LINGOLN. The City’s Morality e Viewed from a Local Slandpoixt, Three Oonvicts Escape from the State Penitentiary, The Insane Asylum and Its Manage- ment—The Politicat Pot— State Personals, AT THE OAPITAL. THE CITY'S MORALITY, The mayor recently in a publie speech made a protestation that he desired the clty ocleansed from all moral Impurities, and that his endeavors had all been in that directlon. The records batd'y bear his honor ont in h!s remarks, for acoord- Ing to the oldeet roeidents there has never been a time when there was really a greater number of disorderly places in the clty than at present. It must nst be charged that the mayor s respousible for all tals because it would bs dolog thet gentleman an injustice, but there a things which he could remedy which he does not do. Within the past few months there havo been at least thres places started which, ostensibly respcc'adle, are the greatost pitfalls in the clty, In which young and innocent girls may ba on- trappad. One place on Tenth street, which will not bs derignited, is an as- rignation house of the most pronounced type. Ucder a thin and gauzy cubterfug the proprietor endeavora to hide from th eyes of the authorities the charaster o his business. The rooms upstairs are lua charge of a woman who will let them whenever desired. Many young girls just enterlng womanhood sra thus led astray, when othorwlse the opportunity which {s here offered being out of the way they m!ght have remained virtuous and grown into useful womanhood, The house, or rather store, in which this nefarious business s carried on, s owned by a prominent judge of this city, a man who Is now holding an Important judtolal position in Lancaster county. It is ctaritable to suppose that ho does not know what kind of people ha ls renting to, but now that he has notice, there will ba no excuze for him not to turn the pracent cocupants out. Xt 1 presumed that the mayor, if he Is attending striotly to the business of his positlon, knows these things, for there are certainly lots of people ready and anxious to inform him of them, These places hero named are but fs) Iated caser, and dlsorderly women are in creasing in the clty at an alarmingly rapl rate, Itlstimeto call a halt, and thd mayor is the proper person to do ihise Lincoln has a highly moral class of ecit. lzens, who are deeply chagrinned at the- presant state of things, snd they call for animmediate reform, Private aseigna- tlon honses and places of tha: character should b suppressed at once, and Maj oz Burr should at once start his police on the track of all euch places. It sny Ignorance of thelr locatlon {s expraessd by elthor the mayor or police, the Bee will be glad to point them out. ESCAPED CONVICTS, Night before last, as the conviots were being locked in their cells for the night, the guards on the walls saw four convicts running from the wall to the weat sidn of the enclosure, The gusrds fired, but without effect. Parsuit was made, and one of the men captared, but the ro- malning three succoeded in getting away. The wen had been empioyed in the foundry, and got cut by teariog away the wall near the shop and crawling through the hole. The men who es:aped are deecrlbed as follows: John Strunel, 25 years old, light com- plexion and halr, and weighs 160 pounds, He was sent from Gage county April 21, 1882, for burglary, for six years. John Pyle s 41 years old, and Is five feet elght Inches tall, brown halr, blue eyes, and welghs sbout 1656 pounds. Pyle was sent from Furnas county June 5, 1885, for an outrsge. Frauk Greek, the thied man, 1s 26 ears old, five feet ten Inches tall, has ight complexlon, black hair aud light blae eyes, He was sent up from Cass county in May, 1884, for two years and a half, for grand larceny. A reward of $50 for each convic has been offered, anda number of men have been sant out after them, Upto 8 o’clock last n'ght nothing had baen heard of the convicts, TROTTING HORSES AND THE ASYLUM The board of public lands and build. inge are very indigaant ovor ths appoint- ment of Mrs, Mathewson to the matron- ship of the insane asylum. Gov. Dawe) acted 1n a very arbitrary manner in mak- ing this appolntment without consulting the wishes of the balancs of the board. The gentlemen think that the best later- ests of the Institution are not subserved, and that the state 1s not getting that S e SATURDA will make an efiort to negotiate the Lan- caster county five per ceut optional bonds f he ls wuccessful the commis- sloners will probably refand the present $158,000 #ix per cent bonds which the ate now holde, These bonds have long been a source of annoyance to the au- thoritles, and If Mr. Lewis s successfal in dleposing of them he will recelve the everlasting thanks of Lancaster county. SHORT ITEMS Lieut. Governor Shedd Ia In the city on_business connected with state affairs, Lieut. Dadley, of the University, re- turned yesterday from San Francleco whers he has been with his regiment during the summer vacation, His health is goed, and he will take hold of his duties with renewed energy. The new band stand on government equare wlill be done to-day, and the season will be Inaugurated this evening by a grand concert by a braes band, A runaway team yesterday afternoon made it llvely aronnd the Commorcial hotel for a short time. The horses ran up on the sidewalk, and would have gone in the office but for the providentlal In- terposition of a tree, around which the wagon caught, holding the horses as ef foctively as If thoy had bsen anchored. The $1,000 trot between Ro!lins’ horse and one owned by a Mr. Harlbart will take place at the driving park to-day. STATE ARRIVALS, Col. E. D. Webster, Stratton; E, P. Davis, C. H. Cowing, 8. G. Mr, Myers presented the plans in person, and afzer Inspecting them the board sgreed to the propored changes and appolnted a committee to inform the clty councll of the actlon teken. A special meeting of the counc!l had been called for 8 o’clock to conslder the plans, but as Mr. Myers was detalned until 8:30 by the board of education the councilmen bescame {mpa- tlent and adjourned beforoe he arrived.
