The next point of importance Is the beautiful clty of Rawlins with a populstion of 2500, apparently an enterprising and thriving community., A stage line runs to the yet undeveloped but promising oil re- glons and the mining camps of Atlantle City and Miners Delight, in the county of Johnson. This line also connects at Fort Washakle and the Shoshone Indian Agency. Another lline traverses the country south until it connects with the Denver & Rlo Grande rallway In Colora- do. As yet we are in the limits of the cattle country, vast stockraising Interosts Lelng centered here. Among the solid institations of Rawlins deserving of special mentlon, is the gen- eral merchandise establishments of our old time Omaha friends, J. W. Hogus & Oo., the senlor mem- ber of which firm is now sojourning in in Pasadens, Cal. I met the manager of this establishment, Mr. J, C. Davis, who {s not only a capable buslness man, but one whose overflowing courtesy extended itself even to me—stranger In a strange land that I am, Through him the writer made the acquaintance of a large number of Rawlins business men, and was generally recommended to the good graces of the city. Two banks, the Brunswick and Mavwell's hotel, and a $45,000 court house are also dls- tingulshing features. Water and how to get 1t being a deslderation here, it speaks wellfor the rallroad company and private enterprise that the former has built an artesian well, the flow of which Is suffi- olent for all ordinary purposes of the town, while the latter is constructing a mammoth tank and connecting wells. This supply Is intended as protection + | against fire. Leaving Rawlins at an early hour I made Rock Springs at 8:30 a, m., and tled up for the day. This matter, the employment of d | Chinese labor, is a source of much 1ll- feeling hereabouts. No cause is assigned for preferring the Mongolian to the Cau- casslan miner, beyond THE CHEAP LABOR ONE, And yet the writer accords with the prev- alent opinfon, that white labor would be more beneficlal both to the railroad com- pany and the country, However since the strike of 1875, still, doubtless wlthin the memory of the BEE's readers, John '\ \ = SR\ AN Q) SR\ NN vtz e AROAD GLAIN: » wogine 'ZRY BEST OPERATING. OGDEN 18 ADVANTAGEO In a business sense, It termed the ‘‘Junctlon City,” as five rall- roads make it aterminal polnt, the Unfon and Ceutral Pacifiss, Denver & Rlo Grande, and the Utah Oentral and Utah Northern, the last two belog branches of the first-named, Competition has not, however, bene- fitted O den, an the benefits naturally re- sultant therefrom have been nullified by the pooling system. Untll recently the paseenger and ticket departments of each road—the Denver & Rlo Grende and Unlon Pacific—werecouducted separately and surreptitious rate-cutting was more or less In vogue, but now there is a jolnt agent, who, of course, malntains rates, Regardless of all draw- backs, and there Is no place of its alze in the count suffering from more, Ogden, never the less, does a large wholesale business throughout the adjacent territorles. ‘The clty Is well lald out, Its blocks being much larger than those of Omaha. I was a store girl before my mar- menced the erection of similar institutions ence being a’ primal tenet of the Mormon faith. Because of the namber of railroad men here, Ogden has the largest gentile element in projortion to its population of any place In Utah, Still that element is too much in the minority to secure a volce in either mun- {clpal or local government, andlt Is a fact that the avenues to public office are more closely GUARDED BY THE SAINTS than anywhere elee in the terrltory. At a distance a person knowing that people living 1n ene city, though differing upon religlon, politics, or other sufficlent, though ulierlor matters, must natorally commingle In every way, yet here in Ogden such 1s not the caze. While no hostllity is apparent, one must admit a total lack of that community of Interest and feeling which you find existing else- where, and which {s the true basls of all municipal greatness. This state of af- fairs has not been Iimproved by the rigorous enforcement of the Edmunds law of late. Scarce a day passes without an arrest of one or more salnta for a violatlon of this law and convictlons are numerous, The falthfal look upon this as an absolute persecution, which they know s sus- tained morally by the gentiles, and, of course, the varying reflections of the two factions do not engender the fallest spirlt of harmony. Regardless of this ‘‘drawback” to her progress, Ogden possesses some requlsites of a metropolitan place, A line of atreet cars facilitate travel on her streets and a fine electric light plant {lluminates the city. She also has public water works extenslve enough for her needs. Above the business portion s alarge ‘‘bench” as it 1s called by the ‘‘natives,” which, owing to its pleasant location and the fine roll found thereon, has been utlliz:d for sesidence property. 1In fact the ‘‘bench” spparently constitutes a clty by itself. risge and I had no opportunity to learn cooking, My mother-in-law fights with me all day long. She tried to prevent the marriage taking place because she thinks I am socially beneath her. My folks are every inch as respectable as his, but,” and her eyea filled with tears, ‘they are dead.” “Well young man,” sald Justice Welde, “you will have to find a home for your wife. “I’'m out of work and out of money,” he replled in a tone of despalr., *‘What can Ido?’ “TI’Ll get my old place In the stora back agaln,” said the wife, ‘‘and if you’ll take care of the work Inside the house I'll look after the outslde until you find work.” This was agreeable to the husband and the complalnt of failing to provide a home for his wife was dismissed. and still others are contemplated for the near future. *Several dwellings have been bu 1t and twenty or thirty are now building, Employment is now furnished to about one hundred and fifty families, and conservative estimates place the figure at eight hundred to one thousand families that will find em- ployment there a year hence. ~ This offers great inducements to Jaboring men to secure homes now while they are cheap. Specula- tors will ulso find it to their advantage to buy at present prices. The company have made no change from the original prices, but some parties who first purchased lots have resold them atsplendid profits, in some cases at ‘ double the purchase price. If in so short a. ime handsome profits are made, what will be the result when everything is fully devel- oped ? In the few other cities that are favor- ed with a first class cattle market, fortunes have been made by investors in real estate, and the same is certain to follow in South Omaha.
