s R R TRE, DAILY BEE: Wodneslay Morning, July 8. The docket was called yestdrday in the county court. There were some forty- nine cases for trial. ~A movement is onfoot to have all the olothing stores close at 7 o’clock excepting Saturday, The new regime will be insugu- rated to-night, all the clothing stores in the city having consented to close at the hour named. —The new police court room, when entirely rofurnished, will be as handsome as—the In- side of Patti's boudoir car, for instance, The walls aro now being covered with paer of very chaste and pleasing design, Until the room is again ready for occupancy Judge Stenberg will occupy the council chamber, Mr, Aaron Cahn bas received a German postal from Max Meyer dated June 16th, at Wleidenstadt, Mr. Cahn's native town, where his sister and other relatives still reside. Before leaving for Europe Max Meyer prom- ised to yisit Mr. Cahn’s birthplace, and his postal affords proof that he kept his promise, ~Supt. Jas, B. Bruner has received a card from W. W. W. Jones, superintendent of public instruction, notifying him that there are 14,431 children in Douglas county and as- wigning to this county an apportionment of the state fund amounting to $14,506.17, This, be it noted, is some $5,000 less than the apportionment made last July. The average per acholar is 1,005, =M. 5. A. Fleming, of the Omaha Com- mercial Men’s association, has authorized Secrotary Wheeler, of the Fair association, to ® offer, on behalt of the commercial men, a purso of 8500 as a prize in the free for all races provided the time made by the winning horse is 2:24 or Lotter. This, with the $1,000 already offered by the association, will make a free for all purse of $1,500, A meeting of the as- sociation will bs held this afternoon, it a quo- rum can be obtained. —M. 8, Martinoviteh returned Monday from a fishing excursion to Forence lake. Ho tells a fabulous story of how the fish in the boat were so heavy that the craft sauk, when he and his comrade straddled a big catfish (one of the number which they had caught) and were speedily landed on terra firms, All of tho fish escaped, except the big catfish, which had saved two very valuable lives and, of course, the two knights of the rod and line could not bo so ungrateful asfnot to allow it to haveits freodom. Consequently, they came home without any fish, but with a splendid story. The above is the yarn related by Mr, M. and his companion, Who can do better? PERSONAL, —_— G, W. Miss Hannah Smith left for Denver Monday evening to spond two months with her brother, O. S, Smith of Eagle Rock, Idaho, Miss M, Cowin, daughter of Gen, Cowin, returned to Omaha from Cleveland, 0., where sho has been living the past year with her grandparents, THE GREAT WEST What Gen, Brisbia Has fo Say: Abont Idaho, Shipping Idaho Oattle to Omaha— The Indians ot Northern Nebraska, Gen. James Brlsbin, in the city Mon- terday, en route to Fort Niobrara, where he Isto assume command, was met by a reporter for the Ber, who gleaned from his conversatlon some facts relative to Indian affalrs and matters of general in the weat. “No,” sald the general In response to a leading inquliry, *‘I have received no definlte information that my post at Fort Niobrara is to be increased from a fi company post to one of ten companles. It Isgenerally understood that such a move will be made, however. Yes, I belleve that necessity warrants the measure. You tee there are 12,000 Indians—the Sloux, Ogallallas &nd Brules—pressing close upon that quarter of Nebraska, The country is rapidly settling up—at the rate of 200 a day, I belleve—and of course there is constant danger of attack from this large mass of Indians, No Ido not think that there Is any danger of an im- mediate attack from the Indlans. 1 be- lleve there exists among them at present a perfectly friendly feellng toward the white sottlers of Northern Nebraska. It is wonderful how that portion of the state Is being sattled up. g‘he projectlon of the Northwestern from Missouri Val- ley Junotion is already working wonders in the way of attracting emigrants to the reglons through which it passes, “Soarcely less wonderful,’ ’ continued Gen, Brisbin, *‘s the way in which the TERRITORY 0¥ IDAHO is belng developed, It ls slmply marvel- ous, The state Is one of many resources. 