Damages are claimed to the amount of §18,000, mainly on the ground of libellous publication af: fecting the credit of the firm. It is claimed by the plaintiffs, who are a large and well known wholesale drug firm, that the bank has been injuring its eredit vy returning drafts on the firm sent the bank for collection. Oue of these in- stances was in January .ast, when the defendants received a draft from the Ot- tawa gluss company, drawn on Harle, Haas & Co., and sent to the bank for col- cetion, the amount belng $333.64. On Ithe next day the draft was presented to the firm and the bank informed that the indebtedness had beon already paid. The bunk returncd the draft with some nota- tions ealeulated to injure the ercdit of the firm. The tirm eclaims §1,000 damuges on this count Another elaim is that in May last Reed & McCormick, of New York Uity, drew on the firm for §63, aud that the bani did not present the draft for payment, but 4 returned it with the note on ke baek, THE ‘‘no attention ™ £2,000 In company, SUNDAY On this the firm claims June the Maltine of Now York, for %), and the bank r with the note, “N, . this the firm ¢laims § Manufacturing drew on the firm turned this draft won't pay On 000 damages Another draft, from John L. 'The bank folksclaim that the firm was evidently lu.uml to hurt the business of the bank, and had declared it would 't to it for collection; this was done of the some ived a draft for collection and presented it to the tirm, the firm would note the amount ete., and hasten to send a araft in pay- ndebtedness to the house ment of the direct, and have the bank return it, kn\m;z(lu- bill had already been paid The firm would do this business through some other bank. The firm was so eranky about these matters that instead of pre- senting a draft in person, the bank got to sending notices by mail, 4 is the eustom in many cities, and when they paid no attention to such notices, then the drafts would be returned unpaid. The firm, on the other hand, denies that it received such notices by mail. Another claim is that there is a little feeting about Mr. Hannan as ashier, and that the ill feeling started originaliy m an attempt to get him out of that position.
