6 J0UNCIL BLUFFS TueSday Morning, August 4. BUBSORIPTION BATES, By Overier » = - 20 sents por wook By M - 2 910,00 per yosr MINOR MENTION, Relter, merchant tallor, for fine goode. Little Harry, son of H, H. Van Brunt, accidentally scalded both his feet badly yesterday. The fire Iads of No. 4 have recelved a supply of olgars aa a slight recognition of the fact that they were at the fire lu the Everett block, where they did as noble work as any company Lost—Rither at the Ogden house or between the Ogden house and Maln street, a roll of bills contalnlog $170.00. The finder will be liberally rewarded by leaving ‘he same at the Ogden house. Soldiers, Attentlon !—All soldiera of the late war are requested to report at the G. A. R. hall, on Pearl street, promptly at 7:30 o’clock on Friday even- Ing, where arrangements will be made in tribate to our old commander, By order of John Lindt, P. C. of Abe Lincoln Post; Joseph Cromer, adjutant. The bottom dropped out of a case in Justice Schurz's court yesterday because of the rullng of the court that in order to show the value of a dog the fact must first be established that there was a mar- ket and a market price. The party whose dog had been slain was able to prove that there was a market for some kinds of dogs, but not of the kind that he had. The standlng water near the corner of Seventeenth street and Fourth avenue is cansing a terzible stench in that locality, and those llving near are complalning bitterly. 1If some of those who are fight- ing the cemetery so energetically would spend a little of their force In suppressing such cauees, of diseases as this, the pub- lic would have more falth in thelr profes- slons of belng Interested In the general health of the city. — —— Dr. West, dentlst, over BEE office. e ——— Sabstantial abstract of title and real eatate loans. J. W, and E. L. Squires, 102 Pearl strest. FAMILIARYY BREED3 CON- TEMPT. 1s ¢he City Jail to be a Loafing ¥lacs For Prostitutes? A dirgustlog but by no means unusual eight was presented at the city jail yes- terdsy. One of the most brazen women of {he street was hanging about the offico for & balf Lour or more, chatting with e cfficlals In a free and easy way, and exchanglng vulgarities. It was no doubt funny for the proetitute and for the offi- cials, but it was dleguating to even the newspaper mer, who in gathering up sil sorts of ltems from all sorts of people hear enough hard talk to harden their sense of modesty somewhat. The other day one of the police officers was seen starding on a prominent street, not a block from the police headquarters, and from the court, talking with a no- torlous prostitute, and from a distance it did not appear to be concerning cfficial buslness, as the prostitute In her joklng with the etar of the night, helpad her- self to a clgar from the policeman’s pocket. Such are mere Inatances of the apparent famillarlty which exists be- tween some of the most notorfous charac- ters In the city, and some of the sup- goued preservers of the peace. It has a ad look, and when the practice gets so common that the city jail cffice Is tarned into a loaficg place for such characters, and for the carrying on of an Interchange of vulgaritles of speech and jokes, be- tween prostitutes and officers, it is time that a reform was instituted. e PERNO NAL, Leonard Everett, with his brother Ned, is off at Okaboge lake for a week’s vacation, C. An Outrageous Assault on & Farmer's Wife, The report has reached this city of an attempted ountrsge on Mrs, Walters, a resldent of Jackson township, in Shelby county, and the following details are gleaned from an exchange: On the day of the ocenrrence, Mr. Walters, with a number of hands, was engaged in harvesting. In the evening, or rather after the evening meal, the men concladed to return to tho harvest field, which was folly a mile and a balf from the house. Mra, Walters and a three months old child wers the only occupants of the house. She left the bulld- ing a moment, and on her return com- menced washing dishes, Hardly had she touched a dish when she waa selzed from behind, shaken reverely, jerked violently forward and back, until she was almost senseless, She recognized her assailant as a tramp, and nerved herself for the struggle. He attempted to throw ber down, but she managed to escape his olutches and started from the house, screaming at every slep, Ho followed her, capturing her about ten rods from the house, and dragged her back to the door. Here she clutched his throat; and held on with such a grip that ho was compelled to loosen his hold, when she started agaln for the field, calling to the men, The tramp selzed a club and threatened to kil the child. At this Mro. Walters picked up & club and started for him She swung tho weapon to the right and left of bis head, and made It 80 warm that he had to retreat, Mra, Walters then hastened to the house, plcked up the child, and started for the field. Her clothing was nearly torn from her body, and she was bruised about the arms and face, aud the blood was streaming from several wounde. She had proceeded but & short distance when she discovered the men coming toward her. Sho gave one scream and fell, exhausted. The men has- tened to her, and In »n Instant realized the sltnation, Mr, Walters and one of the men worked with her a few minutes. when' she regalned consclousness and told her story. In the meantime the other men had hurried to the house and mado a gearch for the villain, bat he had departed. In short order a large force were on the track of the tramp, but no trace of him could be found. The peo- ple were terrlbiy excited, and had he beon captured he surcly would haye been lynched. At last accounts Mrs, Walters was confined to ber room, the shock to her nervous system being so great as to bring on a severe {liness. A reward of $100 is offered for the follow, who Is de- scribed as being 23 years of age, a for- eigoner, Swede or Dane, wore a black skull cap, derk clothing, very ragged. He was about medium size, heavy build, 1t s a pity that the fellow escaped. A SAFE CRACKESR. Slick Workers Go Through Spetman’s Strong Box. Successfally It was dlecovered yesterdsy morning that doring the previous night safe- blowers had been at work In Spetman & Bro.’s store. The safe had been opened very cleverly, showing that it was not the work of bunglers, but of men used to the business. It had been ‘‘cracked,” rather than ‘‘blown.” That s, the fel lows had drilled a hole through the door, 80 a8 to regch the bar connecting the knob with the other parts of the bolts and lock, and then by the use of a punch and hammer, had broken this bar, thus letting the knob turn the bolts freely. It seemed evident that the work must have been done by partles thoroughly conversant with the pecoltar make of eafer, and posted on every detail. The money drawer was taken out into the alley, and there rifled of about $75, and loft, together with notes and valuable papers, for which the thieves apparently had no use, and which they did not care to run the risk of carrying with them. A brace and drlll, chisel end hammer were found, but nothing was discovered glving any clue té the perpotrators. The er than thoss generally given by these traveling epeakers, and was fall of earn- estness and fire, The spesker showed himself to be an enthosiast, much more of an enthusiast than & reasoner, and he presented the prohibltion causs in the strongest language and most heated terms. He thought that & man might be a prohibi- tlonlst without being a chrlstian, but he did not belleve a man could be a chris- tlan withont being a prohibitionlat. He showed not a bit of charlty to those who believe in high license, and held stoutly that license in every form was aidlog In making crime legltimate, He thought that thers was great need of men In Councll Biuffs, There were enough walking machines, but men were wanted, who bad pluck enough to be true to thelr convlctions, Such men would have the courage to try and enforce the law, by selzlng the liquors, or by fillng complainta agalnst the cfficers for neglecting thelr duaties, He urged all h's hearers to be total abstainers, showlng that it did not pay to drink, and urged all abstainers to become ac'ive prohibitlonis's, o — Railway Rumblings, (CIL BLUFFS TUSSDAY, AUGUST 4, 1885, e e The New York PLUMBING CO'Y. 552 Broadwav, Council Bluffs, Iowa SANITARY & HYDRAULIC ENGINEERS PUB- LIC and PRIVATE SYSTEMS of SEW- ERAGE, WATER WORKS and VEN- The Chleago, Burlington & Quaincy rallroad, having been admlitted into the pool, the freight of this company is row handled at the frelght transfer.
