THE DAILY BEE. UOUNCIL BLUFFS Friday Morning, September 11. Office No, 12 Pearl St, Delivered by earrier Lo any part of the city or twenty conts a week, H. W, Trox, MINOR MENTION, Flower pots at Homer's, 23 Maln. Relter, merchant tallor, for fine goods The olty council Is to meet this even- 1ng, or at least make one of its trys. A cme of doctors Instruments has been found, the owner of which can find the same at the Bee office. The legal contest over the chleftain- ship of the fire department ls to come up in the superior court to-day. The Hebrews held appropriate services here yesterday, conducted by Mr. Ham- merslough, of Milwaukee. Mre. Mitchell, head trimmer in H. Friedman’s millinery store, has gone to Ohleago to look up the iateat styles, Albert Kahl, the sixteen months old chlld of Willlam Kahl, of Keg OCreek, dled of lung fever on Thuraday, and was burled yesterdsy in Mineola at 2 o'clock. Yesterday belng the 10th of the month, the U. P. boys were made happy by re- colving thelr checks for August. The employes on the street rallway, also be- ng Unlon Paclfic employes, recelved thelr checks too. Ferguson & Son, of the Paclfic, are feedIng thelr guests on julcy, tender beef of thelr own ralsing and fattening, the product of their stock farm. It's a blg advantage for a hotel to have such a baso of supplies. The Johneons, & colored family of a good deal of Plerce street notorlety, were before the court yesterday on the charges of reslatlng an officer, disturblng the peace, ete, Thelr cases went over until Monday. New mattrosses wore belng placed In the new jail yestordsy, and everything put In readiness for the recoptlon of the prisoners, who were marched over Into the new quarters about 5 o'clock, . They numbered fifteen. ¥red Lamb while collecting some bills was set upon by & dog who lunched off of one of his calves, Fred now has the permit of the city marahal to shoot the dog on sight, and 1if he can't hit him there he will put a bullet Into some other part of his body. Susan F. Flesher, who has been in the asylum at IMt. Pleasant, and who was allowed to come home for a brlef vacation about two weeks ago, has been taken so violently insane, while vislt{ng Mrs, James ‘Wright In this city, that it became neces- sary yesterday to take her In charge and start back to the asylum with her. Raymond & Campbell, the well known bridge bullders, have just clossd a con- tract to bulld two brldges in Henry county to cost $27,000. Both bridges are to be of iron, one to havea 250 foot span, and the other 60. The bridges are to be put iInRome, near Mt, Pleasant. An accident befell a son of Mr. Mer- rlam, a huckater, as he proceeded along ‘Washington, avenue yesterday In a wagon, The boy In some way fell off, and down behind the horse, which kicked him In the chest. The boy was taken to his home, a little out of the clty, and the extent of the Injury has not been learned, but it appeared to be serlous. The following were the bids opened yosterdsy for attending to the pauper oases of the county here for the ensulng year, and farnishing mediclne: Dr, Oleaver, $350; Dr. danchett, $500; Dr. White, $300; Dr. Bellinger, $297; Medi- cal Assoclation, $600. The board did not make any award of the contract yester day, the bids belng Iald over until this morning, E itor and T.ensee. The county board carefully Inspected the new jail agaln yesterdsy, and took pains to measure and examine every de- tall 50 a8 to be sure that the people were getting all they pald for, They seemed perfectly satisfied, and could find no flaws or caus3 for complalnt, The] board seems to be especlally careful, and the taxpayers cannot but rest easy at the prospect of the new court house project belng in the hands of men who have thelr confidence, and who show such de- termlnation to have every dollar go as far us possible, A number of search warrants and writs were lssued by Judge Aylesworth yester- day, and placed {n the hands of officers, who hunted up the places where 1t was supposed that liquors were belng sold without a license belng pald. In each case the officers reported that they could find no llquor, or else the places were closed up. When one of Council Blafls’ officers cannot get into a saloon, or find | O, something to drink, it s clearly proved that elther there is no saloon, or else the barrels are dry., They are making thor- ough work In this line, There were several plain drunks in the police court yesterday, all of whom were fined except one, named Merrlam, who clalmed that he come to town with only fifceen cents, and that after spending five cents for a glass of beer, he proposed to gemble with the rest of his capital, but was ordered away from the table, and s he did not want to go, a policeman was called on to arrest him, and he was ocharged with belog drunk The jaller testified that Merriam was not what he would call drank when brouoght {n, and Merrlam insisted that he could not see how he oould get drank on one glas of beer. The jadge concluded that the police had put him In to save him loeing hls money, and so let him go, his ten conts belng handed him by the clerk. MORE MANUFACTURING, A Move to Raise $100,000 to En- courage Such Entervrises in Council Blaffs, Oouncll Bluffs needs more manufactar- lvg enterprises, and with a little exertion on the part of her cltizens and moneyed men could easily increase the number. This fact has been patent to many for a long time, but each seems waltlng for some one else to make a move, snd what Is everybody’s business 1s no ones. A scheme is now belng talked up,and prom- Ises to prove a success, It being in brlef an organization with ample capital for encouraging and fosterln manufactaring enter- prises here. It Is proposed to have one hundred shares of §1,000 each, making & total of £100,000, and this to be Invested