Thomas and George, two stalwart boys, were the hope and pride of the father and mother, who were approsching the confines of a hale old age. The brothers were yet in thelr early twentles, belng the children of thefr parents’ middle age. They were frank and genercus youths, and thelr open hearts and willlng hands made them nelghborhood favorlites, In the vicinity lived one Van Arson, a small farmer, This man was of secretive, sullen natare, and hareh, forbldding man- ner. Envious and suspicious, the popu- Jarity of the Singletons wes sufficlent to make him hold agalnst them a deadly grudge. Tom Singleton was the proud owner of & mare that had never been beaten on the quarter track. THE RACH, In the fall of '72 great was the excite- ment in the entire ccmmunity, for, Tom Singleton’s Hoaler Girl had been matched sgaicst the Kentuoky gelding Blus Graes, and the race was to be run on the mare’s own ground. The important day came at last, and the quarter track was literally walled In by the crash of specta- tors and the sanguine and enthusiastic Hoorlers had wagered heavily on thelr home product. One Hocsier, however, was 80 exceptlon—a dlshonorable ox- ceptlon, his neighbors considered—and that was Van Arson. He had ataked hls money on Blue Grass. Van Arson had thrown the stick, end » num- ber had seen him in the act. George Singleton msde his way through the press to where Van Arson stood, and after s few words laid his whip acrova his shoulders. A knife gleamed for an instant in Van Arson's hand and was burled in George Ssngle- ton's beart. A dczen strong hand were on the aseassln at once, and the cry, “Hapg bim! hang him!” was heard was heard from all eides. THE LYNCHING. The race courss lay along the bank of & narrow, but deep and rapid tributary of the Ohio, and in the immediate vicin- ity this stream was crosssd by a high bridge. Towards thls gc:ffold the mur- derer was hustled and pushed by the esger crowd. A rope was acon procured; one end was secured to a stout, project- ing timber, and the other was noosed around the prisoner's neck. Twilight had now gathered over the scene, and around the dark group of executioners were thrown the sinlster shadows of ap- proaching death, Thers was a sudden push and scramble, balf-emothered shriek, and Van Arson's body shot darkly into the gatherlog shades below.
