THE DAILY BEE- THURSDAY, JUNE 11. 1885. LINCOLN. Tncidents of 1he Day at the Cépilai of e State. One More Commenoement Pagses at the Stats University. Young Orators Point the Horizons of their Research in Glowing Ool- ors—The Cornerstone, THE DAY AT LINOOLN. COMMENCEMENT RXERCISES. Reported by The Brr's Bureau, LixcoLs, Nep,, June 10, —Commence- ment day opened up finely with a pleas: ant broezo and the small boys seeming to enjoy the day nearly as well as they do the Fourth of July. A few minates before 10 o'clock the students marched from the univeralty to the opera house, headed by a band. The opera house had already become well filled and within a few minutes after the students were seated It was impossible to find a seat, After Invocation, Edward J. Churchill dellvered an oration, taking for his sub- ject *John C. Oslhoun, the great ee- pouser of the questions which dled with the lost cause, of the perpetuation of human slavery and states rights,” Mr, Churchlll showed conclesively what has already been proven, that slavery and the constitution could not work to- gether ; that one or the other must go and it went, A large portion of his ora- tlon was eulogistic. His manner and delivery were fair, but his seeming tl- midlty rather interfered with his memory. At the cloee of the ceremonles at the opera house, honorary degrees were con- ferred upon H, H. Wilson and the Hon. Allen W. Field, both of Lincoln. The oratlon of Hamlin O. Eddy on “Qulture,” was good. Mr. Eddy Is a qulet, clear, and rather pleasant speaker. Mary L. Jones read & very forcible oration on *‘The inflaence of the English ballad,” showlng how rapldly the ballad had risen In Inflnence until now the most popular and latest poems of our best authors were ballads. Misy Jones managed her subject well and manifested a thorough acqualntance with poems, ballads, and their_authors. Conway G. McMillan, not yet out of his teens, paid a glowing tribute to the wonderfal Scotch poet, Robert Burns. Me. ) McMillan was classical in his thoughts and very flowery in his language, adding new laurels to hls name on hls graduating day. The strongest oratlon delivered during the entlre commencement exercises w: that of Amos G. Warren, bearing upon the soctal, politicul and rellgious questions and positions of the presentdsy. His first burat of eloquence was to the effect that no reformation, civil, political or re- ligious was ever conceived or established oxcept by enthusiasts, He claimed there was no such thing as a contest between capltal and labor. He further clalmed, and held well his position, that “msn has not sufficient brain power to escaps d structlon through the door of resson that “the world was crylng, move on;” that they could only move on by enthu- slasm. He confined himself closely to his subject: ““The lack of brains.” Music was Interpersed between the graduates’ orations, and the exercizes closed with a Swiss song from Eckert, by Mrs. Grace B. Dales, after which the de- grees wero conferred upon the graduates by the chancellor. Upon the stage we the chancellor, presiding, the board of re- gents and Gov., Dawes: THE CORNER STONE LAID. After the exercises at the opera house a large number of the audience adjourned to the univeralty, whera the ceremony of laylng the corner stone of the cemical labratory took place. After Invocation by the Rev. Gregory a short address was delivered by the chancellor, He alluded to the past, the happy present. and a strong hope for the fature of an institution which could and wonld, with proper support, do & vast amount of good, be the pride of the peo- pla and honor of the state. A brlef address was then dellvered by A. W. Fleold, speaker of the house of representatives and s son of the univer- eity, who epoke in glowing terms of the great good it could secomplish, and urged strongly upon tho alumnl to assict the good work of building up a strong instl- tutlon, and mentioned among somo facts connected with the university tbat lts fibrary was number four in the list of states, but brgan counting from the bot- tom, Delaware, West Virginia and Ar- kansas being the three below. Then fol- lowed the addre:s of Prof. Bessey, on *The Endowment of Research,” after which waa a poem by Prof. Luclus A, Sherman. The address by Bishop Worth- Ington, D, D., was not delivered, from the faot that the reverend gentleman was not in the clty. The closing address In behalf of the regents by the Hon. O, H, Gere recited briefly the early days of the universit; Its struggles and victorles, until it hi become not only one of the permanent instltutions of the state but one which every citizen hae reason to feel proud of. The benediction was pronounced and the crowd dls- ed, filllng the streets on thelr meward march, the alumnl going to the residence of the chanoellor for lunch, The following documents were placed in the corner-stone: An act of the legls- lature authorizlag and providiog (for the erection of the building; catalogue of the university for 1885; biennial report of the regents to the governor; blennfal re- port of the chancellor to the regents; the chancellor's inaugural address; pro- gramme of the commencement exercises and a copy of the Lincoln dally papers. The reception given Ohancellor Manott in the senate chamber to-nifilt was & grand affale. Those