By those who should know If any do it Is asserted that the Councll Bluffs post- office matter will bo finally settled on Monday. There are several who will breathe more freely when the deolslon is announced. Sandy Palat or Charlie Adams, who is in the jail for threatening to kill a young fellow who went to a dance with Sandy’s girl Is said to be nearly crazy because he is shut up there and cannot watch the glrl to see that she does not go with some other fellow. The opera house wlll be crowded Mon- day evening to witness the exercises of the graduating olass from the high school. Those who desire to see and hear would do well to secare seats at Bushnell's. The program, as published in the Bee, will prove exoeedingly Interesting. When the compositor was setting up the program of the commencement exer— clzes of the Councll Bluffs high school, to be held inthe opera house next Monday evening, he thought he knew more than the writer. The eseay, *‘Walting,” is to beread by Miss Roberta Hattenhauer instead of Robert Hatienhauer, as it was printed. The Athlets of this clty won the game played wlth the Avoca club by a score of 23t016. But . the boys say that the Avoca club did not treat them very hand- somely. When the Avoos club comes here next week our boys propese to tach them something of the courtesles due a visiting olub. Judge Aylesworth wants the Bk to call the attentlon of the boys and their parents that it s a violation of the city ordinance to fire fireorackers on the street before the fourth of July, Many boys are, unknowingly perhaps, violating the ordinance, and making themselves Uable to the penalty for the same. Up at thecity jail they have had con- fined in one of the cells for the past four days a poor blacksmith by the name of Owen Hart, who has been orazy with de- lirlum tremeus. He did mnot close his eyes In sleep for three days and four nighte, but spent his time In walking around his cell, and trylng to keep the kes off him. At last the medicine bad its effect, and yesterday afternoon he slept. Oharles Hood 1s in trouble again, He was arrested for belng drunk and using abusive language. This makes twice in one week. Monday he was fined, and now he Is upagain, He has notlfied the police that he cen’t and won’t stand i, He says he has lived here too long to be treated so. But It seems that the hard- ship falls on his poor wife more than on him. She is & hard-working woman, snd when ho Is arrested and fined, Instead of *lettiog him go to jall, she pays the fine and lots him out, The Wabash strikers are to be pald off to-dey. The force of men now at work is sald to be large enough to do the abso- lutely mecessary work, bat not so large as would be convenient, at this point, At some of the other points It has been an- nounced that they have a full force of men, that the shops arerunning, snd that therefore the strike s virturally ended. It requires a very thorough or- ganizstlon to make a strike successful, at a tlme of year when men can most easlly be dispensed with, O. R. The jury in the case of Henry Neville returned a verdiot declaring the prisoner lnsaue, pesterday. While some of the neighbors of the accured think the Insan- ity of tho old man was mostly assumed for the occaslon, porhaps they are not the best judges In the matter, for they are certalnly prejudiced agatnst him, The #mpression seems to prevall among those who attended the trial, that the jury! found a just verdlot. The old man wae examined before a commission of la- nacy five years ago, but at that time it wes not deemed necessa y to send him to the insane asylum. Yesterday morning as the Kansas City traln was backing out of the transfer, the sleeping car attached was ‘‘kicked” down and was golng at the rate of twelve to fifteen miles an hour, when it struck a freight train that was just backing down Into the transfer frelght yards and was across the Kansas City track. 'The engin- eer of the frelght traln saw that if he kept his traln moving his engine would be struck by the Pullman sleeping car, 80 he stopped his freight traln and let the sleeper crash into his traln, It smashed the sle2per badly and crushed In a car of wagons. Nobrakeman was on the sleeper at the time. There Is conslderaple complalnt about the amount of dirt which covers the pave- ment on Broadway and Main street. While the people realize the fact that the clty has no money to hire these streets cleaned, yet they do not think that when a man is arrested for belng drank, or for some other lesser misde- meanor, and when unable or unwilling to pay his fine, that instead of belng re- leased to.skip out, and leave only aprom- ise behind him, while the ofty has to pry for his arrest, Imprisonment and trial, that he could be set at work on the streets, And that instead of belng sent to pound stonethey might{more profitably be employed soraping dirt. The money collected from fines of those who would rather pay than work, who now skip out entirely would be sufficlent to hire a man and team to haul the dirt away. —— Read Judd & Smith's offer of $1,000 reward in another column. e ———— Hanthorn sells wood at his feed store. Jail Breakers Suspected of the Mur der—Threats of Lynching. From Neola, in thls county, comes the horrible news of the mysterlous ditap- pearance and startling discovery of the dead body of Willism Hayes, a yonng lad sixtoen yoars of age. , He had always re. sided with his parents on afarm in the town of Persta. Tuesday morning he started to attend the confirmation exer- es of the oatholic church at Neela. This Is the last ever seen of him alive. Thursday morning, about 10 o'clock, his parents were surptited by the ap- pearance of his h with the saddle and bridle stlll on, at the farm. Imme- dlately organizing & party of neighbors, they started out to hunt for the lad, supposing that he had been thrown by his horse and hurt. They first went to Neola and made dlligent Inquiry there in hopes that the boy had arrived there and that the horse had broken away and returned homs Ing to find him there, they separated into small groups and searched all the country between his home and Neola. All day long and far into the night was the party out, snd still no trace could be found after the firat few miles, No one had meen him, no one had met him. Late at night the search was abandoned, only to be re- newed this morning at daybraak. This moining the body ol the boy was found by his brother, hanglng from the limb of & tree, ten or twelve feet from the ground. It was suspended by the bridle rein taken from the horse. A spot nesr by was found all trampled by the house where it had been tled for some time, and a broken strap showed that 1t had pulled loose and started for home, The hands of the boy were tied be- hind him, and his feetfastened together. Death had resulted from strangulation, as his neck was not broken. prove ocenclusively that the boy w. hung, and that it was no sulclde. The spot where it was found was about nine mlles north of Neols, in Harrison county, in a small thicket of underbrush, about ten or twelve rods from the wagon road, near the farm of Johh Honeywell, The coroner of Harrlson county held an Inquest, but the jury returned a sealed verdict, which had not been made public up to last evening. The theory is tbat the boy was mur- dered by four prisoners who escaped from the Harriron county jall last Mon- day. '{‘wo of these same men had once be- fore broken jall and been recaptured. They were follwed by the 16 year old son of Sherlff Garrlson, who learned of their whereabouts near Neola, reported them and secured their recapture, Willlam. Hayes, the murdered boy bore a striking resemblance to young G:rrison, and It {s supposed that the jail birds, eing him, thought it was the sherlff's son tracking them agaln, and that they hung him to put him out of the way. Public excltement is running very high, and it Is threatened that if the men are osught they will be hung without judge or jury. The young msn was much liked, being an industrlous young man. It s said he never ald anything In oppo- sition to the wishes of his mother, and that he had accumulated his earnings and had purchased for himselfa team of horses. The following 1s a description of tne men who broke jail Henry Lee, burglary, five feet eight inches, welght 140 pounds, black eyes, slender bullt, twenty-three years old.
