S e o DL T A e S THE DAILY BEE SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 19 /685, LINGOL. The Fifth Dey and Practically Last of the Nebraska Fer, —_— Diegracefal Presenoo of the Large Number of Orooks, A Card from August Saunders Exon-| orsting Jobn Bheedy of the AT THE OAPITAL, THE BTATR FAIB, ‘Tho fifth day saw no change from the fine weather of thore preceding and the attend- anoe, though not o large as upon Thursday, when it was estimated that there were 80,000 people on the grounds, still came up to the attendance of Wednesday., There were many farmors who drove their own teams in from the country surrounding Lincoln for a dis- tance of thirty miles and camped sut near the fair gronnds, Yesterday was principally de- voted to tho races and the awarding of prizes, In the free for all trot for a purse of $600, the following were the entrias: McMahon, A, 8, Holliday, Lincoln, Ne- braska, Elmwood,Chief, R, T. Kneebs, Sioux City, Towa. Deck Wright, A, Coleman, Springfield, | W. H. Eim- wood second, St, Cloud third, and McMahon fourth. In tho race for four-yoar-olds, Nebraska bred colts, Consul won in threestraight heats, Time, 2:414, 2:35, and 2:513. Gladya sscond, Holladsy third, Patsy omith and Jennie Cobb distanced; balance of the horses with- drawn, The board of managers state that they have paid up the indebtedness of the association claimed to bave been created at the Omahs tair last year, In addition to this they siy that they will have a handsome surplus over when the money is finally counted up and the bills are paid, ‘The fair hes certainly been an anqualified success and this result is partially dus to the board of managers, The Burling- ton & Missouri company wmade enough money to baild another bravch live, while Lincila ‘dealers estimate that somsthing like $3.0,00) was epent i tha city by outsiders, Yesterday afternoon visitors commwenced leaving the city in large numbers, exhibitorato pack up their exhibits and propare them for shipment, and everything about the grounds Iast night assumed a chaotic appearsnce, It is not expected that the attendance to day will amouns to much, The Nebraska state falr, favored by tair weather in » double sense has beon & well attended, meritorious show, and it is greatly doubted if any state in the union haa a finer one, Particularly conepicu- ous in the display, making a worthy exhibition byiteelf, was the stock, The cattle cannot bo excellod anywhere in the world. and it was | justics. The facta briefly stated are these: On August 4, 1835, Mr. Sheedy received a Jetter from Mr, Oorville (not Corwel)), aeking him if there was a vacant store toom which he could rent, in which to carry on during the fair his_*‘photograph gift enterprise.” The letter I now have in my possession. Mer. 8, came to me rome four weeks afterward and requested mo to write to Oorville and say to him that there was po vacant rtore in town and that he desirod no further communion tion on the matter, I according'y wrote Mr, Coryille to that effect, and I know it to be a positive fact that Mr, Sheedy had nothing whatever to do with Mr. Corwell's being in Lincoln during the falr week, I trust that yon will publish this in order that the truth may be known, AUGUST SAUSDRRS, State of Nebraska | Lancaster county. | August Saunders duly sworn on oath eays that the statement hereinbefore made in trae, AUGUST SAUNDRRS. Gross carelessness is the only cause that can be assigued for the es- cape. The men who flod wero those crooks ‘who have been working the town during the fair, and were in what is callod the iron- clad ecoll. The cutting of the wall could not have been accomplished with tools at thelr command —common knlves -intide of twenty-four hours uless outside aid was given, The names of the men sscaping were H. Cap- tain N, P, Lundine, ot York, a thorough ge tleman and military man, A bad break was made by Company I, which ieft them out of tho contest, All the companica desice to thank Adjutant O, (i, Bates for cfficient ser- vices during the encampment. The winning con pany of tho day ba- fore, ompaty E, of Fremont, chaered Unp- tain Phliips’ conipany as it left the parade ground, a very courteous performance on their part. All company commanders seemed to be eatisficd that the succeteful command had fairly won the prize, ATOUT IHE CITY, Night before Iast, two men giving their namos as C. W. Armor, who claimad to keep alivery stable at York, and G. H, Bower- stone, wera arrested by a detective on a charge of running ohell game, There did not teem to bo any evidencs of o substantial charactar against the men and they were allowed to go. ‘The Merchsnts hose team ball night before last was a great success, and enjoyment reigned supreme until a late hour. Thureday night burglars entered the resi- dence of K. B, Mower, agent for an_agricu!