Lightning a Slow Coach Compared With the Rtapidity of the Oper- ation of the aman Boain, Philadelphia Rocord: A prominent Philade!phia physician, who as a special- 15t indiscases of the brain has a wide rep utation, is engaged in writing a little book about dreams and dreamers. In a discursivo mood the dootor talks about the psychological phenomenon commonly spoken of as dreams In A most entertaming wi Gen erally,” said he the other evening, “we think of nothing so swift as tho elec tric current, and yet a fash of lightning is a slow conch compared with the rapid- ity with which upon oceasions the human brain operates, Nothing shows this inso striking a mannor as the wonderful per formances of the mind in dreams. The events of years, to the most minute de- tail, are recalled in o second, and purely imaginary events, covering years and decades are pictured so as to be retained permanently upon the mind, and are conjured up in the hundredth part of a minute. Some years ago a fricad of mine related to me the particu- lars of a striking proof of this fact. He had been nursing another friend whose illness was such t he required con- stant watching. My friend had been at his bed side for nearly ten hours. A lit- tlo French elock stood in_an adjoining room which struck the half houts, and thus gave notice of the time to adminis- ter the patient’s medicine. At 2 o'clock a dose of morphia had to be "v\l-ullu' sick man, and the nurse was waiting for thelittle clock to strike. He was very leepy, and could with ditliculty keep his s open. Presently the first tinkling stroke of the hour sounded. At that mo ment my friend fell asleep s chair. Mo dreamed a most wonderful dream, the details of which it wounlt be tedious to relate just now. The events in the dream were spread over thr , during which s yo time he had been to Paris, to London, to Noew Orleans, a made innuwmerable brief trips by land, lake and river. His vision began with a wedding and con- cluded with an exceation, when the dreamer saw his own wife hanged. The mostminute details of life and travel and adventure were distinetly portrayed, and my friend cstimated that a novel of two big volumes could be written in- merely outlining the events of the vision. When ho awoke with a startat the climax of the excention he heard the French clock strike one. Supposing that he had been asleep soveral hour RbibitalcatRlETin His patient, however, was sleeping quietly, and when he went into the other room to look at the clock he was aston- ished and incredulons to find t the stroke of the clock he had heard upon awnking was but the second stroke for 2 o’clock, ond t this wondertal dream had ocenrred between the two strokes of the hour. *But this iz not at all oceurrence. Atis related of nn English clergyman who fell asleep in his pulpit during the singing of & psalm before the sermon, that he dreamed the events of lifo before he awoke, to tind that his slumber had lasted only during the sing- ing of a single line."” YCan the brain act cohierently during sleep?’’ nsked one of the doctor's curious little andienee. “Oh, ves; that 15 well established, and nas but recently, in a mlkm;_r incident, been further verified. Canon Knox Lit- tle, of Manchester, dreamed that he wrote a hymn; remembering it u pon waking, he'wrote it down on the fly leaf of a handy book. Mo then fell asleep again. Wihen he awoke the seccond timo he had forgotten the words of the hymn, and NII||I)!)AI'I1 that all of the incident had been adream, but when he looked at tho fly leaf in the book he found ti sure cnough, the verses he had written down, and which incorporated in severnd hymn books in England, 1t matter of history, as we all know, that the poet Coleridizé _com posed his celebrated fragment Kubla Khan' whi leep. He fell intoa doze whilo reading Pincha's Pilgrim, and was in slumber for sc al hours. When he awakened he remembered an entire poein which ho had composed during his sleep. Ho at once seized a pen and wrote down the part of it tl had been pr served, but was called away when he was but half through, and was never able afterward to vemember the balinee, so that the poem has remanined asa frag- ment. Tartina, the musician, composed the “‘Devil’s Sonata’ under the inspir tion of u dream, and mathematicians hay solved the problems in their slec they were unable to master while But,” continued the doctor, after = slight pause, “strange as these vnac AT phenomens may seom ¢ yota more curious fact in rel dreammg w noticed. If a dre baseless fabrie, to what unsubs! and elusive thing shall we compare the m of o dream? The thing happens often, but is =0 frequently mingled with the fantastic medley of the dream itself us to be seldom clenrly defined. A very good friend of mine who hves in West Philadelphin some months ago related to me the following dream of this Kind which many years ago disturbed his slumbers, ~and which being & dream ' within & dream, made a great impression upon him and fixed itself innelibly upon his memory ‘1 was sleeping,’ said he, ‘and fell inw's dream, in which I im ed that I was in nsick room talking to the visiting shysician about th ient’s condition, l thonght that 1 w and sleepy and the doctor kindly udvisd me to take & nap, offering to remain at the patient’s bed- side while 1 obtained some rest. 1 dreamed that I ehrew myself upon a sofa and slept, and as1 slept 1 thonght that [ dreamed of a terrible thunder-storm, and it Lwas nwakened by a flash of ligit ning. Opening my cyes 1 saw the doctor by wmy friend’s bed, and spoke to hum of my dream, O n unprocedented ion to ich has never been sufli- m be but a itinl id he, “that is easily explained. Your face was toward that window there, and th 1 blew open one of the sluts you =oe there e sun was thrown di rectly in ‘your face and thus ewused yo to dream of the lightning.” Still, in ‘my dream, I talked some time with th tor, and then awoke. The doctor, pstient, the sick-room und had bue dream, duging the progress of which | had actually dreamed of the lightni stroke, awoke from that dream and con tinued for some tiue to carry ou the thread of the first vision, Dight multi ply sueh experiences, said the doctor, s he prepared to bid his friend Fw' might, “but none of them would so ef¢ lustrate that strangest of alt str tings in the phenomena of @ aiceping brain Iream within a dréum.” The pain and misery suffered by those who arc aflicted with dyspepsia sire in deseribable. The distress of the body is equalled or surpassed by (he confusion { tortures of the wind, thus making its vietims sufter double aflliction, The reliof that is given by Hood's Sursa rilla has eaused thousands to be thankful for this great medicine, It dispels the canses of dyapopsia and tones up the di- gestive organk, Try Hood's Sursa rilla, 7 DIRECTORY PROFESSIONAL CARDS. _ATTORNEYS, BEVINS & CHURCHILI, N-W.
