The Finances of the Deaf Mute In- stitution Being Oonsidered. From the Des Moines Register islearned the following concerning the finances of the institution for the deaf and dumb here: A Mr. G. L. Wyckofl, superintendent and secretary of the institution for the deaf and dumb at Council Bluffs, together with the trustees, Lewis Weinstein, Ilurllnfimn, A. T. Flickinger, Council Bluffs, and C. S. Ranck, lowa City, were in the yesterday in consuliation ‘with the governor and aud- 1tor of state. When the quarterly bill of jthe superintendent for support fund came to hand Auditor Lyon noticed that the bill was for the quarter in advance, contrary to the custom of all other state institutions, The auditor therefore refused to issue the war- rant until the matter was explained. The superintendent came to Des Moines to con- suit about the matter, and stated that the warrants had been issued heretofore without being questioned. ‘The superintendent, beifig a new man, was simply following in the footsteps of his predecessors, but conld find no law authorizing the state to pay in advance, The meeting was held yesterday to agree npon what to do, as the institution cannot run without pay. It was yesterday discovered also that since 1873 the per diem and mileage of the trustees had been pald out of the support fund. As this would amount in total to about £1,000, it is proposed to have a warrant drawn for t mount on the gene fund, from which these expens should have been paid, and thus put the tinances in good .~lm]«n An opinion of the attorney gencral is to be gotten, and the ac- counts to lited by the exectitive couneil.
