It1s understood that theo have been making a tour over the Nebraska branches. The most disastrous washout that has occurred onany railroad in Colorado this season took place on Monday afternoon at 4 o'clock, on the Colorado Central branch of the Unlou Pacific In Clear creek canon, bztween the forks of the creek and Blackhawk, and extending up the left fork of the creek from the forks of the creek to Idaho springs, Tt hed been rainiog lightly all day, without dolng any damage. At 4 o'clock a cloud burat took place in the mountains batween the two forks of Clear Oreek, about four miles this side of Blackhawk and carried with 1t down the track great trees, boulders, and vast quantitles of dlrt, covering the track completely for several miles, carrying away two bridges at the forks of the creek, and numbers of smaller bridges scattered along through the canonsleading both to Central and to Georgetown. The track {s washed out for a considerable distance and it will take fally three weeks to repair the demage. About 300 yards of track waa aleo washed out in the csnon about two miles above Golden. When the washout ocourred, the operator at the Forks of the creek sent a metsage to Denver very nearly as follows: *‘The bridge at Idaho Springs Is washed away, and also the bridge at the Forks of the creek; the statlon is now going. Good bye.” Then tho bridge at the Korks of the creek broke, a ~ part of It struck the statlon house and carrled away a part of it, which was the operator's reason for sending the above missage. A cloud burat occurred yester- day on the South branch of the Union Paclfic between Mitchell’s switch and Buffalo station which resulted in the track belug covered up for several hun- dred yards with dirt and stones, The damage, however, was very light as the debris was soon removed from the track, A very jolly party of summer tourists from Leavenworth, Kas., went north laet evening over the North- western road in a speclal car, en route to St. Paul. The party consisted of Hon, L. T. Smith and wife, Mlss HelenSmith, Mrs. Gardner, Mrs. J. B. Lambert, W. C. Sprague ard wife and W. T. Hewitt. From St. Paul they will make a trip out over the Chlcago & Northwestern road, In their speclal car, to Portland, Oregon, and other points of interest In that coun- try. ’R. S. Hair, general passenger agent of the Chicago & Northwestern road who arrived In Omaha Wednesday evening, left for Chicago yesterday. The Black Hills people have eecured the first assurance, after many broken promises, of early rallroad connection with the outside world. Hope long de- ferred had a depressing effect on business In the varlous towns and camps, yot - the struggle for life under high rates and bull trains was carried bravely on for nine long years. Now the locomotlve headlight blazons in the dls- tance, and ere 1886 has rolled away the calllope of commerce will wake the echoes in the mineral-crested hills and valleys. The letting of the contract for the grad- Ing of the Northwestern extension from Chadron, Neb., to Rapld Clty has stimu- Iated business of all kinds, At Rapid Clty the effect of the announcement, glven by the officlals of the road, was electrical. Parties who were undeclded whether or not to bulld durlng the pree- ent season are made more anxlous to im- prove their lots, and every property own- er of the town believes that times will be far better here during the summer and fall ot the present year than ever before and that the coming of the rallroad will make of Rapld City the most important polnt in Western Dakota, or the entlre territory. The contract calls for grading 101 mliles of roadbed along the line of survey north from Chadron, and this Is the distance from Chadron to Rapid Clty, Itls certain that the whole distance will be teacked before October 1, 1886, and that on or about that date the Black Hills may celebrate the advent of the first locomo- tive. At the present time the compan; has not determined upon the course it may take in extending beyond Rapld Clty; or when such extension will be made, The latest news from the grade line {s that work has already been com- menced below the Cheyenne river, and it is believed graders will be employed be- tween the Cheyenne and this place the resent year, The town site of Chadron glll finally been located about four miles east from the site chosen by the first set. tlers and a majority of the people have moved to the new location, Mr, A, A, Talmege, first vice-president of the Missouri Paclfic road, and a party 31 rallway officlals will be in the clty to- ay. i brakeman ramed Kay, while throw- ing the switch tor his train at Gilmore Wednesday night, was attacked by two traps and relieved of a gold watch, val. 27| ued at $250, The thleves eacaped. 10| 'BAH FOR THE FOURTH.
