Next Monday the normal Institate will open In the Bloomer scheol bullding for a neaslon of three weeks, The regular literary and soclal was held last evening at the young men’s christian aseoclation rooms, " The case of Adam Miller vs, George Smithson, on account of work and labor, came up before Justice Fralney yesterday. George Peters who was arrested for disturbing the peace was yesterday morn- Ing dlscharged by Judge Aglesworth without a hearing. A lawn party was entertained last evening at the reridence of Thomas Of- ficer, and thls evening one will be glven at the residence of W. H, M. Pusey on ‘Willow avenue. A canvasser was yesterday taken In, and when brought before the pollce judge pald the costs, $4.60, and also took out a license from clity clerk Dalrymple for $5.60 good for one month, After a trial of three and a half daye, in the district court, before a jury, Mr. Lay, of Nebraska, was found not gullty of obtalning goods under false pretenser, from the firm of Groneweg & Schoen- tgen, E, 8. Flagley and H. Sifley were ar- wosted for being drunk, on lower Broad- way, by Officer Towns. Sifley clalms to be a speclal detective. 1f he can prove this he will be sentenced to a long term In jall, Ed Campbell, je., of Falrfield, marshal for the southern district of Iowa, Is ex- pected daily to arrive In this clty. W. M. McCrary, deputy ma.shal In this city, is the only one here whote tenure of of- fice is controlled by Mr. Campbell. The new offices, In the opera house, of the Council Bluffs water works company and the New York plumbing company are belng fitted up In fine atyle by Mr. Birkin- bine, the manager. When completed they will have a metropolitan appearance. Each letter carrler isallowed a vacation of two weeks during each year without loss of pay. They generally take this lay off in the summer. To-day Dave Witter opens the ball. Hs place will be filled for the next two weeks by H. V, Slead. Archer Harvey yesterday made Infor. mation to the effect that Oharles McDon- ald threatened his life with a revolver because Harvey was cleaning carpet and the dust flew over into McDonald’s yard. Both parties are colored, and reslde on ‘Washington avenue. Mike McIntyre was arrested agaln yes- terday for belng drunk. On being let -out of jall Monday he promised the jailer to leave the city, but he dldn’t get very far from the jall tefore it was found necessary totake him in again, He still had $24.80 on his person. Charles E. Taylor, engiceer at the transfer, has recelved a telegram an- nouncing the death of his next oldest brother, Albert G., In Springfield Massa chusetts, of quick consumption. He was a member of the thirty-seventh Massa- «chusetts regiment and contracted disease in the army. Mrs. N. J. Hubbard, who lives on Harrlson sireet, has filed a petition In equity asking thet John Hammer, who has a stable near her lot, beenjoined from depositing manure where the smell <can annoy and dvmage her, She says he has so deposited 1t, and aeks that the nuisance be permanently abated. It Is reported that a Mrs. Boree Is lytog slck and in a starving condition on avenue I, near Tenth street, with three gmall children who were yesterday crylog for food. The parties who reported It at the pollce station eay they could not find the oversecr of the poor ard that others esy the same thing, The marshal and many others make the same complalnt, Etta Oaks, whose sporting name is Lillie Woods, yesterday came over from Omahas and got out an attachment for her tronk, 1t belog at Kit Edward's place, where the festiva ‘‘Lillie” formerly boarded, and was held by “‘K(t” for some unknown csuse. Justico Schurz accom- modated the Omahs female, and Officer Wheeler went after the trunk, M, B, Brown, the Western [ 'sion mansger in this city had Robert Buchan- an, of the B sn comedy company ar- rested for posting bills on the new tele- graph poles, and Bochanan compromised the matter by paying the ofticer for his troble and agreelog to take the bills down, Nothlvg was sald though of the bills that were stuck cnto the lamp- poste. The ne’ proceeds of the children’s ser- vice at the Baptist church on children’s Bible day last Sunday, amounted to #20 and bave been forwarded to the Awerican Baptlst publication socicty. The emount roalized was not the ouly gocd result, for the children wera trained towork for others, end the large audi- keepers to the 'United States clreult eaurt, No, the Ber does not know when he will do so. He does not have to do it untll he yete & good resdy. Yes, the the motion was made before Judge Loof- bourow In the case pending in hls conrt, and he has