His Carcer as a Soldier—Duty His First Impulse Always. Couxein BLorws, Dec. 2.—To the Ed- itor of the Bre: In your issne of this morning I sce a short notice of the death of Jacob Weidensoll, of your city, at Los Angeles, on the 20th inst. I see, too, that all montion of his having been a soldier in the late civil war is omitted. Permit me to state o few facts in rogard to the carcer of one of the most honorable and deserving eitizens Oniuha ever h; Mr. Weidensoll was n native of Blair county, Pa., and there I became personally a quaintea with him, in his early manhood, and in my own, and before the war, In the early fall of 1861, GGeneral Jamison re- ceived authority from the war department to reoruit four new regiments, to rendez- vous at Huntington, Pa., and to be com- manded by him, and koown as the “Mountain Brigade.” Enlistments went on slowly, and'in Febru 1862, only two regiments, the Eighty-fourth Penn- sylvanla and the Hundred and Tenth Pennsylvania, were completed. *‘Stone- kson was in full possession thon p douh Vallnrt, and Shields, through General N. P. Banks, di- rected to clear the valley from Winches- ter up of the_cnemy. Colonel William G. Murray, the last democratic postmas- ter of Hollidaysburg, Pa., was the col- onel of the REighty-fourth Pennsyl- vania, and had served allantly under General Scott, in Mexico. Jacob Weidensoll, a young man nct quit twenty-one, had enlisted in the Eighty- fourth Pennsylvania, These two regi- ments were ordered at once from Hunt- ington to Winchester, where under Shields, on the 23d 'of March, 1862, “‘Stone \! son was defeated, for the flrst and only time. Mr. Weidensoli served with his regiment every day, from that until the close of the war. His regi- ment and the One hundred and tenth Pennsylvania were twins in the service, and 1ngepurable, forming as fine and valiant 2 body of men as the old "Phurd corps, under General Daniel E. Sickles ever had, The gallant Colonel Murr Wi hot dead in the final charge at Win- chester, on the 23d of March. No man in the Army of the Potomae had finer record for fidelity to duty than Mr, W nsoll. When his three years were expired he reinstated as a veteran, and served until the last armed enemy submitted. He came to Omaha in the Union Pacific was then building, and as a mechamo he ob- tained employment in the wood shops of the comvany. Ho rose steadily in re- sponsibility and trusts, antil he w the head ot one of the shaps, a position he was compelled to relinquish ubout three years ago on account of ill About ten years ago he was ele republican representati in the le ture of Nebraska from Dougl county, nnd served one session with great eredit to himself, Shortly after- d, he married a Miss Potton, of this city, whom be leaves as a widow, with two interesting childron to mourn his death. Mr. Weidensoll, in every dv that fell to his lot, was a high-minded, honorable, trustful citizen, tender of con- jence and spaving and exact in word ises. As a surviving soldier of fourth Pennsylvania, he al- ways retained the esteew and confidence of the officers and men who were spared with bim, after the more than forty des- perate battles in wiich lhcf' and he par- ticiputed. 1, KearLey, Brevitios, ®David Bennison, of Bennison Bros., is in Chicago ou business this week.
