Information Received at Headquar- ters that it is Sabsiding— The Scare at Ugallala, “1 think,” sasid Adjatant General Breck to a reporter yesterda, ‘‘that the Indlan excitement in Kansss and the reglon which has been torrorized by the recent soare, ls subsiding. It Is the gen- eral feellng among milltary men that there I8 no more ;trouble to be antlcl- pated from the Cheyennes. Asproof of this, 1 have recelved telegrams from Gen. Schofield at Chleago saying that the six companles of the Sixth Infantry which we were holding at Fort Douglas in readiness in case they should be wanted in the south, need not be sent, as the trouble Is subslding, and the Cheyennes are becoming more manageable. 1 think there Is no further danger to be appre- hended. Gen. A telegram was at once sent to Gen. Schofield, who replied that he had carefully examined the situation, and found that all such fears were gaoundless, as there was reason to belleve that the Indians could or would attempt to pass the troops frontlng them in southern Kansas., This Information has been communicated to Gen., Hatch at Ogallala, and he has published the r port. The excitement is subsiding and doubtless withia another twenty-four hours the settlera who have sought the protection of Ogallala will flock back to their homes and thelr farms ashamed of themselves for having allowed such a feeling of panlc to seize them, The fact of the matter Is, that 1f the Cheyennes and their allles attempt to strlke the northern trall and flock Inte Nebrask they will be instantly headed off by the Ninth cavalry, which is composed of the very best fightlng material and can give the Indlans a warm reception and a speedy repulse. The cost of the expositlon bullding will be at least $45,000. It was origin- ally Intended to expend only about $25,000 for the work, but the first plans have been modlfied, and all arrangements have been made for a first-class exposition bullding, the equal of the best In the country, The seatlng capaclty will be very large, over 8,000, The pli which have been drawn up by Mendelesohn & Flsher provide for the erectlon of & building 120 feet wide by 264 feet long. His dilapldated appearance exclted pity and he was told to elt down and help himself to a good square meal. ‘When he arose he asked for paper and ink, saylng that he wanted to write. He sat down and Indited a number of eplstles seemingly in a very nervous and unset- tled mood. The landlord, Fred. Coroner Drexel was Immediately sum- moned and held an inquest at the Ger- mania house. From evldence developed, it was discovered that the man's name was Frank Lawrence and that he was an old soldier, having belonged to the Kan- s Volunteers, under Lieut, Robert hite. Just before he shot himself, he wrote a letter which while almost unde cipherable may be sald to read as follows: “To the Public: In the year 1861 I enlisted in the Second Kansas and made a good soldier. By my courage, I held fourteen prisoners alone, men of the most desperate kind, My lloutanlnt‘ Robt, White, of Huron, was * * went to Kausas, In 1564 was a fine -me man(!)—shot_a border ruffian for trying to take me, In the beginning of the war Muan rebs attacked me and I shot one. * * Tenlisted"—— There the letter breaks off.