not rendered a declsion yet, and has set no time when he will. Oat at the Institation for the deaf and dumb the foreman of the printing offlce has a box fall of plgeon holes back of his desk. One day he pulled off his cuffs, rolled them up end stuck them in one of the aforesald pigeon holes, Soon a little wren flew In through the window of the then deserted room, and decided that Inside the rolled cuffs would bs a fine neating place. She was not disturbed, and now Is settlng on her little eggs. The window belng left open for her, and no one !s allowed to molest the bird or disturb the nest. One of the first lessons the dear old grandmother gives her children must be in stealing, from the fact that the new local editor hooks on to the artlclein Monday’s Bee about Smith, the Omaha dry goods man’s skipplng out and re- produces It in yesterday’s Nonpariel as original. Why not acknowledge that it waa pasted into the dear old lady's scrap book and a few originsl lines after con- slderable effort, run In to help out. Pos- eibly it was an overalght, or the grand- mother’s small famlly of children may think her growing more childlsh in her old age and she would not notice it. The attorney for the state has filed a petition praying Judge Conner to fix a date for hearing a motion to dlssolve the injunctlon issued In the Cross case. The judge has complied, and fixed July 14th asthe date, and Council Blaffs as the place. It will be remembered that after the death sentence was passed, it was ordered that Dr. Croes be sent to the panitentlary to await execution. An appeal was taken to the supreme court, and pending the appeal Judge Ayles- worth {ssued an Injanctlon restralning the sheriff from taking Cross to Fort Madlson. This Is the Injunction which is now sought to have dlssolved. One of the reascns to be assigned is that Judge Aylesworth had no jurlsdlction. The Bee mentloned the fact that no- tices had been served on John Ahles, T. N. Bray, Matse Wise and Ferguson & Son, ordering them to abate nulsances whish were alleged to exlst on their re- spective premises. It was notlced also that one of the parties spoke roughly to the officer serving the papers. The Bee did not givethe name because it was not thought of sufficient Importance. But the gentlemen whose namesare mentloned desire that the statemtnt shall be made more definite. Therefore the Bk will sav that it was Mr. Wise who took ex- ceptlons to the service, The nuisances are belng or have been abated, except in the case of John Ahles. In his case the examination was made and uo nulsance could be discovered, so the costs were taxed up to the complaining witness. ———— Relter is offering great bargains at his merchant talloring establishment, No. 310 Broadway. L. Felt, of the wholesale hardware firm of Keellne & Felt, was off on a purchaslng tour with W. Edward Elam, their head buyer. As long as they confined themselves to thel own line, thelr purchases were satisfact- ory. Bat one little investment they made in & qulet way In gent’s farnlshings they made few remarks about, While In Detroit they decided to each indulge In a soit of new underwear, Ac- cordipgly they called on an honest Eng- lishman, and selected some garments that they consldered first-clars. The h. E.[de- clared that they were Imported, and tha he had all s!zss and ocould fit them exact- ly. He named a price that seemed very low, and winked as he requested them not to give him away. Now they knew a smuggler when they saw one. The re- sult was they gave him good American a'lver for nis foreign articles, and told him the size they wanted. He winked ay much as to eay ““You are two sharp ones,” pocketed the cash and very neatly rolled up the goode. Next morning Elam thought he heard Felt reading the ravlued version, and using the word ‘‘sheol.” Elam made no remarks, and soon Felt called ont, ‘‘Say, how do the —— thingsfit?’ Elam, who was not purchasing then, and so thought it unnecessary to oonfine himself too strictly to the trutb, and replled, “Oh, fiest rate, they are elegant.” l“all thought he heln‘l a susplolous grunt, so he carefully looked over the transom and saw Elam puzzling himself as to how he could fasten a No. 52 under shirt so it would not sllp off. He concluded to watch for the resunlt that he might profit by the ingenuity of his friend. finally solved the problem by pulling on the drawers and buttoning the waistband just under the arms. Those sults of underwear are lald away fo walt until Forepaugh's show comes when they will be presented to his glant. ————— Substantial abstracts of title and real estate loans, J. W. and E. L.