recelving were: first on the left, Lieut. Dudley, of the United States army, and wife; Superintendent of Puabllc instruction W, W. M. Jones and wife; the Hon. C. H Gere and wife; Ohancellor Manott and his excellency Goveraor Dawes sod wife, The clerk's and the pres- ident’s desks were elaborately decorated with flowers of the cholcest kind, The ladies and gentlemen were elegantly at- tired. While receptions orlginslly are supposed to be quite formal, this one was quite to the contrary and every one present seemed pleased and felt that they were weloomed, as they certainly were, REGENTS AT WORK, The regents held a short sesslon In the siterncon, examining bills and vouchers, The resignation of Col, E. P. Savage, superintendeut cf the state agriculural farm, was read and will probably be ac- cop'ed to-day, and it is thought that H A, Wing, professor o f agrloulture, will take charge of the farm, thus savivg to the state $1,000 a year. The regents have decided to continue the medlcal de- partment pr- lded it be done without any cost to the state, as the legislatnre made no appropriatson for that depart. ment, NOTES Gen. T. H. Adjutant General Drum forwards the following to the commanders of all de- partments: Str:—Referrlng to your endorsement of the 13th instsnt forwarding a commu- nlcation from Maj. Guy V. Henry, Ninth cavalry, Instructor of rifle practice, rec- ommending that at all competitions the use of the anemometers, flags, etc.,be not allowed; I have the honor to inform you that the licutenant general commanding the army declares that, as flags are regu- larly issued by the ordinance department, and prescribed by paragraphs 469 and 470, Blunt’s “Rifle and Carbine Firing,” as a part of the equipment of rifle ranges—for the porpose of Indicating the direction and strength of the wind—tnelr use in competitive firlng must bo al- lowed. The lieutenant general furthor decides that, as anemometers are not pre- scribed by Chapter II, Part 1V, “Rifle and Oarblne Firing,” as a part of the equipment of rifle ranges, and as, more- over, thelr indications can not, like those of flags, be observed and Interpreted by every soldior, their use in competitive firing will not be permitted. DEPARTMENT PRACTICE. The followlng department companies stand highest in order ¢f merit In target practlce, for the period endlog May 31: D, Twenty.first Infantry, Capt. Brad- ley——figure of merit, 59. I, Ninth infantry, Lieut. Rockfeller— b5, D, Fourth infantry, Capt. Buft—52 G, Ninth Infantry, Capt. Morton—50. I, Seventh infantry, Lieut. Van Ors. dale—49. A, Sixth infantry, Capt. Badger—48, Company K, Sixth infantry, Capt. Britton, fs the only one so far with a sharp shooter. These companies are staticned at Forts Omaha, Douglas, Russell and Sidney. As the above figures of merlt were ob- talned In Jast Uctober, and May 15 to 31, there s every Indlcatlon that they will be largely increased by the end of October. Unfortunately the month of September !s given up for encampments, but a daily handling of rifles will keep the ambitions In condition for making high®cores in October. Ouat of 55 com- panles or bands in this department, only three have as low a figure of merit as 10, all these men firing in what s called the third class or as low as they can be. From tlme to time, the Bre will glve n account of the progress of rifls firlng in the department for the benefit of cltizens and eoldiers. It msy be ex- plaind that the value given to the vari- ous grades in calculating the figure of merlt is as follows : Sharpshooters. ... . . Markeman. 1st Olassman. . . 2d Classman., 3d Olassman . So that multiplylng the dlfferent classes by their values and dividing by the total number glves what is called the figure of merlt, PERSONAL AND GENERAL. Capt. Sladen is out of town, but will roturn to-day. Iwo Women Arrested for Stealing Goods from 8, P, Morse's Store, Mrs. J. H, Dixon, who keeps a board- Ing house at the corner of Thirteenth and Dodge streets and Mrs, Emma Gibler wore arrested yeaterday on complaint of S. P. Morse, who charged them wlth the crime of stealing goods from his store. Fcr a long time Mr. Morse has held these two women in suspiclon and yesterday he detected Mrs, Gibler in tho act of get- ting away with some towels, gloves, and soap. While it is & fact that Mrs, Gib- ler s married, she looks very young and I8 quite a pretty girl, but when up for examination acted like a person old in crime, She admitted the charges agalnst her and also implicated the other woman as being her partner, Both had on k dreeses, made of oods from the same piece, and Mr, orse says that they stole the goods from him about three weeks ago, Mrs, Gibler sent for her husband, who tends the lunch counter st Riley & Dlilon’s saloon, and he went to the police coart very much wrought up over the matter, It surprised him greatly. The two women were bound over In the sum of $200 for further examination, and he went on their bond as security for their appear- ance, Evidently Mrs, Gibler s the vic- tim of Mrs. Dixon, and by her has been led to do the stealing of which they are oharged. Only for the fact that Mrs, Dixon has two small children to support, Mr, Morse declares that he would prose- oute her to the full extent of the law. ———— .C.T, U, The menthly business meeting of the W. 0.
