Lf this plan is adopted, thero would not be a street or a locality in the city which 2 child could not find, “'A groat many people object to having a change made in the prasent system,” continued Mr. Rosewater, “‘on the ground that the cltlzens have beccine uscd to our syatem of nowing the streets, and to have to famillarize themselves with a new set of names wonld be very Inconvenient. Now that 18 ridiculous, Within the past five years, as I said before, 30,000 people have ccima to Omaha none of whom ere fawiliar with any but the prin- clpal streets and practioslly do not know theelty at all. Within the next five years, if the town is to have 100,000 pop- ulation, there will bs 40,000 peo- ple who will settle here, making 70,000 people who have practic. ally to learn the ¢!ty thoroughly, Now wouldn't 1t bs better to put the firat 30,- 000 people to & little inconveniencs, in order to have the clty’s system of stroots a correct and simple one, than to allow the leet 70,000 people to become used to THE REMEDY, ‘‘Admitting, then, that these defects exlst, no one will deny, I suppose, thata remody ought to be applied. My plan, in a few words, is this: Do away with the present system of usming and num. bering entlrely. Fix upon some central street, as Dodge, running east and west, for the basls of the new eystem. It would be called Dodga avenue, and all the stroets running east and west wonld be called avenues. The next atreet south of Dodge, which is now Douglas, would be called Second avenus south, Furnam, Third avenue south, and so on, The next street north of Dodge avenue, now Capltel avenue, would be called Second avenue north, the next one Third avenue north, and so on. The streets running north and south would be numbered, fixing upon one of the lower streets as Firat street. This sy tem of numbering would be continued as far out as the streets running north and south are to be found. Then, if a man told you that he lived at the corner of Twenty-Third street and seventh avenue north, you could, by counting the number of avenues north from Dodge avenue, and the number of streets west from Firat street, easlly detcrmine where he lived. All the blocks should be in length 364 feet, When it happened that a block ia sub-divided into sections by cross streets coming In which do not enter the oppo- site blocke, 1 would apply the name First D For Trado.—Nance county lands for stock of genersl morchandiso or hard- ware, Address Jobn Lindorholm, Cen- tral Clty, Neb. A fow minutes before 7 o'clock, Rob- ert Thompson, an employe In the U. P, tin shops started from his home near the waterworks on the bottoms, to go to work at the shops. He had not been on his way moretha n ten minates, when he was ttruck by a bolt of lightning, and foll Instantly dead, Ho was discovered lying on the ground, face npwards, by a paseer-by, who at once notified the coro- nor. The body was at once removed to Drexel & Maul's undertaking rooms where it now awaits Interment. An investigation of the circumstances attending the case dlzcloses a most curl- ous state of affairs. The bolt of light- ning must have struck the unfortunate man on the top of the head, for on one slde of the crown is a small raw aper- tare about the siz2 of & ballet hole, while on the right foot, between the second and third toes, Is another small hole where the lightning evl- dently came out of his body. Ountslde of these two small wounds there Is not a bruise on the!whole body, of apy kind, nor in fact any discoloration. The peace- ful look uyon the dead man’s face shows that his death must have been Instantan- eous and palnless. His clothing—coat, pants and shirt—were torn to tatters, his pants, which were of coarse jesn cloth, belng ripped Into a thousand pleces. His rubber goesamer was also rlpped to ploces, while his shoes were so thorough- ly torn and scattered, in small pieces, that they could not be found. Near the spot where Thompson fell, also, there was a large hole. a few Inches in dlame- ter, and several feet deep, whero the bolt penetrated the ground. No inquest will be held by Coroner Drexel, as the cause of death is plainly manifeat. A number of physlcians and sclentific men inspected the body yesterday, and all agree that tho caso is one of the sirangest on record. The facts of the slight disfig- uralion of the bedy, coupled with the complete dentruction of the clothing, showing that the fluid must have pasted through the olothing, and_the absence of discoloration, together with other cir- cumatances, combine to make the caso of sad Interest, Robert Thompzon, the victim of the sad calamity, was 41 years of age, and a man of great intelligence and many good parts, He leaves a wifeand a family of five children, upon whom the terrible and eudden aflliction bears with crushing welght. He has lized in Omaha for a pumber of yoars and has been for some time In the employ of the Unlon Paclfic road, The deceased was & member of the Burns club and the funeral wiil be held on Saturday under the ausplces of that organization, The following call has been lasned: WRANGLING FOR A WAGON. Omaha's Need for a “Black Mariar,” and the Efforts thatare on Foot 0 Get; One, The question of ecsurlng & patrol wa- gon for Omaha’s police forece seems to be something unususlly interesting to those most dlrectly concerned, One week ago Councllman Lee Introdused a a resolutlon In the city council ordering that a team and wagon of the character named be provided, The resolution was referred to a commlittee, which reported {avorably on it last Tuesday and now has been adopted. At Monday night's meet- ing of the echool board Mr, Long intro- duced a resolution proposing to approprl- ate out of the school fund $400 towards the desired convenience. The other mem- bers, however, raised a questlon a8 to whether the board could le- gally make such an appropriation, In sapport of his resolution Mr. Long argued t1at they had already donated £5,000 to- wards the erection of a clty building and would probably give more In constdera- tion that they are to have a rcom, set apart, in that building for thelr use. Then, In view of the fact that more then half ot every fine collected at police coori goes into the school fand, he thought that the boerd could well afford to bear half the expente of a patrol outfit,t ~ Hls resolution was re- ferred to & special committee, with fnstructions to ascortain whether its vrovislons can bo legally complied with or not. 1tseems to be & gonerally entertained opinlon that Omaha has grown large enough to need the services of a ‘‘black marlar,” and enough more offenders would be taken In toeoon pay for It In additioval fines. One of the arguments used is that the disgrace- ful eight of seelng drunken men and women dragged through the atreetswould bo abollshed, and instead of belng com- pelled to leave thelr beats every time they made an arrest. Officers could ring for the wagon, which would go after the pris- oners and whirl them to jail o a jiffy. - —— Police Docket, Ralph Foster, larceny, committed to county jall for twenty dsys. J.
