this city, was vividly reminded of the fact that this man was at his place 1n this city on the day before he committed sui- The man was a stranger, strangely, so strangely that it was and in view of later develop- Miller is now satistied that the man was crazy. The man’s head seemed to be troubling lim, and Mr. Miller had him bathe it in cold water. The man talked about his home, and said the house was burned, and his little boy was burned in it. He $eemed to be suspicious of his wife, and then he would pra her as (hu\u:h he had not the siightes doubt concerning her. He said he had been robbed of a ticket by a railway con- ductor, and that a man on the train once tried to kill him. He pulled out his pocket knife and sbowed how the man came for nim with a knife. After some more talk of this rather wiid character, the man started to take the train. He evidently went from here to Malvern, here he took his own life. You can depend upon it,” was the reply. Some one expressing a doubt, Mr. Shea braced up his prediction by—*I'll just bet an even thousand dollars that work will commence on a large, new hotel here by the 1st of June. I mean it. You find a man who wants to bul on it and I'll be there with the money.’ There seems to be Ht‘vnrnl matters to be first settled before the new hotel project is assured. Inquiry of different one: - terested leads to the discovery that it is very desirable to get the correr lot,” which belongs to W. F. Sapp, jr. He wants $14,000 for it, there being twenty-five feet front. Some are in favor of buying this, although they deem it too high a price. Others do not want to give over $10,000 for it, and this amount in_cash is said to have been of- fered Mr. Sapp, but declined. Another matter to be adjusted is the lease of Ferguson & Son, the present pro- I»rumr« of the Pacific houss. They are holding the fort, are running the hotel, and propose dumg $0 until they notlfy the public themselves that they are to make a change, They seem annoyed at the reports started, for naturaily the trayeling public gets the idea that the hotelis about to be torn down and a new one built, which does not help their trade just now. The patrons of this hotel need not worry. There will be abundant notice given before there is any change in the situatior A Narrow Escape, The sewer near the corner of Broadway and Frank street beecame clogged with ice and during the thaw of Thursday the water at that point flooded a portion of the street, causing at one point quite a pond, Y ay that was frozen over, making q a tempting skating rink As Marshal Guanella was coming along near there he saw a little Ilu\\ skdlllll’ but the ice suddenly v wd the boy went into the water, »hu-lu as about up to his neck minute more and he would probably have been so chilled through as to have sunk right down, but the marshal rushed in and grabbed him, pulled him out, and told him to warni bimselt by running for howe, The New Fire Alarm. In response to queries the answer invar- iably comes that everything will be all right in a few days. The system will be publicly testea. It is bound to work all right. With this assurance there seems to be nothing to do but for the public to wait. Those who wanted another system in place of the Richmond delight in in- timating that the system will not work and say, "1 told you so.’’ Those who inu orted ihe claims of the Riehmopd 0 be uneasy; and wonder what the reason is that the ny-lcm is not ready. There is an air of mystery about the matter which is unpleasant, but the assur- ance is given that all is well, that faith and patience are needed. ‘These have been exercised for some weeks, naturally they are getting worn. and - Substantial abstracts 0( titles and real estate loans. B u— A Last Peep at Fairy Land, Last night the opera house was crowded as on the opening of the fairy opera, “Naiad Queen.” The audience was just as wild with enthusiasm, and the applause was as deafening, as on the first night. It is wonderful how this opera thus draws night after night, and with no apparent wearying on the part of the public. The partici £ show some fatigue, but the enteriainment as a whole moves off more smoothly than on the start, and is now at its best. This afternoon the matinee, and to-night the closing performance. If there in the city who has not seen th ing vision of fairy land, this last oppor- tunity should mot be missed. It is entitfed to all the words of high praise given it, ana the like will not probably be scen'in this city for a long time to come. - - For Sale.
