Corn, Oats and Provisions Chang- ing Over—The Cattle Market Grows Steadier, But Prices Not Quotably Higher. CHICAGO GRAIN MARKET. CurcAGo, April 20,—[Special Telegram. |— WaeAT—Market cables were steady to-day, and New York was strong early on reported new export business, 1The market here opened higher and buoyant on yesterday af- ternoon’s engagements of wheat, lighter re- ceipts at primary western points and signs of an outside revival of confidence. The Ma deal is tapering off with no little abruptne considerable business in that near-by option passes to-day, and further liquidation was witnessed. But trade was nothing compared to what it has been for the past ten days. As a matter of fact, trading in other futures was not ex- cessively heavy. May sold up to 18%e and June to%0’%e, an advance of }ge from yester- day, and after holding steady at very nearly the best prices of the day for quite a while. the market eased off under free offers and declined to a point below the range ruling at the close of business yesterday. St. Louis poured in an unceasing stream of dispatehes relating to the glorious erop prospects of the southwest, but the underlying secret of the weakness was an all-pervading fear that labor agitation would grow to such propor- tione after May 1as to paralyze the business interests of the country. This uncertainty unquestionably tends to demoralization in lines of business likely to be first affected by interrupted transportation. ConN—"Changing over” continues to be the principal feature of the n deal, though to-day witnessed some covering of shorts. ‘Values were somewhat firmer, and slightly higher quotations resulted. Trade was fairly active, OATs—Oats were slowand easier. ProvisioNs—Provisions were nervous, but prices underwent only minute fiuctuations, Trade was light, and confined to *‘changing over.” Operators are awaiting developments. Unusually heavy deliveries of pork and lard are anticipated, and it is the general belief that after this week the hog product in this city will be more concentrated than itis now.
