It isn’t the sort of a boom to be cllected by wind or weather. Miss M. T. Schoit has taken the agency for the Domestic machines, and 0. Cause, a defective flue. There are only nine prisoners in the county jail now. The number will be kept lower than i the years past, not because people are growing so much bet- ter, but because the court meets more frequently, the cases being disposed of more speedily. 1t is understood that assoon as Deputy United States Marshal Edward Troutman can clear up the business now in his hands he will resign the oftice, so as to give s whole time mm mumum to the real estate busin There will be numerous xl])]lhg.lunux tor his position, . Mr. Leaman is old- unwr in this business and has a large circle of business acquaintances in th\s city and throughout lowa, having been a member of the firm of hnydvr & Lea- man until their dissolution on Wednes- day last. W. H. Bates, alias Jefferson, and Ed Wilson, two colored youths, were taking in the town and calling at various places of loud reputation. Their actions aroused the suspicions of the police, who made them step behind the bars and wait for daylight. They showed up to be two minstrels who were trying to organize a show here, or sccure a lfu\ll, and they were turned loose again, It is rumored that Allison, the young man_ arrested for stealing jewelry be- longmg to Mrs. Phillips, of “the Ogden house, is sad to have been concerned in a hike affair at Sioux City lately. It is suspected that he took the jewely from here and planted it in Omaha by~ aid-of an accomplice, ‘The oflicers are hunting sharp for eyidence, and are confident that they will get closer track of the missing property. Thomas Kirk and D. 8. Vanover, two young men, are in the city jail on sus- icion of having stolen two horses which hey were hurriedly taking across the river when they were overhauled. An Informal Hoard of Publio Im- provements—The Council Holds a Caucus—Michael Stro- goff To-Naght, Getting to Business The extreme excitement caused by the suddenness with which the boom struck this city, has begun to subside enough for buyers and sellers to look at matters in a more rational light. The real estate transactions 4 ting onto a business is, and thero is less of options and less betting, but more bona-fide pur- chases and genuine investments. Still there is a very feverish state of feeling, and the enthusiasm has ripened into confidence that the boom wiilkeep up for along time. Those who a few days ago felt that it was liable to get away, and that they must therefore muke quick turns or none at all, now settie down to the unshaken believe that there will be from (his time on'a steady nerease in prices. It1s now conceded by the most timid ones that there are enough im- provements assured, work on which will commence so soon as the weather per- mits, to keep the boom well fed. The fact that there is hardly a house for rent and that many new comers are flocking in, is an evidence that there is need of more buildings, and capital will hasten to sup ply this need. Those interest ed in the building of a new hotel should, at as eariy a date a8 practicable, perfeet their plans, so that the public may be bled to know what sort of a structure it is to be. pictu > showing what the new hotel will be, will be w tched for with eagerness. 1 means. ey Wagner and 7, block 31, B William Moor William Butle on Broudwa ernment buil A, Lave Armour, ye arid thten Jota s B The following tran record yesterday Hurry it as purchased lots 6 s sub for $1,250. yesterday purchased of of ( nda, Ia., tifty feet just west of the new gov- the purchased Idition. postmaster at house filed for ns Alltl wifc to W. The city council seems disposed to act in accordance with the evident desire of the citizens to push needed improve- ments to a speedy completion. The preliminary work for the levee 18 still another. tisevident that the coun- cil preposes to keep apace of the boom, and thie public improvements are not ¥ be allowed to lag. The council has taken another action which is of consid- erable importance. It has selected three well-known and responsible citizens, heavy taxpayers, to serve as an advisory t‘nmhnllvclul‘\t‘l cojointly with the three aldermen who hold over th ear. The aldermen are Danforth, Hammer and Keller. The_three citizens are T. J. Evans, N. P. Dodge and George F. Wright. The importance of prompt ac- tion, the extent of improvements contem- plated, the interests of the city thus in- volved, and the absence of uch or- fl'lm/‘\lmn as a board of public works, has led to this action. The citizens named, together with the aldermen who hold over another year, are to form, in faet, a sort of board of public improve ments. It 1s really only an advisory body, but the councrl will be glad to haye some such body to offer sugges- tions and share the résponsibility before the public. .