~ tural house, and carried away a fow articlos of value, Early yu!erds{ morning shots and hurrying feet awoko the sleepers ia the vicinity of O and Tenth streets, but tho origin of the matter was uuknown to the polica Shme of tho alleys of Lincoln are in a filthy cond| Odors which would be creditable to Bridgeport, Illinols, are wafted into the noetrils of denizns of thoss buildings which abut the alley running from P to O stroets, between Tenth and Eloventh. The health officer should exercice himselt a little more, Thera were about twenty cases before the police court yosterdey for crimes and plain [smAt) drunks, They were disposed of by fino or continuance. W, Welfe, A, 8, Batber, Ed. A, O'Brien, Charles H. Dewey. H. T. Clsrke, John T. Olarke, and many others. noticable thut the foreign exhibits of catils in every case were inferior to those from our own state, Thoe stallions and graded horses were also very fine, the Lmported Percheron and ‘Norman strains being bettor represented than any other, “'ha wenlth and progress of Nebraska could in po manner have be«n better brought to the Enowledge of those living in the state than by thedisplay made atthis fair, AN EYPLANATION NREDED, During the week now closing Lincoln never saw a0 many crooks within its corporate lm- its. Why this was 8o remains for_the unbi- ased observer to determine Wednesday nightin the opera houete twelve men were robbed of their watches, in the bustle attend- ing the coming in and going out of the aud- ience. Duriog the same night svveral other pockets wero picked, other depredations were committed, and apparently the ol y was given up to the outlaws them:elves, Ii 18 not fawr to charge all this apon the police, although, 1n & manaer, they were to blame for a laxuess which is hardly equalled in any town, c'ty, or village in the Umited States, " Police feater- nized, sympathized, ond drank with crooke, It ocanmot ba charged that there Was col'usion between tho police and tho c,imipal element for cuch is not koown to ba a faot, but it is certain that there was too much robbory in Lincoln, too much wickedness of all kinds, Taimble- riggers, wheel of fortuns ruen and women, e aLar. gambiig. and s kin dovioes wers allowed full swiog, Mayor Burr will have to answor to the paople of Lincoln for sma of ¢his crime, In the first place, & numlvr of hia epecial appointocs were wholly nnqualified for the tasks put upon them. Sose were physically incompotent, otbers wers morally and mentally uosuited for the work. No one was to blame for this but the mayor, who wade the sppoiatments, Just look at some of the crooks’ work, Oue man's pocket was picked of $i70; another ome was robbed of 8300 0dd; two or thiee were re- lieved of over $200; while several had $100 taken from thew, and the number of small thette is almost beyond computation, What number of arrests were made by the polic.? Oue only thathas been held for trial up to|C this time, and he escaped. 1t wil be remem- ‘bered that on Wednesday, sfter Charles Bruce, who robbad a lady and way arraigned in the polioe court last Wednesday, and re- manded to j.ilin defuult of ball, jumped from ssecond story window of the city building and escaped, Somebody s st fsult here, bat this wat there might be some excuse offered. It is not all. Yeosterday one regular officer arrested two fakirs for working on the streets, Oae was a female of attractive appearance, who ran small wheel of fortune cstensibly for the sale of suide jowelry, snd the other was a man who had a thimble-rig arravgement of some kind, They were taken before the mayo who in each caee rald ‘Lot them work for to- day,” or worde to that ¢ffoct. The schemes were both for robbery, A myeterious phase of this business is that these fakirs are all under the supervision of Pon Courvi the luading lights of America in all games of a crooked kind, sud other criminal schemes, ‘This fine-haired gentloman was all up & "phul‘(‘wgn fake,"” which is awindle. ‘The idea is to set up » large rack wupon which are set photograpbs io rows, Be: hiud some cf them are supposed to be suma of mouey ranging from $1 to §6 or §8. By a curious colncidence umobserved by simple minded persous nene of thess wonderful cards put out of postion. The mayor of Omaha refused the m: license in that euL, but he was reccived with cpen ancs bere, and when the supes werearrested they were lmme dia'ly turned loose with the kind permission that thoy “could work to day.” There is yet more to recite, The ity was vever in so bad condition of morals as at present, Sowe of this wickeduess must buve b:en brought to his knowltdge through his police forcs, o8 in tho case of the two fakirs, The wmayor, justice to himeelf, should cxplain these thiogs ‘and thero never was nor never will b @ more portune Lime than the presect f “1'... ation, The columus of the B £0'te mayor for this purpose o CARD FEOM AUGUST SAUNDEES, T'o the Brk - I notice iu your_issu day under the headivg, *'Caruivals Ciooke,” written by @ elty reporter, that you scouss Jiha Sheedy of haviog wniten to one Y'Pond Courwell,” requesting bim o cowe to Linccln snd semaln dwioy fair week, Lu thus matter you do Mr, Bheedy a grestin Some lady, whote name coula not bo learned, had her shoulder dislocated by bsing thrown from a buggy.
