The only appar- ent defense was that the woman was not 50 chaste as she cluimed, and witnesses were introduced to attempt to break down her character. One of the attor- neys for the defendant Askwith, tried to ot even the reporters excluded from hearing the case. In this he did not suc- cced, however, and the reporters kept their seats until they had learned enough of the matter, when they left of their own accord, After hearing Askwith at- tempt to examine witnesses it secmed no wonder that he did not want to have newspuaper men, or in fact others, listen 10 his methods nducting a case, ' r throughout is a dirty one, and the result will only be watehed with interest by those who are connected with the ease, or who are sequainted with the parties concerned, they being all from Walnut.
