G. 0. Hearn, of company A, snd Capt, Force, of company B, commanding thefr respective compsnles. The schedule aflr:d for eighty movements, and esch company was allowed forty-five minutes for the exerclee. The boys did rsmarka- bly well, considerlug that they begin drilling only on April 27th. The inspeo tor and judges were all ex-officsrs of the volunteers. Tho tactics have chsnged some slnce the war. Threo out of the four judges and the inspecting officer were smoking fragrant havanas while on duty, The men in whoee presence the young soldlers moved were: Inapectiog officer in fall unitorm and rabre, Capt. Derby, of Bennett; judges, Lieut.-Col A. V. Cole, of the Stase Guards, and de- partment commander of the Gravd Army of the Repablic; Maj. McClap, and Capt. Baird, of Lincoln, and Col. Phil. lips, of Beatrice. L'eat. Dadley, of the United States army, in charge of the mllitary beanch of the university, has reason to feel quite proud of his cadets. THE COMMISSIONERS ORGAN! The railrond commissioners have held their first meeting, and organized by electing Secretary f State R ggen chalr- man, and appolnting H, M. Warrlng, of Seward, as stomographer and book- keeper. As there was no busivess to transact, the tession was short, and the secretarles were Instructed that they would be In sesslon all the tlme, The secretaries occupy the room opposite the cloak reom of the reprcsentative hall, and 1t s now being fitted up for them The deek used by themwill be one which the present secretary of state has worked at for the past fifteen years, CBNSUS ITEMS, Now that the census returns are be- ginning to come In, and as they must be completed by the 1a: of Jaly, a large ad- ditional force will be required. Super- intendent Lane has gone to Omaha to ap- point the enumerators to fill places va- cated there, The first assistant, Brad P. Coek, is in work above his elbows, trying to answer queetlons asked by some of the diff:rent enumerators. One asks if he shall put pigs in the swine or the cattle column Charles M. Hovey, one of the enume- rators in tho second ward In Lincoln, is the first to tarn in bis portfolio. The coat of taking the enu neration will aver- age about thirty dollars for each preclnet in the atate. STIRRING UP DELINQUENT COUNTIES. The attorney-general is proparing to bring snit agalns® each couaty in the state that s delinquen on the insane tax and he is determined that no gailty delinquent shall escape. As Doaglas county is owing the largest amount she will probably be served first. Her in- debtedness to the state on the in:ane fand fs over $38,000, The indebtedness of other countles is &s follows: Lan- castor, $27,123; Case, $11,295; Dodge, $10,131; Otoe, $14,961; Richardson, 816,844 ; Saunders, $10,793. The other countles from $12 10 $10,- 000, maklng a total of $281.545 waich was dliaquent to the state last Novem- ber. It might be woll for the equalizing bosrds now in session to make a levy to mee! thig tax in their varlous countles, as tho supreme court has already de- cided that this is a legal tax, and if the attorney ganeral shall push cho matter 1t may make tho couuticn which have made 10 provision to meetis some tronble. 1f this tax can be collested anaually there will be no further need of leglslative ap- proprialions for the insane, ANOTHER NEW BOARD MEETS, The board of public lacds and build- ings held thelr first moeting yesterday under the new law by which the governor is made president and the commissioner secretary. The board ordered the echool lands in Keya Paha county to be ap- praised. They are also preparing to tell theold Gillesple property which was taken on a judgmen’ ssyeral years ago for 4,600, ' Toey can get $15,000 for it now, and perbaps more. The board also adopted a resolation instructing the at- thrney-geveral to take such steps as he mey deem neceseary to csnoel or estab- lish a forfeiture of the lesse to the Saline lands which do not expire until 1887 The board has determined not to spend a dollar of the $50,000 appropristed by the las® legisla‘ure until the state has full and clear titla and posseasion to the Isnde.
