8 HE DAILY BEE Tuesday Morning, 1June 30, LOOAL BREVITIES. ~The clearings of Satarday were $128,- 817.03, of the past week, $2,45,308,50, ~The o1ty treasurer and his assistants are busily engaged in pushing personal collec- tions, —Two steamboats, said to be of the Sioux City packetpassed down river yesterdaymorn- ing, stopping for a short time at the foot of Farnam street, —A gamo of ball was played Sunday be: tween the Ccllins, Gordon & Kay and the Paxton & Gallagher nines, resulting in favor of the former by & ecore of 22 to 8, —A new beer garden was opened by a man by the name of Smith, near Hascall's park, day, The vroprietor of the place left a coat, said to contain about $200, hanging up on‘one of the trees, and some thief made off « with it=no clue, ~In Judge Anderson’s court yesterday the case of Mra, Kinaly va, Mrs. Carmichael ter- minated in a judgment of §5 for plaintiff, The dsfeuc'ant was sued because her cow broke into the Kinsly garden and ate up mome of the vegetables, —An engine which was being painted in the Union Pacific shops Saturday, taking ad- vantage of an open throttle and sufficient steam, startod off at a rattling pace and be- foro it could be stopped, ran into a turn table pit. No one was severly injured, —Complaints were istued in the police court yesterday against Mamme Stilts for using obscene language; against ¥, M. Netz- ner and Mrs, Netznef® for raising a disturb- ance; and against Mrs, O'Brien for hitting Mre. John Haley on the head with a ham- mer. The latter defendant has given bonds to appear on June 30 for trial, —Sanday's game at the Athletic park, was a very tame one, The Athletics could not manage to bat Rockwell’s curves, and the result was that the Unton Pacifics had an easy walkaway, The game resulted in a score of 18 to 2 in favor of the old.standbys. Be- tween 200 and 300 people witnessed the game, —Mrs, Geo, A, Hoagland very narrowly es- caped, Sunday, what might have been a most serious accident, While driving up Sixteentb street past the city jall her horze switched the lines out of her hands onto the ground, Luckily, Col. Smythe happened to be close at hand and quickly caught the ani- mal before he could start to run, —A Bchemian loan and building associa- tion has lately been Incorporared. The officers of the same are John Rosicky, president; K, 'W. Bartos, secretary, and Y. J. Kaspar, treasurer, Monthly payments into the same will begin on the second Monday in July. 1t is incorporated on about the same princi- ples as the Omaha and Mutual Loan and Building association, —Mr, J.J. Kalina, from Collinsville, Il1., is in the city, visiting his brother.in-law, Mr, Frank Bandhauer, and looking up his chances to locate hers, Mr, Kalina has invented and patented an iogenious device in vehicle springs, which enables the body or bed to ad- just or level itself on any kind of roadbed, d leasens, if not entirely does away with Mxklnx. Tho lower soction of the spring is larger than the wupper, bent on ends, which are supplied Wwith elastic buffers or cushions, The upper section as on each end a couple of anti-friction rollers, between which are inserted the ends of the lower sec- tion of spring, If the road bed is uneven, lower on one eide, the bed of the vehicle will slide to that sice, seeking a level, If the road is rough there is no jolting, but only a slight sliding or rocking movement of the vehicle, —1In referring tq the business sensation of yosterday, the failure and absconding of L. L. Smith, the dry goods merchant, there is one man (Wm. C. Taylor, agent at Omaha for Bradstreet), to whom the wholesale mer— chants owe a debt which should wuot be for- gotten, From the day that Mr. Smith landed in Omaha Mr, Taylor insisted to his corres- pondents that Mr, Smith’s business methods would break hum, and no representations oould swerve Mr, Taylor from his opinion in the matter, Salesmen, as is often the case, would try to almost force favorable state- ments from Mr. Taylor, in order to induce their houses to fill Smith's orders, butin no oase has Mr, Taylor failed to warn dealers that they were playing with “edged tools.” Itcame to Taylor’s kunowledge that Smith was endeavoring to get copies of the a gency reports, and he therefore issusd an order to all of Bradstreot'’s offices warning them of Smith’s desire, and forbidding compliance with his wishes, The mourners at Smith's funeral would not be there to -day if they had followed Bradstrest's reports, and they may get & peculiar comfort in calliog for and read- ng Bradstreet on Smith, which report will probably open freely to the public to-day. v Seal of North Oarclina Tobacco is the best. ———— Buy Palmer’s Son’s Fireworks for they are the largest and finest goods—for eale by Max Meyer & Co. e —— Mr, Luclen Stephens returned Saturday from a two weeks’ visit to friends in Bloom- ington, TIl. An Exciting Time on Oapitol Avenne ~A Bwede Held up, Saturday night, or rather early Sunday morning, the people in the vicinity of Twelfth and Oapltol avenus wera treated to an escapade In whick a wicked burg- Iar was the prominent figure, It appears that the thief had taken an axeand walked boldly Into the house of Squire Gentry, on Capitol avenue near Twelfth, and proceeded to go through the mansion in the approved style. He gathered up a lot of clothes belonging to a lady and a coat belonging to Mr. Gentry, but did not take them, as there was but very|m little money In them. He invaded the bedroom of Mrs, Mitchell, a lady stop- ping In the house, and trled to find some money which was under one of the pll- |5 lows. A femlnine scream or two drove him out, when he realized that the good poople of the house had become aware of his presence. He ran out Into the alley and In trying to make hls escape, clam- bered over a length of the rotten fence which gave way with a orash.
