Business called me n Inst tall, and when 1 v hogs were dying at the rate of twenty to thirty per day. The previous spring I had planted ‘'many pumpkin seeds, and ..the ground was covered with the ripe fruit, so I told my men to commence feeding pumYkins, and so they brought in load after load and we gave' the hogs all they could possibly eat. For the first fow days there were several deaths, but they soon ceased, and that was the last Isaw of the cholern on my place. The reporter immediately scored a point in favor of the pumpkin, and gives all readers the benefit of the same, - Try Adams Bros' goods and see if you don't get your money’s worth in boots, shoes, slippers and rubbers, Lindsey & Co., y from home urned I found my 3 Killed in Coupling. The committec of the board of trade, whose special province is to look after manufacturing int ¢, has taken up the plan outlined in the BEg, for the for- mation ot an incorporated company re manufactaring here It is proposed to organiz company with $100,000 capi The stock will be di- vided into shares of $1,000 cach, and the cash on these subscriptions will be ealled in only so fust as the company finds need of it. The purpose of the company will e to secure manufacturing onterp here, and, when neccessary to nvest moncy to gt manufacturers to locate ‘there will he o capital to draw upon. For instance, thes parties talk- ing now of starting a ain kind of fac- ry here. They want to start with 000 capital, and propose to putin {wo- s of it themselves. They are men of experience and capital, and are will- ing to invest both time and moncy. Sup- yn:v”n' manufacturing company with %100,000 of eapital stock should, after in- vestigating th itter thoronghly, con- clude it good thing. The company could decide o invest” one-thivd with thesemen. The 8,000 thus required could ly be had, for it would be an assess- ment of 8 per cent on the £100,000 capital stock. A man having one_$1,000 share would be called on to pay $50 on that sh: Many citizens would be will- & to contribute that much for securing a 000 factory here but under this arrange there is no hegging for donations or soliciting for subscriptions to stock. The shareholder by paying his $80 in- vests that much money 1t ) i to be a profitable business. _Another f: tory may be started in a different line, but in the same v sharcholder by paying his assessment pays that much *more on his stock. The money which he thus isso divided around wmeng the different factories that cven if some of the enterprises should not prove as profitable as was hoped, still the invest- ment as & whole must pa All these en- terpri nnot prove lures, and the chances are that the investments will prove profitable, while at the same time the eity 15 built up and all branches of business increased and the value of proverty enhanced. There is hardly a business man in this city but what would gladly invest $1,000 if guaranteed that the city wounld thereby secure within two_years $300,000 of new manufactories. That is just what such a company proposes to do. It calls in the capital ‘only ns good chances for in- vestment present themselves. By the time all the stock is d up Council Bhufls would hay ived start in manufacturing which would give this city an increase that ever d of business would be benefitted, and the business man investing and thus reaping a double benefit, could well afford to sub- ribe liberally. A short timé ago an _ instance occurred which well illustrates the advantage of such a compan terprise of @ to ses 5 necessary to secure it was for the citizens to invest The man had some capital experience, and proposed to put in time and moncy. With such a compan s proposed the matter could be loo! ofully, and if the enterprise the investment the com- ily secured the $3,000 by aissessing the stock 3 per cent, which would amount to $30 for a $1,000 share, 1t would hardly pay for a_man to spe his time looking aiter a $30 investment in a manufacturing enterprise, but the company with its total interest of §3,000 could well afford to have a careful sight, and through its ofl ctive interest in its wise manag In whatever way the plan may be viewed it seems feasi and it is safe to com- acturing hoom cil Bluffs, and without the sacri- fice of any personal interests., A number of the most carcful stantial_citizens have already cxj their willingness (o take at least #: L in the company, and there now pems every reason to believe that within afew weeks eyery dollar of stock will be taken, With a Nome company 000 ready to iny in legitimate manu- facturing enterprises, Council Blufis will bein a shape to talk business to those who desire to locate here. When the citizens of a place have faith enough in its future to invest th ) ter- prises of this sort, it is com easy toinspire a_like confidence in those who are non-residents, Money talks, It is all weli enough to urge strangers to in- vest their money in manufacturing enter- prisos here, but such advice counts for ittle so long ascitizens themselves refuse to invest a dollar. With this new com- bany and its $100.000 capital, Council Bluil can act consistently, and can talk business to those who mean business. predict that the organiz pany will ir i For first_cluss Missouri wood call on Gleason, athis coal oftice, 26 Pearl strect. R Broadwell W the Stripes On. Deputy Marshal Mullen returned yes- terday from his trip to Fort Madison, whither he took 8. A. Broadwell, who was sentenced to three ye in the pen- itentiary for obtaining money under false pretenses. The trip thus taken by Broadwell was in strange contrast with that taken by him over the same road not long ngo. Then he was a prominent real estate dealer and money lender at Logan. He had gained not only a high local standing, but had a wide acquaint. ance thronghout the state, and ‘boasted of intimacy with the governor, occupied a position on the governor's staff, and was on the top w with a sunshiny sky. When he went over the ro: that time, in company with some fellow members of an association to which he belonged, his money was being spent like water. He had ‘a special car, and champagne, and cigars,” and delicacies were furnished by him' for all, free as air, This last trip over the road wasin strange contrast. With cruel shackles upon him, he had to content himself with a seat in an ordinary day coach, and thus pass the night with an ofticer for a com- rade. On the trip he met but one ac- quaintance, and he was only a casual one. Deserted by all those who in his prosperity fluttered about, himj the trip Was @ dreary one. Still' he Stood up avely under the burden of sorrow, 1 showed no sigiis of breaking down, until after the penitentiary was reached.
