The game of ball yesterdsy between the Avocas and the Council Bluffs Ath- letics, resulted in a victory for the visitors by ascore of 14 to 10. The sad news reaches this city of the death of Mrs, Jones, nee Lizzle Palne, of Hastlogs, Neb., who had many falends and acquaintances here. Willard Fry, who has been on trial on the charge of placing a rallroad tle on the track 80 as to ditch a Rock Island traln, s acquitted yesterday. The Buchanan comedy company ap- peared last evening In *‘Oar Bachelors. The size of the audiences indicates that popular plays at popular prices are popu- lar indeed. Deputy Marshal Mullen has returned from Oakland, Neb., where he had been after the team stolen from W. T. Cole, The man was not caught, but the team will be here to-day. The time for taklng out common car- riers license has arrived, but no applica- tlons were made to the clty clerk yes- terday, the carrlers waiting for the new ordlnance to bs framed. The alarm of fire Tuesday night about midnight was caused by the blazing up of an old barn in the rear of the Revere house. The buildlng was owned by Henry Paschel, and the loss was only nominal, The festival to be given by the ladles of the Congregational church at the resi- dence of J. M. Phillips, and announced to take place Saturday evening next, has been postponed untll some evenlog next week, The transfer is being touched up by the paint brush and made to appear newer. The great Improvement which would please Councll Bluffs would be the moving of the whole establishment nearer the center of the city, Charles McDonald, who was arrested for makiog threats, was discharged yes- terday. The trouble seemed to have been a neighborhood one growing ount of clothes drying on the line fn one yard and dusty carpet belng beaten on a line in the next yard, Ofticers Smullen, Casick, and O'Brlen took a spaem of enforclog orders as re- gords vagronts and pulled seven inhab- itants of ‘‘rotten row.” The seven were at once turned loose sgain without even having their names booked, ocouraging to officers waking arrests, From reports received from Washing- ton, the struggle for the prstmastership of tals city ls becoming very hard, Tom Bowman is in Washington with ex.Con. gressman Pusey, and Dr, Miller, of the Omaha, Herald, at his back, while Pail Armour attcnds to his duty here, and Wells Cook, who returped from a visit to Nebraska City to see J. The fellow pretended to be giving lectures on physigomy and showed Kirk he had all he wanted to handle by butting Kirk several times In the face. The change In postage rates went Into effect yesterday. The change Is one of weight rather than rates, a letter weigh- Ing one onnce now belng sent for two conts, whereas previously It has cost two ocenta for each half ounce. Newspapers, by the pound, go now at half the former rates. = There are no new development con- cerning the chieftalnship of the fire de- partment, beyond the fact that Walters does not want the force cut down, but will ask the council to reduce his ealary if 1t must economize some way as the council has refused to allow him any pay, clalming that Elcher Is the chief and the one entitled to the salary. The offer is rather refreshing.
