Three dranks were dlsposed of In pollca court yesterday. 16 yds. fine yard wide Bleached Muslin for 81,00, at E. Dowling's. The case against the Sanders boy, for steallng from Brackett's store, was dls- * missed yesterday. Juctice Schurz yesterday united in happy wedlock E. Mannel and Miss Mary York, both of Tracy, Minn. A grand ball Is to be glven by the Ger- man ladles of the Oatholic church at TReno's hall to-morrow evening. The congregational ladles are to glve a soclal and supper at the residence of J. E. Harkness, Friday evenlng, commenc- Ing at 5:30. Next Saturday is set for the declsion of the Aylesworth-Loofbourow case. It 1s doubtful whether the declslon will be made then, in fact it will continue doubt- ful until it is actually made. The Guanella brothers went to Neola yesterday after two fellows who had been arrested and held there, on the charge of belng the ones who assaulted and robbed the German, Caster, In a box car the other morning. Remnants of Embrofderles at half price, at E, Dowlling’s. E. B. Plnney, of Fullerton, Neb., is to take charge of T. N. Bray’s shoe store at No. 102 Maln street. Mr. Pinney comes to Councll Blufis highly recommended, and belng a pleasant young man, success ao doubt awaits him, The plans for the new government building arrlved here yesterday, and cer- talnly present a fine bullding on paper. It s to be four storles and an attic. There have been some changes from the orlginal deslgn, and for the better 1t is thought, 25 yds. Good Bleached Muslin for $1.00, at E. Dowling's, H. H. Inman, the auctioneer, was yes- terday engaged in making a eale at Shep- pard, Fleld & Cook’s, and has had his hands fall this season. Harry Is as good an auctloneer as ever came to Councif Bluffs, and he gets great blg prices at all his sales, He can hold an audience until he gets the whole contonts of thelr “‘leather.” A man named Parrott had his ire kin- dled yestorday by & boy named Boecroft calling him *Pretty Poll.” He could not stand this ironical allusfon to his namo, and when some expressmen took up the cry he gotso hot at the chorus that he danced off' and kad the Beecroft boy arrested for disturbing the peace. 1t 1s needless to say that the boy was dis- charged, The Grau Opera company appeared at Dohany’s yesterday afternoon and even. fog to light houses, While there are some good volces in the company, there is 8 good deal of over-acting, and a tinge of clownishness, that should be done away with to make the company very popular, Thelr materlal, {f adjustad a little better would make the company rather & stropg one, The fire in Dorksen's barbar shop a% an oearly hour yebterdsy morning caused more damsge than ap- peared at the tlme. It seems that the joista of the floor are all charred badly, while the shop proper and the bath rooms have been so swoked and heated that the place wlll have to be all refitted. 1t Is estimated that Mr. Derksen’s losy will not fall short of §1,000, He has in- surance whioh will cover thls amount, Some damage was done to Foster's drug store by water, but this Is but small, The damage to the building falls wpon Mr, Everatt, who owns the blcck, but who 1s {nsured, It 1s a matter of congratulation that the fire was put out as it was, for had it got & good start In the lmmense drug stock next door to Derksen’s the whole block would doubtless have gone. The resldents in the viclnlty of the new Seventh street bridge are preparing & petition to present to the councll In re. gord to the bridge which the county has ~-|had better drive to the farm of Isaac THE DAILY BEE~-COUNCIL BLUFFS WEDNESDAY, JULY 22, 1885. refused to accept, beoause it is not ac. cordlng to contract. The bridge has been barrlcaded, and no approsches have been bullt, so that In its present condition the bridge I8 pronounced a nulssnce, and an obstruction to public travel, and prevents the oconstruction of another bridge. These citizens who are thus belng Incon- venienced ask that the councll notify the bridge company to take the bridge away, and in case It is not taken away, that it be thrown open to public travel. These cltizens have had no bridge accommoda- tlon for a long time, and have been qulte patlent about it, and now they want to have some conslderation pald them. THE NEW COURT HOUSE. The Building Will Now Proceed Wirh- ont Delay. Some Changes Made in the P 8, For some time the bullding of the new conrt house has been delayed by the at- tempt of the county board to make the clty counoll arrange for the Fifth avenue sewer, before the advertising for blds on the bullding, The councll ecould not see its way clear to construct the sewer this e — season, and the county board took the THE BIG FOUR. posltion that the building could not be put up untll this was done. The new county jall {s about ready for occupancy,; but It was claimed that as there was no sewer for It, It could not ba used, and the old court house could be torn down to make room for laying the foundations of the new court house, because the prison- ere, now confined In the basement of the old building, could not be moved out until the new jall was ready, sewersge and all. The board threatened to change the locatlon unless the councll solved the difficulty at once, but better reason has prevalled. A special meeting of the board wal held yesterday. Supervisors Frim and Jones seemed to be pretty well confirmed in the Idea that the work should not be started untll the clty had arranged for sewerage. Thero was considerable talk, and some of it quite plaln, and hints wera thrown out about the east end feeling still belng In appositlon to the