Bell, was soon to be re- moved, and they were yesterday followed by the BEE correspondent’s naming the man likely to be Mr. Bell's successor. A BEE representative sought several gentle- men who are quite well acquainted with Mr. Bell to ascertain their opinions in regard to the chances of the super architect's brother, C. E. Bell, retaining his position in this ity as clerk to the su- perintendent of the government building. One gentleman smd: “I see by the Bee of last 1 Mr.” Bell m naged the office with reasonable sue- also, that re had been ‘some com plmm of favoritism in |mma contracts for building stone.’ Well, if you remem- ber there was no direct charge of fraud at the time the contract was let for the government building in this city, but it was intimated thatsomething was wrong, There was quite a fight as to who should et the con An Omaha party tried T.ml to get it, and from what [ learn was entitled to it so far as being the lowest bidder was coneer ned, but unfortunately there was a ‘miss’ which, as the suying oo, *is as good as a mile,’ This Omaha irm sent their sealed bid to Washington and by some means or ofher, whether by fair or foul, the letter was laid on the table of an official in the in- terior department, who was at that time absent from the city, This oflicial re- turned to his desk just forty-eight hours after the contract for the stone had been let, and hastily sent it to the treasury de- partment, where they discovered that the bid was 000 below that of the con- tractor who was awarded the contract. Had this letter been mailed in Council Blufls there would have been a feurful howl, but as it was the man forget to mail it while here, and accidentally, and fortunately for Phil Armour, who' was then postmaster, 1t was maled from Omaha, There is no doubt but some favoritism is shown in most all of the goverument contract lettings, If it were not so occasionally some new con- tractor would get ‘a job, but as it is the old contractors are on the inside, and some way get pointers and lifters. Another man well acquainted with Supervising Architect - Bell - yestorday said: T am very sorry, as all fhe plans for new buildings, where the contracts heve not yet been let, will now remain at a standstill. This new man will of course have his own ideas and will in many, if not in all, eases. have new plans drawn up and the old ones destroyed. “‘Mr. Bell has had the assurauce from the president on several occasions that he need not anticipate any doubts as to his tonure of oflibe; that he should. and would be allowed o’ reman unmolested, and in consequence of this Assurance Mr. Bell rejected an offer of $5,000 ver vnr for four years to take charge of the Sook county asy Another one s: Mr. Bell has been exspecin, ecently, because Iam mlllmnlan\ *3 told he has made preparations to goin business in Chicago and will not return to his old Towa home." ) Some people who watch the political The 13 in tast Thurs vising archi t that THE ()‘\h\HA DAILY BEE: MONDAY, OUruBLnN 1, chutiges and make {t n stady claim that C, E.
