WoorworrH, Recelver, Tne Charge at Donelson To the Editor of the Beg, In an article in last evening’s Bee 1t is stated that Gen, Grant ordered the charge on his extreme left at Donelson, in consequence of the dlscovery that the enemy had endoeavored to break the unlon lines by an aseault on the right and thus escaps, rebel prisoners being taken with six days’ rations In their hav- eraacks, Gen. Grant argued that a mass- ing of the enemy on his right for thi purpose would leave the left (the enemy’ right) weakened, and in this pelief the assault was made by the Second Iowa In- fantry, (Tattle’s regiment) but o much time was lost that when the charge was made the rebel rifle pits and trenches were found filled with men who had been ordered beck to thelr poeition after the failure of the mornipg as:ault on our right. Maters of Interest on the Varlons Lines of Road, Arbitrator Bogne Coming to Omaha ~The Oregon Lease—Personal ‘ana Other Mentions, The Chieago Tribune of Taesday very interestingly says: “Mr. George M Bogue leaves to-day for Omaba, where he will be jolned by Mr. Willlam Dan- oan, to Inspect and examlne the facll- ues of the various roads in the Western Freight aasoclation at Omaha and Coun- cll Bluffs, In order to ba able to come toa eatisfactory conclusion regarding the percentage to be allotted to the roads in the Omaha and Councll Blaffs pool. Mr. John 0. Gault, the third arbitrator, will meet Mesira, Bogue and Duncin in this city by the end of this week, when they ex- pect to be able to mske the award for for thore pools,” All this {s_doubtless true and Mr. Bogue may be in the clty—In faot, it was positively stated on several ocon- sions that he had been seen this morning. He has, however, avolded railroad cir- cles and absented himself from the moot- ing atfthe transfer. THE OREGON LEASE, The St. Paul Pioneer Pross of Tues- day last contalns the following, of local rail Interest: Thomas L. Kimball, general traffic mansger of the Union Paclfic, was In St. Paul yesterday on his way weat. Mr. Klmbsll owns a large cattle ranche near Cuaster, on the Northern Pacific, and is making one of hls periodioal trips out there. Iaterviewed regarding the Oregon Navigatlon lease, he sald there was no doubt but that it would go through. The Northern Paclfic direot- ors have approved it, and the Union Pa- olfic dlrectors will do so this week. They are to moeet in Boston to-day or to-morrow. Mr. Kimball did ‘not know whether the stockholders of the several roads would be called upon to ratify the directors’ action or not He understood, however, that the North- ern Pacitio stockholders,at thelr next an nual meetlrg, would take the matter up, bat he did not apprehend any usfavor- able action on their parl, The Unlon Pacific stockholders will not have the matter befors them becauze the directors control a majority of the stock and what they say goer. Mr, Kimball did not think thers would ba any question of le. gality reised, as the proposed lease had been curofully exsmined by the respsc- tive counsels of the several roads in in- terest. The report that the Oregon Short Line would loate the Oregon Navigation roperty, and then make traffic arrange- ments with the two Paclhc roads, he #sid, was unfounded. By such a lease nelther the Unlon Pacific nor Northern Pacific would gain anytbirg, as they now have about as clese traffic arrangements with the Oregon roads as could bo made. All the dotails of the lease have been agreed upon, end nothing remains to be done but lts executlon after it has re- cefved the approbstion of the zeveral di- rectorles, Mr. Kimball sald the report sent out that the Union Pacific had of- fered the Milwaukee & St. Paul $25,- 000,000 for fts line from Omaba to Chi- cago, was the veriest nonsense. A CRANK AT HEADQUARTERS. A genulne crank visited the Union Pacific headquarters yesterday and took in the whole bullding. He was of a re- liglous torn of mind, and carrled with him a large brass crucifix and three vol- umes on the evidences of Christianity. In each of the departments he dellvered a peoratlon on the evils of this world, and urged his hearers to desert their wlcked ways.
