Mayor Boyd Says that the Saloons Must Close at Midnight, and Keep Olosed Front Doors on Sunday, For some time past Mayor Boyd has been consldering the advisabllity of elos- ing up the saloons of this olty on Sunday or at least compelling them to shat the front doors, and also of closing them up after 12 o'clock at night. Yesterday ho made up his mind to carry out part of the programme Immediately. In the afternoon he issued orders to Marshal Cummings to serve notlceatonce upun the saloon men that thoy must close up promptly at 12 o’'clock every night, and must keep thelr front doors closed on Sanday. Marshal Cammings and his men im. medlately set to work giving the reqalred notice. All saloonkeepers will bo ex- pected to reader immedlate compliance with the order, though no arrests of those dlaobeylng will be mede uatil to- night, In order that the new state of sffalrs may be fully csmprehended by the saloon men. Marshal Commings In- formed @& reporter yosterday that he proposed to enforce the order fearlessly and without discrimina- tlon, and all dlsobeying it after lastnight will bo arrested and prose- cuted, The marshal and Mayor Boyd held a consultation at noon yesterday and the conclusion reached was that It would be impracticabls to attempt to entirely close ap the ealoons on Sunday, as all of them would find a way of evading the law. —Yesterday waa reception day at the police court and Judge Stoubsrg received many “lady” callers, They all deposited enough money to keep them out of tho clutches of the law for the next month, —A team of horses belonging to John B. Tuaray ran away yesterday on Thirteenth strest landiog in front of the Omaha Nasional bank, where they were stopped by a collision with a farmer's wagon, Tho horsos were badly cut, but no great damage, otherwize, was done, James Wallace, a lunch man 1 Hornbor gex's ealoon became involved in fight, his op ponent, who was becoming slightly worsted, bit hus finger. I propote tc have the saloons running just as they were when was mayor before, with closed front doors on Sundsy, and shut up entlrely sfter mldnight. Certamly thera will be no trouble in enforcing this order. The ordinance which provides for the licensing of the saloons, makes 1t an offense punishable with a $100fine for & saloon man to keep hls place open after midoight or on Sunday. Why It ban not been enforced durtng the preced- ing adm!ulstrations I can not see,” ““Will the new order of the mayor affectiyour business serlously?’ was asked of the propristor of one of the her husband.” Finally Mr. J. sue- ceoded, after a hard tussle in taking three of the children from the house, and placing them In charge of a neighbor. His wife ponred the most vituperative abuse upon him, and tried to do him bodily harm, She would probably have sucoseded In her attempt but for the timely arrival of a party of passers-by. Mr. Jones raturned to the house about one o'clock vesterd morning with a pollceman got the other child. Yester- day hetook stepa to place the chilirenfin charge of friends. The only ltem of economy which will balance the falling off in re- ceipts which closlog up at midnight will cause, is the fact that we will have no electric light to pay for after that hour. Closing up the front dcors on Sanday will not hurt the busluess a particle. Men who want to “‘wet up” will climb through the window, if neceasary, to get it.” A petitlon had been clrculated among the saloon men requesting Mayor Boyd to take this step, and it had been signed by ninety.four saloon keepers. Twenty- seven others were also in favor of the midnight closing, but did not sign the petition. Twenty, however, were op- posed to the movement, and expressed themselves as emphatically against the new order. Bt they ay they will take thelr medicine with a pleasant face and walt, In the hope that the near fature will only been released from jail a short time, where he had been confined on @ charge of beating his mother. —A policeman who has just_recently been put on the police force, was walkiog down St. Mary’s avenue Sundsy might when he heard report of a pistol from a wagon on the corner of Eighteenth street. The policeman or- dered the emigracts to give up their arms, which they did, turning over three xvolvers and arifle. The arms wero taken into police cowrt, and yosterdsy they were reclaimed by the emigrant party, The policeman was severely censured by Judge Stenberg for tak iog the course ho did in the matter. An Interesting Case in the County Court,—John Flannagan’s “Squatter Title, Judge McCalloch, of the county cour has Jrendered a declslon in the case of Seth Ward vs. John Fiannigan, an action ‘brought to forelbly dispossess the defend- ant, an old negro, of about twenty acres of land sltuate between Omaha and the barracks. The case in numberless phases has been running for the past six months In local justice courts, and in the county corsiderable in- terest. The atory of the old negro, as told on the witnees stand, Is as follows: Heo was born a slave, and at the breaking out of the war was owned and worked In Tennesece. His master's plantation was nesr Fort Donelson and he wlitnessed the devaststlon of was about that fortress. After Grant had cap- tured that stronghold of the confederacy he fled to the unlon lines where he was hospltably treated by the federal soldiers, After following the army sbout for eome wonths he saw an opportunity to make his way across Mason and Dixon’s line, and accordingly came to Omaha. Here In 1862 he farmed out his Iabor to Edwin B. Taylor, then editing a dsily, and worked the hand prees, which run cif the daily sheet, He continued in the service of Mr. Taylor until ho owed him §150. Flanvigan prossed him for the amount due, and the latter, not belng sble to meet his obligation, gavo the twenty acres of land in controversy. Tayloy, be eays, took him out to the tract, showed him its bounds, but never p.nsad the title to him by deed. Flan- nigan testified that he had lived on the property almost continuously since, The pislotifl sought to show that he had leased the land to one Elton impleaded with Flannigan. Elton in turn bad then subleased it to Flannlgan, This was de- nled by the old colored man, who eald he never had acknowledged Elton as his landiord, but had always contended that he was the sole owner of the land, C ——— For Trade,—Nance county lands for stock of general merchandlee or hard- ware, Address John Linderholm, Cen. tral Clty, Neb, —— A Wife's Wrath, Mr. and Mrs, Daniel D, Jones are a couple living at the corner of Twentisth and Capltol avenue.
