The examination of Mrs. Huver, salias Frank, on the charge of enticing Lulu Mercer into a house of prostitution in Omaha, was continued here yesterday. The doors were still kept closed by the request of the defendant, who evidently aislikes to get the affair paraded before the public any more than can be helped The testimony yesterday was on the part of the defense, the attempt being made to break down the reputation of the girl. The first witness was Joseph Lewis, who drove the hack in which Mrs. Huber went to the Mereer house. He had no conversation with them, but he under- stood from what he heard that the girl was going to a spor honse 1 Omiaha, Sophia Slasher, who is & cook in the employ of Mrs. Huber, was the next wit- ness. She said that the doors of the house were open, and Lulu could have ot away any time if she wanted to. She claimed that the girl did not act like an innocent, but ]AI:\TIIM, the other girls in the house. Bert Beardsley, an employe of Met calfe’s saloon, swore that he saw Luln Mer in one of the stalls of the saloon prior to the time she went to Omaha. He did not know of her drinki th men, but ne knew of her k after 9 o'clock ut night. » also swore that Metealfe's saloon was a vespectable place 80 far as he knew. Mrs. Rebocea Lewis, who keeps a see ond-hund store in Owiaha, testified that she had seen Lulu Mer there in com ny with sporting women on several oe- casions. Policeman O'Brien testitied that he had seen her coming from balls late at night, and once coming frow a dunce given by Pardue. He l]ld not consider her reputa- tion very good Mrs {lum‘r herself testified that she came ovor to the Bluffs to get some girls to hoard at her place, and that she made inquiries of a hack-driver, who told her about the Mercer girl. The peeuliar mer in which the county board has advertised for bids for its conrt house bonds has ecaused some comment already. Some of the banks feel teuchy beeanse the board favors one of the banks of the city to the exclusion of the others, giving this bank free ady tisement and special prominence by de- claring that the bonds will be deposited there, and that the suceessful bidder can there gev the bonds and there pay for them. It is also claimed that the board can make no such arrangement, «s under the law the connty anditor has to turn them over to the county treasnrer, who gives a receipt for them, and th county treasurer, and not the board, to sell the bonds. r objection raised in fir is that the board propo scive no bids except for the entire amount of honds, $120,000, although only £40,000 will be delivered now, $40,000 to eliveredin October, 1 the remain- $10, mm not to be delivered untilJune, 1 idea of pidding on bonds witioh tho' purcliiser ounhot. linve for o year yet is said to be very foolish, and thosc who are posted in sueh matters de t the county will by no means rable bids as would be made if Nlflm! at atime was offered s are fivst elass, and with anee to allow a good i farge nmll unble to restrictions wnd alively se the bonds. By the peculi made by the board, it is claimed that the number of bidders will be smaller than otherwise, and the bids will not be as high 1t is also urged that some broker might bid on the wliole amount, intending to take for some customer only §10,000 of the amount, and after getting what he wanted, might afterwards decline to the rest of the bonds & year from now. It scems that there is no end to the amount of eritici Lled forth by the manner of advertising for the bids. A Card.
