Lixcory, Neb., August 2.—On the ar- riyal of the Burllngton & Miseoati traln Saturday night from Omaha a woman who had taken polson was taken off the traln and taken to the Arlington hotel. As the woman refuses to divulge her name or any account of herselt it {s hard to gain anyihing tangible that will iden- ify her to her friands_or acquaintances hrough publication. She par- chased a ticket to Lincoln and boarded the traln alone Soon after the traln moved cut of Omaha she bogan taking somothing from o small vlal which pro dusod £p wms, and by thoe time the train reached South Bend a docter was called who adminiatsred an cmetic and injacted morphine in her arm. Condactor Granger tolographed to Ashland for s phyeicizn to meet hle train there, when the lady was transferred to a sleoper and brooght to Lincola. Conductor Granger reesived much praise for the attentien and cire bestowed upon his uafortuante possenger. On Sanday morning the lady in question was moved to the Lincoln medicsl iustitate, whers she is receiving the best of care and med- cal attention aud good proepects of recov- ering. McKnight, a young man employed at McCord, Brady & Co.’s wholeeale grocery store, on the corner of Farnam and Teath streets, met with an accident that will in all probability cost him his life. Along the east or Tenth atreet slde of the building is an area opening about twelve feet deep which i surrounded by an iron ralling some tares fec’ high. Mc- Kulght snd a frlend or two were lelsurly sltting on the top of th!s ralliog, talking, when all of a sudden he lost his balance and fell over backwards down into the area. Dave Holllster, who was near by the young man, trled to cateh hold of his coat and save hlm, but was not qulck encugh. McNight strack flat on the broad of his back on a small platform and the edge of two or three steps that lead up Into the basement of the building. When picked up he was unconscloar, and blood oozad from hls nose and mouth, He was lified out onto the sldewalk, placed in a cab and taken to St Joseph's hospltal. The physician called to attend htm thought that some of the bones in the back wera broken, and expressed doubts as to whether the ucforiunate young man would recover. A PLEASANT PARTY. The facts as gathered from the night clerk, Jue Weibel, are these: He was sitting In & small recess to one side of the front room, lightly dczing, when he sud- denly awoke and saw a man standing by the safe evidently preparing to break into it. Welbel immediataly jumped to his feet with a commanche-like yell, and grasped his revolver. The intruder at onoe flaw out through a rear door Into the dining room. Woelbel, who ls pos- seased of unlimited grit, determined to bring him down and atarted after him at a Mana P, pace. He fired tw> shots at the burplar as he was ranning through the dining room, both of which took effict. The burglar continued right on, however, forelng his way through the back door into the alley, and dutappearing in the darkness, As he went through the back door, Welbel fired a third shot which, 1t is belleved, falled to tako effoct, Search was made for the man buthe had es- caped, and was noahere to be found. The shoo!ing cansed no little exclte- mont, and the hotel was soon thronged with people anxiously inquiring, *What's the matter?” It was some time before the excitement subsided.