in different enterprises as they shall com- mend themselves to the judgment of the members of the organization, If, forin- stance a manufacturing enterprise wants to locate here, It can be encoursged by this organization taking a certaln amount of stock in the company, The city has many advantages to offer as a manufac- turlng polnt, and 1f besldes these advantsges, & man desirlng to start an enterprise here could be assured of some help and encourage- meut, such enterprises csuld easily be socured here, More than this, the mere fact that Councll Bluffs' own cit!zens stand willlng to Invest In such enter- prises would be a clinching proof that those who llve here, and who have every opportunity of judging of the advantages of the city, are #o contident that 1t 1s a good polnt that they are willicg to Invest their own money, and take a part of the risk, instead of ng strangers to do 1t all. Such a showlng of confidence in Councll Bluffs would do more than anything else to establish confidence In others. The plan pro- posed is to have each share of $1,000 pald In only asgood Investments are found for it. If, after securlng subscriptlons for the whole $100,000, some enterprise Is found, which 1= a worthy one, and which would locate here, the company would {ake 10,000 of the stock, then each share would be called on for §100, and after another good chauce presented lt- self another assessment could be made. Thus the money will not have to be pald in all at once, and what Is pald In is not s mere free-wlll offerlng, but will prove an investment, on which the chances are that falr returns will be had. The mere profit on the Investment is not, however, the maln object to which those who are working on the plan are looking forward. The chtef purpose 1s to 8o work as to se- cure what Councll Blufls needs so badly, niore manufacturing. One hundred citl- zens In this clty could easlly shoulder this enterprise, it belng only a thousand dollars jeach, and that In installments, and $100,000 thus divided among varlous manufacturing enterprises would call into this city several hundred thousand dol- lars of manufaclurlng. The starters of the enterprise are quite enthusiastle over it, and propose to push right along to & successful completion of the organization. ————— A Card From Wm, H, Brooks, To the Editor of the Bxg, Your “Old Stager” {s wlee, Beyond what is written in your Issue of the 8th. I sm not a candldate for any office. My frlends are not looking out for any place for me, I expect to leave Iowa on the 16th, to be absent till Dacember. Yours Traly, War, M, Brooks, Tabor, Ia., Sept. 10, HE TALKED T00 MUCH. A Veteran Fireman Discharged for Telling What he Thought of the Mayor. The announcement that Charlle Nichol- son, the veteranfireman, had been thrown out of his posltion as driver of No. 1, caused no little talk yesterday, Nichol- son s a first claes fireman, and has only had one fault, and that he has bravely fought and successfally for some time, and has always been ready and eager for duty. Hence there were many surmises a8 to what had caured him to be lald cff, The solution of the mystery s sald to be that the fireman has a tongue which he uses freely to express what is on the In- slde. When he found that the mayor's little paper had opened war not only on some of his friends, but had attacked the reputation of defenceless women and in- nocent children, Nicholson’s blood boiled, and he declared that the mayor's paper would be like the Irlshman’s pclecat, lot alone It would soon dle as the result of its own foollshness, and from over-exertion, This was sald in the presence of “‘Left Handed Joe,” who immedlately proceed- ed to Inform tho edltor mayor, who promptly caused the fireman to be thrown cff the force. Such s the ourrent ex- planation, but the mayor says through his organ, that Nicholson bad too much booze, and adds slgnificantly that ‘‘he talked t0o much with his mouth,” This is the mayor’s 1dea of free speech, —— Not in Paying Quantities, When the east end of the county made such an eflort to got a term of court and a deputy clerk established at Avocs, there were roseate pleturings of the amount of business which would be done there, but the report of the clerk for the past five months does not show that it I investment for the county so far, needs developing badly, From the first of April to the first of Jung the followlng were the recelpts of the clerk. oollected Marriage licen; Uitizen papers Total, , .87 Dauring the months of June, July and August the followiog were the recelpts Costs collected . License Oitizen papers. Total 350 This makes the total recelpts for the five months, §134, The ealary of the clerk alone, to say nothing of other ex- pens:s during this time, was $200, —— A Hoayy Transfer. E. P, Caldwell, who was lately prac- tlclng law here, and who nas now locsted in Washington territory, has been In the clty for a fow days, and the puorpose of his misslon has now become known, He has just s0ld his farm In Monona county together with lands In Shelby county, to Mr, H. L. Votaw, the whole consld eration reaching the suug lttle sum of $34,000. The farm thus transferred con- slats of 1,037 aores, and there is a THE DAILY BEE--0OUNCIL BLUFFS RIDAY STEMBER 11 1885, large amount of stock and many Improvements. Mr. Votaw has been living In ‘Washington territory for a year and a half past, but formerly was a resldent of this state, Salem being his home. He Intends to move back to Towa and take possession of his farm, and it is not unlikely he will m: this olty his resldence, and look after his Interes's from this as headquarters. Mr, Caldwell will in a few days leave for the east, and after vislting New York, will retarn to his new home In Washington territory. e —— A Musical Cholr. Last ovening at the resldence of J. J.
