E s and Spencer Smith, T'he proposed line is from the dummy depot on Broadway, down Eighth street, and then off in the direction of the lake. It scems evident that there will ba groat improvements made in this summer re- sort, which proved so popular last sum- mer. There will be much fine residence property also opened up in that part of the city, Sale of the Poor Far The peculiar manner in which the negotiations were entered into for the sale of the county poor farm for $30 an acre has already been given pretty fully in the Bee. The threats to enjoin the sule, and the general dissatisfaction ex- pressed, caused the deal to be declared off. Proceedings have since been started under the original mode of procedure, The county has advertised for sealed bids to be received up till noon to-day. Yes- the farm was appraised by D. P, , Henry Paschel and A. C. Graham, The appraisal will not be made known until after the bids are opened. There seems to be some confusion caused by the pecnhiar method of advertising for bids, The board originally ordered that bids be received for parcels of the farm, as well as for the farm as a whole, but the ad- yertisements simply read ' for the poor farm. As there are five forties there are some who would like to bid on only one of the forties, but if bids for the whole are required it would bar out all but the heavier capitalists. The board should sve to it that there is a free field and & fair show, that the county may realize sll there is 10 be had from the sale. — The Police Busy, The boom struck police beadquarters Sunday. There were more arrests than for any twenty-four hours in months. Most of them were small lots, there being no heavy deals. The whisky dealt out Sunday scemed to be of the fighting qual- ity, and black eyes and scratched faces were conspicuous in - court. Among those who took options at $6.50 each were Bill Walters, I'. Johnson, John H, (’Neal, Nim Long, Jimmie Smith, G. E. MeRae ana Charles Haley. Henry Allison, who been held on suspicion of having been concerned in the disappearance of Mrs. Phelps’ diamonds from the Ogden house, was set free ye day, on condition of his leaving the city within an hour. His partner, Charles McCloud was also given u tickot of leave, and gave a parting warning to the reporters not to let the public know that he had been driven out of the city as & vagrant, The reporters therefore sup- pross his name. S, Enstern Boom Talk. “You'd be surprised,” yesterday re- marked S. P. Maceonnell, resident part- ner of the Chicago Lumber company, who has just returned from an extended business trip, “to hear the people in Min- nesota, Wisconsin, eastern lowa and Chi- eago tulk of this city. They all scem to keep informed as to the boom here. Why, these people are as well aware of the boom we have here as the residents of this city are themselves. On all sides whenever even a stranger learned 1 was from Council Blufls he began asking me questions in regard to the boom. One thing peculisr, many of them secemed well posted as to the prices of real estate and L met many who told me they were coming here to investigate matters.” ly to a question of the BEE man he replied: “1 anticipate fully three times as much lumber will be sold in this city this coming scason as has been sold here in the past thr years. I have made preparations for it and so have the other lumber dealers. Several large lumber firms from a distance are hunt- ing locations here. One of these from Des Moines, have representatives here now.”” Selling Intoxicants, Charles Maxfield, who has been keeping a saloon beyond the institution for the deaf and dumb, was before Justice Biggs yesterday on the charge of selling in- toxicating liquors to Edward Lewis, It appears that the Lewis boy, with others, has been 1n the habit of getting drunk at this place, and the parents are deter- mined to break the business up., On the other hand it is elaimed that young Lewis and a comrade eame to Maxfield's drunk, and bought two cans of oysters. They left an overcoat to secure the payment of 50 cents, and forgot where they had left the overcoat until word was sent to them. They then refused 10 pay the 50 ceats, and had Maxtield arrested for stealing the coat. On trial before Justice Schurz he was aequitted, Then this case was brought, and he claims it 18 purely m licious. A jury has been empanelled, and the ease will be completed to-day.
