A Horse With a Record, Some time ago the owner of a two- year-old mare turned the animal loose upon the bottoms, in the vain hope thit she would wander off and get killed by the cars, or that some other circumstance might arise which would make it possi- ble for him to realize some money for her carcass. She was afllicted with spinal di at she had got her back up about, and was in a deplorable condi- tion every way. Finally some deputy marshal managed to get the animal into the pound, and the owner valued her so lightly that on hearing of her wherea- bouts he sefused to pay even the $1 50 necessary to secure her release. The mar- shal had to sell her at auction to get his costs out ot her. He tried 1t last Satur- day, but the highest bid he could get was fifty cents, so he put her back in the poand, bought some more hay, and post- poned the sale until yesterday. By drum- ming up a erowd he thought to be able to get a bid. but the lookers on gazed at the two-year-old blankly and_refused to chance a cent until Officer Hendricks came along and startled the marshal by offering iive dollars for her, Hendricks said he had a plan for getting that much out of her. He was going to_ kill her and sell the hide, and save the carcass to feed his dog during the winter. Charlie Price, of the St. Paul, came along and v 1 the bid to a n]u.nrl He thought that by get- ting Colonel Fox to ride ner under the suddle for a few times he could reduce the hump on her back.
