Address John Linderholm, Cen- tral City, Neb. e ——— A Mystery Revived, It may bs remembered that on July 4th aman was found prancing about the river bottoms in Garden of Eden attlre, claiming that his clothes had been stolen from him while In bathing. The man ‘was shortly afterward seized with a fit, or nauccesslon of fits and was removed to St. Joseph’s hospital where he died the nex! afternoon, His identity was a perfect myntery, and he was buried In the pottera’ field unknown and unmourned. Yesterday Coroner Drexel recelved a let ter from a man by the name of A. H. Hudeon, of Dalton, Chariton county, Mo., who believes that this man is his #on who mysterlously dlsappeared from home about the 1st of July. He writes for Informatlon as to the dead man’s ap- pearance, in order, if pessible, to clear up the mystery. e —— Recelver's Sale. L. Smith, and now In the store rooms, 1307 and 1309 Farnam street, Omaha, Terms, cesh or part cash, and tho balance on 1inio on approved szcarlty. 0. D. WoorworrH, Receiver, — e —— e Good Sidewalks, Adjatant General Drum no doub} stated the naked truth when he sald that Ouaha was the ‘*best paved city in the union,” but if Gen, Drum had extended his observations to the sidewalks along our paved streets he might have added something not quite go complimentary to our city as his kind though truthfal re- merk about the pavements. These side- walks, with few exceptlons, ara slmply wrotched when contrasted with adjoining pavements, It Is within the power of the city councll to change thls state of affsirs and they should not hesitate to perform thelr whole duty in the premlses. They should insist upon having the side- walks along paved strests constructed of durable materlal such as srlificial or nat- ural stone and at a uniform grade. Some of the most beautiful sidewalks in the city are laid by John Grant with his pat- ent comblnation stone and slag pavement ccmposed of ths best Portland cement combined with crushed stone, sach as granite, sand or lime etone and crushed metallio slag of great denslty. This forms a sldewalk pavement of unequaled beauty and dnnblYlty, and the price is within reach of every one. Consequently there 18 no excuse loft for property holders who | have elegant buildings adjoining misera- blo sidewalks, and wo trust thas our clti- zens will move in this matter even with- out orders from the clty councll, A beautifal and durable sidewalk not only enhances the valae of adjacent property, but is a matter of pride to the whole community and the adwmiration of stran- gers whose good words are valuable to ul S ——— The Gun Olab, The Omaba Guan club held its semi- monthly shoot Wednerday atternoon at Athletlo park. Cotter THE SCOBE: 17 17 15 13 12 12 11 STRAIGHTENING THE ELK- HORN, The Oounty Commissioners ot Doug- 1as and Washington Oounties Discuss the Question— Other Oounty Mattere, County Oommiesioners O'Keefe and Timme returned yeaterdsy from Blair they have been in session with the com- missloners of Washington county, dls- cussing the matter of straightening the Elkhorn, As {s pretty well known this river In zig-zag In Its course, and when a heavy rash of water comes down the stream an overflow 1s caused which floods the lands embraced In the arms of the bonds and causes great dovastatlon, It 1s proposed to cat through these bends, and make the river atralght In its course, diminishlng Its length some three or four mlles, By doing this aud by broadenlng and deepening the channel of the stream the danger of an overflow wlll be prevented. Washing- ton and Douglas counties will unlte to pay the cost of this Improvement, the commlesloners of the former county as- eenting readlly to the proposition of the Douglas county fathers. A committee has been appointed by the Washiogton board totake Immedlate action on the matter in conjunotion with Mesars. 0’Keefe and Timme. THR FLORENCE BRIDGE, About a year ago the C.. St. P.,, M. & 0. In constructing the Florence cat-cff made an excavation below the road of 75 feot. The county commissioners at once demanded that the rallroad bulld a bridge across this polnt, with which order the company falled to comply. The case was taken to the supreme court of the state, the commissloners Intending to fight the mattor to the bitter end. The county has jus: recelved notlce, however, that the company has decided to build a bridge, and will do so without further contest. The bridge is to be of 175 foot span, and work will b> commenced upon It at once . LEAVITTS DEFICIT, Commissioner O'Ksefe in conversation with a raporter, yesterday, said the com- missloners would do nothing toward the suspension of County Olerk Loavitt un- til Mr, Corliss came back. Yesterdsy they secured the ‘‘tabs” on which Mr, Leavltt was In the hablt of making his informal entries, Mr. Leavitt had them at his house, and the commissioners were about to serve mandamus papers to secure them, when Leavltt consented to tarn them over. The werk of com- parlng the ‘‘tabs” with the fee-book will be entered wupon at once. It s thought that Mr. Leavitt's defielt will amount to about §2,000.
