A VICTORY BCR THE STATE, Dakota Cotinty Orde 27, ed to Pay Inte 0 Worth of A SUBJECT FOR LEGISLATION. The Slowness of the Parties Doing the State Printing Canses a Great Deal of Genmbling— Line coln News, IPRON THE BER'S LINC ate won a viet N EREAL] y in the contest with the treasurer of Dakota county over the question of paying the interest on the bonds held by the state and issned by that county. Thizis the case mentioned gome time since in the By the tir that the attorney general commen suit in mar before the court to compel Dakota county to the interest coupons, and among th cent decisions down granting the mandamus and their payment. The state of these bonds as an investment of tion of the permanent school fund, the investment board of public lands and buildings several years @0, and if the mandamus would have | failed to rest then the would have stood a chance of being just that much out of pocket. It will bo remembered from former rehearsals of these bonds that they were arefunding bond more in amount than purchased by the state, and when they were issued and sent to. the auditor for registration they were re fused registration. A mundamus was brought in the supreme court at that time by the county to compel their registra- tion the court held that they proper in form nd that y _should _ be recorded. The board of lands and buil under this seal of yalidity placed upon them by the state, purch, 3 block of them rt of the ing to purchase the whole i time, but & compromise w in the above amount. ‘I'he action of Da kota county in now trying to practieally repudiate them eaused this latter decision on the payment of accrued intercst. The question of investment of the permanent school fund is one that needs immediate attention at the hands of the legislature in that their investment is Limited to United States bonds or state and county bonds of Nebraska, In these later years the counties in the state are not in the bond business except at rare intervals, all bonds now voted being almost ex- clusively precinet bonds, in which state funds under the constitution cannot be invested. A glance at the report of the state treasurer shows that there are now on hand open for investment and without a pla for inyestment son 00,000, and this amount will be increased by the present returns of the county treasire to nearly $500,000. What provisions e be made for an mvestment of thes funds is open for discussion THEY WANT THE REPORTS Members of the legislature, as well as the state oflicers themselves, are getting anxious to see the different reports of the state officers that went to the vrinters some time in_December and that ought ) in print by the opening diys ature. Thus far only the re- attorney gencral has heen re- d distributed, and legislative S, o lly those on ways and means, need the reports to become ue- quainted with the recommendations and upon which to formulate appropriation bills. The state oflicers expected ull these reports in printed form long ere this, and a little haste would be appreciated. TRAVELING MEN'S BANQUET. MeVegh files her peti- tion and asks a divorce from her hus- band, William A. McVegh, on the grounds that her husband is an habitual drunkard. The petitioner recites that as long as 1870 thoy were married; that almost immedi- ately thereafter he became addicted to drink. pursuing his downward way until he beeame au habitual drunkard, and that the plaintift for the ) SIX months has had to supply the enti upport for the family. The plaintiff further avers that since the marriage he has not lived with her or recognized her as his lawful wife, and he therefore prays tor diyorce, as provided by the statutes. The district court clerk has received from a like official in Otoe county the in- dietment and transenipt of proceedings in the e against Mrs. Armanda Shel- lenberger, whose case was ordered to Lancaster county for trial on u change of venue granted by Judgo Hayward.