1t has good farmlng land—will average thirty-five and forty bushels of wheat to the acra. Vegotables are ralsed in abundence thore, and are very cheap—cheaper than in Ne- braska. The great dlfficalty which the people of Idaho have had to fight has been the lack of rainfall. Irrigation has been resorted to, and this Is rspldly supplying the necessary molsture. Nearly all the good farming lands are irrlgated by ditches. Some of them very costly, too. One slxty miles long near Boise Clty will cost $1 500,000. Yes, there s no doubt but the average annual rainfall of Idaho Is belng materlally increased by these measures of Irrigation, In fact 1t Is no- ticed by paople who have lived in Idaho for four or five years that the ralnfall is much better and more evenly distributed thau it was several years ago. The lrri- gation dltches are rapldly spreading over the tlllable portion of the state, and I have no aoubt but that it Is only a ques- tlon of time before the rainfall will of it- self be large enough for the purposes of agrionltare, ““Then, 1n addition to the agricultaral interut-. Idaho has some very extensive gold and eilver m!ines, which are being richly worked. These mines are no con- slderable element of the natural wealth of the territory, and will doubtless con- tribute greatly to her development. This development, I have no doubt, is golny to bo very rapld. Tho pushing of the Oregon short line through Idsho s rapid- ly opening the county and attracting sot- tlers. Peacticelly, you ces, the Oregon ahort line 1 the first rallroad in the ter- ritory, for the Uish & Norther through bat a small corner, and an to nothing as & or in the ralliond probiem, Whe Oregon shext 1ina i doing a very large snd profitable buai Tauho, T understand, carrying lasge quan- titie of frelgh “How abouz the stock Interests of Idaho?” “They are very lmporiant alveady, and increasing every year. OF courss, the cattle interests in Idaho sre not what they are in Montana or Wyoming. Thix year the territory will gend east 30,000 cattle.” “‘Now there isno reason” continved ths general, ““why your market here should not recelve a large share of this amount. The market is much nearer than Chicago. 1 haye no doubt but that Idaho stockme: would much prefer to ship thelr cattle t Omaha than 500 miles further east. 1 propoee to see your stockyards men hero and ascertain what can be done to have the Idaho renchemen ship their stock to Omahn, There {s no doubt but that your stockyards ara golng to build up the city rapldly, proving a most lmportant factor in the growth and prosperity of Mre, D. W, Woodman, accompanied by Mr, Charles Woodman, has returned from an extended western tour. They report much enjoyment and benefited health, E. D. The Strange Disappearance of a Young Man and Its Cruel Effect, Dr. Brown, the phyalclan of Crelg hton block, was called upon Monday evening to attend a ead cave of attempted sulcide, The victim of the attempt of ecf-destruc- tlon was a young lady, well known inthis ocity, and of respectable parents. For fomily reasons, her nama s withheld, It appears that the young lady has been for ayear or two on terms of frlendly in. timacy with a youog man, who Is widely known in Omsha, and had, it Is thought, engaged herself to him, Their rolations haie been, apparently, of the moat friendly natore, Lzet week, however, he young man left the clty without 83, nga word to his felends or hls affianced. A singlo letter written by amutual friond of the two, brcke the mews of his de- pariure to the yourg lady. Tmmediately upon thoe receipt of tho lotter on Saturday, the girl fell nto a deep d('up(nhlunny which she has never shaken off, but which rather bas delven her further and further to de:paration. On Mondey af- ternoon she retirad to her room, telling bor slsier that sho would lio down and try to sleep. At ruppsr tims she failed to respond to a call, and her folke, bo- coming alsrmed after repeated umm;.u to srouse her, burst in the door, There they saw a sad eight. The girl waa stretched out upon the bed perfectly unoonsclons, whils on the cheir bealde her ways a half empty bottle of Jaudanum, which showed but too plalnly the sad me of eelf-destruction to which the despair of the decsived girl had driven ber. Dr. Brown, who was lwmedistely called, applied the proper restcratlve aud succeeded In bringing hor to con- sclonsnese, A% alate hour to-day ehe Is cported out of danger. The letter recelved by the young lady, | with names omitted, runs as below. |l written In a half jocular straln, whick atra unbecoming, and which mast only have served to heighten the cruel offect of the missive “Dear Miss It is in sc- cordance with the d request, as it were, of a dear friend that I now address you. POLICE COURT. A Thief Sent to Jail—A Hard Tussel— The Routine Work, —_— John Harris, the young man arrested Sunday night at the complaint of the Millard hotel people was arraigned yes- terday for steallng a gold pin, He was clestly proven guilty and was sentenced to imprlsonment In the county jail for thirty days, ten of which are to be served out on bread and water. Harrlsls evident- 1y a tough one. He is quite boyish in ap- |} pearance, But is over 30 years of age. He clalms to be one of the crew In the Bear rellef expedition to the Greely party. On the way up they were stopped by a man who demanded Chuck’s release. He was beaten off, and again the officers resumed their journey jail- wards. They had nearly arrived at thelr destination when Chuck made a desperate attempt to free himself, but was unsuc- ceesful, Officer Turnbull desling him two or three instractive blows on the head.
