The latest of the serles of distressing fatalitles which have occurred within the past twenty-four hours was revealed at daybreak yesterday morning, Harry Astman, block watchman on Fifteenth street, saw lying in the alley between the Goos hotel and Col. Floyd's place the body of a man, At first he thought the man was drunk, but upon closer examinatlon he found that life was extinot. The body was shockingly bat- tered and was lying In a pool of blood. He Immediately sum- moned the coroner’ and the body was removed to Drexel & Maul's, where It was soon afterwards Identified as that of Gustav Boehmke, a member of the firm of Grottmak & Boehmke, the Twelfth street grocer. An Inquest was held yesterday, which the facts attendant upon the young man’s death were brought out. It appears that he had come into the Goos hotel about quarter past 12 yesterday morning, and after taking a glass of heer asked to be aes'gned to a room up stairs, as he wanted lodging untll morning. The clerk, Claus Rusa, gave him a room In the fourth story, %;enivg out upon the alley in the rea ehmke complained of the heat, and asked the clerk to raise the window. This was done, and biding Ruea goodnight, with the re- rk that he wanted to be awakened at o’clock in the morning, Boehmke pro- ceeded to undress. This was the last seen of him alive. When found yesterday morning, the unfortunate man had none of his clothing on excepta palr of pants and It ls supposed that he must have atarted to undress and became sleepy and sitting down npon the window ledge to enjoy the cool ;night alr, tell Into a slumber. Although Boehmke bad been drinking slightly durlog the night, he was quite evidently ~mot under the Influence of Illquor when he retired, and the fatal accident can not be asoribed to Intoxication. Nelther s the theory of sulclde at ail tenable, judging from the facts at hand. The jury returned a verdict as follows “The sald Gustave Boehmke came to his death by falling out of the fourth story window of P. Goos’ hotel, room No. 3, throngh carelessness of bis own.” E. A. McClare, Geo. Medlock, John Burgess, Ben. Winslow, Patrick McGov- ern, Jacob Hauck. Boehmke was a young man about 25 years of age, and unmarrled, and for the past year had been In the grocery busl- neas on Twelfth street. The deceased has brothers in Sioux City, Iowa, and Cleveland, Ohlo, who have been notified of his sad death. The body will be held awalting thelr arrival. EARLY CLOSING. An Appeal For Rest and Recrestion For the Milliners, To the Eqitoa of the Bex. The early cloring movement {s & sub- ject that is agltating the milllnery houses again. It will be remember that about a year ago all the millinery stores agreed to close, but 1t falled to work for reasons best known to those who kept open right along after slgning thelr names to close. A number of the leading houses closed any way right along through the dull season, although they will suffer loas if a number of other houses keep open. There | i, 18 not a shadow of excuss or reason for keeping open after 7 o'clock. Itisa well known fact that the millinery busi- is done principally by ladles glrls, and there s any of business In which ladles are engaged that employe and employer needs rest and recreation 1t 1s those engaged in the millinery busi- ness. It Is a business that requires a great deal of close attentlon and worry. Some one may say, ‘Why don't those that want to close do so.” Waell, that is 0 ar as 1t goes, but the trouble is very few mlilliners can afford to leave their customers go elsewhere, and that s the only reason why a number of houses refuse to close, They hopa to catch some trade that would go to those who are cloted. Some will eay that they belleve In letting everybody do just as they please; |f they want to keep open all night, let them have that privilege; while otfieu take a more common sense view of the matter, and clalm that if all in the buslness would close ata certain hour there could certainly be no loss to any one, but would be more than repald in the needed rest and recreation, It 18 to be hoped that 1f all the mil- linery stores will not close that some steps will bs taken by the ladles of Omaha to find out the partles who keep open and urge upon them to close at an early hcur, In New York city a great many stores close at nooo every Satur- day, glving the employer and employe an THE DAILY BEE:-FRIDAY, JULY 10, 1835 oatch basins. If sacrifices of time and 'y, 1t 1s nothing more than members of other professlons are frequently called upon to make to ad- vance the yaried Interests they repreeent, and the teacher can least of all afford to be non-progressive in thls busy, bustling age of progress and improvement, The teachers of this county are as well remunerated for thelr services as are those of any other county in the state and for that reagon, If no other exlsted, should strive to have, at least, as good an institute as there is to be found within the confines of this commonwealth, and [should In all educatlonal matters, keep fully abreast with the splrit of the times and make their Influence for good be felt.