court house belng located here, and a The Quartette of Tramps that Took Possession of the Farmer's House and Cooked Their Own Dinner Given Away, On returning to thelr homes in this clty on Sunday, after belng about twenty miles north of here, Dr. K, P. Belllnger, John Lindt, Alderman Willlam H. Mynster, and John Dann becoming rather hungry, as they had left the clty for their long drive without eating any Dbreakfast, except the alderman who was In as bad o conditlon as the others, having been compelled to dispnse of all his breakfast hurrledly, concluded they Ziegler, John Dunn’s father-in-law, and see if they could not get dinner, it belng then about 4 o'clock in the afternoon. On arriving at the farm house they found all the doors and windows open or unlocked, but could find none of the family. Dunn concluded that he would food his team and the others lald in the shade on the grass, the day belng an ex- cessively hot one, and they balng com- pletely tired out after thelr long ride. When Dann returned from the barn he had a basket of corn.cobs and went to work cooking dinner during the absence of the famlly. He served up a fine din- ner to his friends and they ate In peace, thinking that every minute Mr. Zlegler and his famlly would retarn from church, but they did not put in an appearance. So the *‘big four” concluded to play a joke on the famlly and the following note determivation to obstruct the progress of the work by frivolous excuses, Itap- peared that the county had already got ita new jall almost completed, and that it was all nonseso to talk about changlng the locatlon now that the people had voled the appropriations on the distinct understanding that the bulldings would be here. The jail now approaching completion would have to be provided wlith sewerage whether the clty did any- thing or mnot, and the court house would not be ready for occapancy for two years or more. It was finally declded that there was but one thing to be done, and that was to go right ahead with the court house and trust to the city putting In the sewer just as soon as it could. The two ob- Jecting supervisors expresced themselves as willing to advertise for blds, provided they could be glven the assurance that the clty would do the best it could. Al- dermen Bennett, Shugart, and Staub, the threo who hold over next year, as- sured the board that they would do their best to get the sewer as eoon as practic- able, and with this understanding the board adopted a resolutlon providing for advertising for bids, to be opened on the 12:h of August, at which time the con- tract will be let. It Is the intentlon of laylng only the foundation of the court house this sea- eon and bulld the superstructure next season. There have been some changes made In the plans as erlginally presented. On the old plans there was a large projection on the front of the bullding, in the cen- ter. In the new plans thls projection comes In the rear, thus making a better appearance to any one coming along the street, this projestion in front cutting off avlew of much of the bullding, unless one stood directly in front of it. Another change is in regard to the englne room d heating arrangement. In the firat vlans there was a driveway leading to the coal room and engine room, which were located in the basement. Now it has been arranged for a small and separste building back of the north wing of the court house and jall, and the engine, etc , placed there, with pipes leading to the building, To save the expense of procaring stoves for the jail the coming winter, It 1s proposed to build this house at once, and heat the jall by steam, and then when the court heuse s ready, there will beno need of any farther change than to connect the pipes. In regard to sewering the new jail It Is thought that a cess pool can be arranged which will answer all purposes for the present. which appeared in the Bek yesterday was fastened onto the table In a consplcaous place with a fork, The note read: Ix rue Woobs, July 1Y, 1885, —Mr. Landlord: We be trampa. We came to your residence very hungry and finding no one at home were unable to chop wood for a equare meal. After looking around we succeeded in firding your lar- der, and have succeeded In fully appens- Ing our hungry apperltes, for which we return our most sincere thanks. Yours truly, 4 TraMPS. The tramp then left in thelr ‘‘turnont” (which is a good name for the conveyance they wero In) and drove out of sight as goon as the team could carry them, con- sequently the farmers of Boomer town- ship and the Zlegler family seeing the note were up In armes, while ‘“the blg four” were in the clty here laughing in their aleeves about what the Zlegler folks might think and do on their arrlval home. ———— Substantlal abstracts of title and real estate loans. There has been a change in the tactlos by which Walters s hanging on to the office of chief of the fire department. It will be remembered that Walters got ont an injunction in the superlor court, re- stralning Captain Elcher from assuming the office, and the lstter filed an applica- tlon before Judge Connor to have the in- junction dissolved. This was to have been argued last evening before Judge Connor, but Walters, by his attorney, has concluded to abandon that 1ssue and start in over on a new plan. He has commenced an action of quo warranto in the superlor court, and asked for a tem- porary Injunction in this case. The new injunction has been granted by Judge Aylesworth, This action is !ntended to geot at the real merlts of the case, and to determine who has the right to the office of the chlef.
