Chieago Tribune: Mention was made some time ago of the death of James H. Paine, a miser, who was a large stock- holder in the Chicago Land company. In the exchanges from the New York clearing house received by the Metropolitan bank ot that city recently was a package of roasy, old-fashioned bank notes amount- ing to $12,300, the notes haying been is- sued by the Metropolitan bank when it was a State institution. In October, 1861, Paine deposited a draft for $52,500 in the Metropolitan bank, drew out $12.500 in eash, and received four deposit tificates for $10,000 each. A short time ago Mr. Chickering, one of the exceu- tors of Paine's estate, presented the cer- tificates and received the _$40,000. the certificates carried ~the alleged interest the money would have increased to nearly $20,000. The $12,000 in bank notes were the same bill given by Paine a quarter of a century ago to make up the balance of the drafts. The bank refused to redeem the bills m cur- rent money on the ground that the six years’ limit, which wus declared in 1868, when the bank became a national one, and which was to the e that the bank would redecm its notes_issued under the stace law for six years following, had ex- pired. Mr. Chickering will bring suit against the bank, Brought Him Back. Sig Turkelson, the 13-year-old run- away, is once more at home.
