He understood that such a homicide was legally jnstifia- ble i this country, and his iistake is pretty sure to take him to the gallow: le 1s an Italian with the aspect of a Sicilian bandit, and he substituted a very small amount of Americanisms for his native characteristies during about a y of residence in the squalid Halian qual ter of Mulberry street. A woman noted in that neighborhood for beauty, {hough her loveliness required Italian eyes to sec it, was Gaetana di Stefano. She lived with a fellow countryn Jean Bucei, until he decided to bring hi own wife from Ttaly. It was amicably arranged months beforchand that she should be trans »d to Depolido when Mrs. Bueei arrived, and that was done with a regular wedding, to make her Mrs. Depolido. Eleven days ago she was deliberately shot to des hh\ Depolido because she had maintained an intimacy with Bucci, who was younger and com lier than her husband. “The murdere was arrested and, owing to the usual difliculty in_ getting testimony from Italians” against their comrades, all the witnesses have sinee been kept in the house of détenuon. They agreed that Depolido announced his determination to slay hi wife, and now it transpires that he thought he had legal adviee to do so. He beeame desperately jealous aad revengeful. T Tombs in closo to. his abodo, No. 05 Mul- berry street, Shyste uwyyers abound there, Hewent fo one of them, and in half-understanding English inquired if maritally-wronged husbands were pun- ishuble for taking the lives of their rival He had his ragpicking bag on his back and was an outre object. His inquiry was treated jocosely, and the remark was made: *“No, w don't hang husbands who kil their wives' lovers,” Depolido took that seriously. He had previously betieved that he had a vight under our laws to punish his faithless spouse with death. He told her 8o as a warning, but she derided him and went to keep an assignation with Bueci. Her slaughter ensued. Depolido rested casily in prison under his delusion until his counsel undeceived hin HUMPHREYS’ Manual of all Diseases, By P, HUAPHREYS, . The Market Plugged With More Wheat Than It Could Stand, THE PRICE TENDED DOWNWARD. A Remarkable Increase in Provision Stocks on Hand Gives the Pit Strength—Bayers Indiffer- entin Oattle Teading. CHICAGO GRAIN MARKET. CiicAco, Feb, 2,—[Special Telegram, ] WheAT=Wheat was heavy to-day and the price tended downward. The visible supply decrease was not 500,000 bushels greater than the estimates, and the bears felt encouraged to sell early for that reason. Cables were quiet and export inquiry was very slack, nevertheless the stalwart bull commission houses were on hand with a faiv number of buying orders. The market held reasonably firm, but the crowd was in a selling mood and plugged the market with more wheat than it could stand, the brokers doing the heaviest selling. The impression gained ground that the big professjonals, who have been in the background fora few days wateh- ng the market to see how it would be held without them, had taken hold once more, and that they were on top for a down turn. No special effort was made to create this im- pression, but the idea found lodgement in the breasts of many of the observers of the it Mivon Grarys—Corn was very quiet and disposed to weakness on account, prineipally, of the inerease in the visible supply. Oats experienced no change whatever in price, fluctuations being nil, Provisions—The statement of local stocks of provisions published this morning was gratifying to the bulls in that product. It showed an increase of 15,000,000 pounds over stocks one month ago, and 45,000,000 pounds over stocks one year azo, when pork was §1 per barrel higher and lard correspondingly above the present quotations, ‘I'he exhibit was not a surprise to either party, but it was as favorable as the bulls could hope for, and stocks were less formidable than the bears had anticipated. The market was according- ly fivm and prices higher, A good deal of peculative activity was displayed in the pit and an unusually large outside business was reported. A NooN BoArp—Wheat opened 'Je higher on the afternoon board, eased off a tritle, and closed the same as at 1 o'clock. Provisions advanced sharply, May pork closing 20c higher than yesterday, and lard “lge higher. 5 . m.—Puts on May wheat, 8515 silge. ; calls, CHICAGO LIVE CmieAGo, Teb, 2.—[Special Telegram,|— Carrri—The market this morning was in a peculiar condition. Fresh receipts were mod- erate, and sellers rather expeetea that buyers would be eager for all the useful eattle. Iligher prices’ were asked, but the buyers were disposed to move rather slowly, They were selecting only a few of the elioice offer- ingsof light and hoavy, and were inclined to negleet common, lean and rough lots. ‘Fue: is always an “off day” for eastern ship- pers, and consequently they were holding back. Dressed beef men were not willing to pay the brices asked, as they felt confident that the exeiting telegrams sent out about yesterday's ot being higher would yicld aharvest of cattle later in the week, The New York market, though active and stronzer carly on Monday, closed w and some cattle went over unsold. quality of caftle offered to-day not very good.
