The report of the city treasurer shows that there was yesterday but $128 cash inthe police fund. This whittles the cost down to so fine a point thut it puzzles the city financiers how to meet the bills which ought to be paul from that fund. The trouble seems to be that the saloon Jicenses have not come in for last month. Only eight or nine saloon men paid the January licenso, and there were more than that number who were behind on their December license, so that in fact the city has received no cash for saloon licenses for January, This leaves the police fund very short and causes considerable head seratehing as to how to get along without it T'he saloon men claim they have had to pay out more than the license moncy would amount to to defend their cases in courts. { lso said |I1.\l Judge Aylesworth 11 hold that the *‘pop” ordinan no account if a suit is pre: deters the cif frou ng stron the court nml’n\uruwuw \u'TI«.umus The Cuullcll Meeting. A Difference Between the Mayor and Chief Results in the Latter's Resig- nation—A Democrat Plum from the Council Tree. Open Letter to Omaha. Cousein BLurrs, Feb, 1.—~Dear Owma- 114 There are moments in a man’s life when the pain and remorse of the soul is wute that it can only be compared to that experienced by a truly good person when they sit down on a red hot stove and 1 only be assuaged by coprous ap- plications of some great remedy even of undoubted merit. Thus do the souls of the Council Blufis coasters avise and cry aloud in their wrath at Omaha and seream for eleven buckets full of gore, not common red gore, either, but bright searlet gore (even as the slaughter house goreth.) ‘Lhe roar that the boys from the Bluffs are making at our little mushroom subarb across the river makes me think of the fable old Asop used to tell ns at school about where the frog got mad at the old heifer beeanse the heifer was big- ger than the frog and the frog got so mad and blew air into himself in such vast and atmospheric quantities that his skin couldn’t hold it and he bust (even as the cotton deal busted in Council Blufs,) In the first place Omaha, as the chal- lenging party, should have had Mayor Boyd at the dipot on a white horse with a banged tail to meet the e ters and have mvited them up to Higgins' to take After that was done, and after lad liquidated the bill (even a Council Blufls Tiquidates her city wanr- rants) the mayor should ha had about e driven by (also with their tails banged), and have h.ul!ml the couast- ers on to the hill and pr4-~uv||x-ll them with the freedom of the city in a gold <nufl hox, even as V uw‘hh.q- presented it to Lone Wolf.
