It Brings One Hundred Dollars an Acre In- stead of Thirty, THE NEW TERM OF COURT. The Move For Varions Improvements in the City—~The Levee to Be Built at Once—Headquarters For the Salvation Army. The Levee to be Buile at Once. The building of a levee as a protection against any possible trouble from high water meets with general approval. A survey of the ground shows that the work ecan be done at little expense compara- tively. J.J. Brown says that forty teams working ten days can accomphsh all that is immediately necessary. It is proposed to at once commence where the present levee leaves off, and fill in the low ground between that and the high bench near the waterworks, that bench of land being already high above all possible danger from overtlow. An inspection of the old levee shows it to be in excellent condi- tion, far better than was ecxpected by those who have not seen it for years. The making of the levee along the low streteh of ground is deemed all that is necessary for the present, and then other levees or extensions can be. made as seems best, The bottom lands have been formed into a sewer district, and the cost of the levee \\v]] be taxed to this. It it will not cost to \lnl and Mr. Evans of- e tax if nceessary in order to h the work done at once. The large property owners in that part of the city are agreed as to what is needed, and how the levee should be built. There are numerous rather thrifty cities, sucl Chicago and Cincinnati, portio ’ overtlows, and yet they prosper. Those who arc any way timid about water egrams every sp hunt up rords, and see what cities thus suffer, and how despite this_they grow marvelousty, In Council Blufts there has been but one serious overflow bottom land, and that did no dam- re those who are con- rping about it. To_satisfy all s us ones the levee will be huilt, and then there can be no possible danger even under extraordinary eircumstances. The work will be done 1n ample time, before the spring r — - To Contractors and Builders.® Proposals will be received by the under- signed until the 23a of next month for the building of th nolic church, Plans and spee ions y be seen at the pastoral residence. FEBRUARY 16, 1887 Sale of a Poor Farm, There has been so much talk about the manner in which the county board made a bargain for the sale of the poor farm to John Bennett and I. A. Miller tor #30 an acre, that there was some curiosity felt as to what would be the resuit of the adver- tising for bids. The county board met terday and the bids were opened. There were three only. One was from Harry Birkinbine, of the water works, and Harry Allen, a New York capitalist. Their bid was $100 an acre, one-half cash, the balance on time. This was for the whole 200 acres, making the net sum $20,000. A bid was received from Leon- ard Everett, offering for one eighty-ncre tract $60 an acre, and for the balance— 120 acres—$40 an acre. This would amount to $,600 for the whole faurm. The third bid 'was from Horace Everett, ho oftered $30 an acre, or $10,000, all fash, The bid of Harry Birkinbine was ac- cepted, he to pay the £10,000, the half down, before 2 o'clock this afternoon. In case of his failure to do so, then the Everett bid will be accepted Mr. Birkin- bine desired this time in which to com- municate with Mr. Allen, of New York, who is interested with hime in the purt chase, The appr: Clark, A.
