The Interesting Story Told by an O1d Showman, New Haven Union: “Speaking of curi- osities,” said an old showman who was being entertained by some New Haven friends the other night, “did any of you fellows ever hear of the big snake Blackie and its still bigger mate Rube All di claimed knowledge of the curiosity ex- cept from reports, and requested the speaker to proceed. He did so, as fol- lows: “Well, Jake Townsend used to own half of them, and another man, whose name I have torgotten, the othor half. They got hold of the snakes in a curious manner. A vessel arrived at Salem with about twenty snakes that had been captured somewhere. Jako Town- send waited to get the first choice, but another man had the inside track and got the best of him. He got first choice and took cleven for about £600. Townsend paid $1,250 for the three largest, and named the largest Rube and another Blackie, I have forgotten the name of the smallest one. Well, Townsend and his partner hired Billy Vincent, a noted snake man, to take care of the snakes, Rube and Blackie were anacondas and the smallest was a boa-constrictor. “Townsend and his partner put them on the road and they were thought to be worth more than an entirve circus. Inside of two months Rube was thirty-six fect long and proportionately wide. -~ Blackie was not as large by three or four feet. Well, when the show ‘struck Vermont it was about time for the snakes to shed, You know, when a snake comes out of his old skin he is ravenously hungry, so a lot of rabbits were kept on hand ‘when the time approached. Bill used to take them out of their glass-top box every day, and giye them a bath to help loosen” their skin. Bill took them outone day, and after their bath put them back and left the lid open, He then sat down and be- gan torvead. Well, he read awhile and fell into o d All of a sudden he woki up, and as he opened his eyes he saw b fore him, looking at him like grim death, the smallest of the snakes. Lying on the floor was the skin of the snake, which it had crept out of while Bill slept. Bill didn’t dare move for he knew it would be his death signal. He always swore he sat there and looked that snake squ the eye for three hours. Good ¢ stantinl oevidence, however, places i three minutes. “Finully the snake dipped down and went toward a where there were s Quick a flash Bill was at another cagi d had thrown a rabbit to the ke and opened the cage door. He left it open so thetBHAIES could help himself, and then got out i pretty lively order. Bili was seared most to death, and didn’t go there till the next day. He opened the door, and the first thing he saw was Rube trying to ge! the rabbits, which he had chermed.” Bill cot hold of a rabbit and threw it to him, 3y the time he had that down Bill had another for him. Well, Bul kept the up until the snake had swallowed twely jackass rabbits, ears and all, ands whole chicken “The next day the other one shed and was fed his share. Well, sir, from that day until they died they never wer known to eat another thing—Townsend soon after sold Blackie and the boa. In 1848 he and his partner took Rube to California by way of the Isthmus. When they got down in the tropies the glass top” of Rube’s box was left open and he ot out while the passer on the steamer were at dinner ou can im- ine they got below when he was found sunning himself on deck. Bill w! Iled, but when Le came the snake war no- where to be found. It was thought he had gone overboard until he was found by a sailor betw some cable that he had pro for anothersnake. Bill got him his box by putting the box alongside and lifting him in by sections. They got the reptile safely to 'I° nd before they [anded a man pamed Bassett came on board and bought out Townsend’s ps ner for $10,000 and expenses of bringing it to California. At the first show the guve they took in $2,000 in clean mone, R Probate Judge Hamner of Council Grove, Kan., reyoked all druggists’ per- mits for selling liquor in Morris county on the 1st of Tast month. Closing at a Three-Quarter Cent Gain Over Yesterday — Live Stock Reports Vary as to the Market's Condition. CHICAGO GRAIN MARKET. CnicAGo, Teb. 4.<[Special Telegram.]— WiurAT—~Wiheat closed yesterday and opened to-day at very nearly the same points. The market displayed firmness quite unexpected to a majority of the traders, and advanced g @%ec, May climbing to 84%e. The heavy weights made their appearance at this june- ture and offered property on a scale of great liberality, pushing the market down ¢, May striking 835%Cc and showing great weakness, One or two Jarge scalpers, who had been long considerable amounts of wheat, let o on the downturn under the belief that the market was going to smash. In the meantime outside buying orders multiplied, and the sustaining force of this business eventually made itsclf felt in hardening values. The price steadily advanced and the bear party, after trying unsuecessfully for an hour to stem the tide, drew off, determining apparently to offer no further active opposition, but to lot the bull senti- ment exhaust itself if it would. By 12 o’clock 3 selling at 841ge, and the market was seemingly as solid as a rock. The tone of foreign advices was rather less bearish than usual, and the posting of the amount of wheat on passage to the continent and the United Kingdom, which showed about 6,000,000 bushels less than at the correspond- ing period about a year ago, reports that about 250,000 bushels had been taken in Bal- timore and New York for export late yester- day and this morning, together with a wen- eral revival of count confidence as manifested in an inereasing number of orders from the interfor, all contributed to the firmness that infused the erowd attel the early break, The bears hold that to-day firmness is ephemeral, and that when the de- mands of the country bulls are satisfied, the market will react and drop back of its own aweight. The report that the northwestern millers had lowered their bids at country points in order to discourage further de- liveries was seized upon as a bear argument, This, added to 1ill selling b alpers toward the close, caused prices to fall away, and at 1 0'clock May was quoted at 84'ge.
