John Gorman, John Mulligan, James Mapleton, and B. W, Adams were fined in the plice court yesterday for indalg ing in Sundsy drunks, and yet there were no saloons open. The remalns of Frank Wickham, who was drowned at Atchison, Kas, were brought home yesterday, and the funeral will tske placs from the Oatholio church at9 o'clock this morning. The death of this promisiog young man, just on the eve of his finlshing his course in college, has caused great sadness among a large clrcle of friends and acquaintances, The water works compsny, belng natarally mach interested In the sewerage of this olty has made arravgewents with the englneer, Harry Birklnbine, so as to make a tender to the clty of his services and the benefit of his experlence and keowledge in sewerage matters, no addi- tlonal expense to attach to the olty. This offer {a gladly accepted by the city, and the services thus secured will prove valaable. T. A. Beebe, of the firm of Leaman & Beebe, No, 14 Pearl street, lost his gold watch on Saturday. The watch was lying on his desk in the office wien he was oalled out for a few minutes, and on his return it was miesing. He thought st the time that it had been picked up a8 a joke, but as he can find no trace of it, he 1s now pretty well convinced that some sly sneak thlef has got away with it. The funeral of Wilson C. Jackson s to take place this mornsng at 10 o'clock, at the residence of A T. Rice, corner of Fourth street and Willow avenue Friends of the family are invited to at- tend the services, and arrangements have been made for all desiring to accompany the remains to Glenwood, where the de- parted one will be lald at rest In the fami'y grounds, beside his mother, who was buriad thero sevoral years ago, There will bo carrlages at the depo:, and s special train will take them to Glenwood, The lawn cutters, of the Pacple's store, Mes:rs, Maes, Asrons & Morris, after thelr experlence yesterday, sre talkiog of ‘‘doing” different. cilies on lawn snd other sales—they belng so well pleascd with the wey the crowd of ladies hauvdied them, Itlseuggested that Billy Mass g into the auction businees, Pail Aarons become bookk: eper in a shooting gullery, and Charlie Morris go into an ex- olusive mournlng goods store as salesman, being such a dignified, sedate young man. Myron Burns and Cbarles Garcner, both employes of Bray's livery stable, bhad a lively sei-to yesterdasy morning a* an early hour, the diepute arising over the manuer of bedding the borees. The ju‘ges In the contest between Judges Ayleawor'h and Loofhurow met 8t Dos Motues Saturdsy and held a ocn suliation, bot arrived at po decision. It was suggesied by one of the judues thut some wituestos from Green county be recalled for «xswination «n some points on which they wore 10t quite 81 well intormed ws they desired, but this ides did vot meer with favor, wnd July 8th was fix d up nas the date £ o fiusl de- ciston 0u the casw iteelf. The case of G. A Walker aguinst D, Goldatein cvme up before Judge Hen- drlcks yesterday. Welker olalmed that a banj» which Me, Goldstein had in his pawn shop had been stolen from him by one named D juglas, and .aat he (Walker) had bought the ins'rument last January. Goldotein proved that this verysyme banjo bad bern pawned by Douglas veral timen at his place, the first time belog a year and a balf ago, and that it could not theref re be the same Instru ment which Walker had bought new in Jannary last, Tae oourt therefore de- olded in favor of Goldsteln, The action of the ¢ unty board of sup-- ervisors In cu't rg down the small-pox bilis certified up by the ci'y council has osused some ferling (n the part of the sldermen, They o a'm that the handling of the patients was first ia the eon*rol of the cunty, but that the county turaed the matter over to the city, and that after deing the best presicls in hiring help and securing nootssaries, the county now goes back on the bills. The council feels that the agriements made by the clty boord of health with various indi- viduals must in all fairness be car- rled out, and that If the ocounty will not pay these persons as agreed, the city will be held liable, and that the county board havng put the wuk onto the city, should swnd by it. Some of the aldermen sre in favor of euit sgainat the county right awsy, while the more comeervative ones advise arbitration and further consultation with the supervisors, with the hope that the latter mry bs per- suaded, on learning all the fucts, to meet the bills as contracted. The announcement that there would be lawn drerses given away at the Peo- ple's store foran hour yesterday morn- log spread so like wild-tire, that leng be- fore the hour appointed thers was & great crowd gathered there, and this kept iu- creasing until the store was picked, and the sidewalk and street wire blicked. The jam was a complete demonstration that it pays to advertise. M.ny oyuld not get into the store, and while the crowd instde was struggling for bargalns, the crowd outeide was hav- ing a no less stroggle, bundles of goods belng thrown out the wiud,wa to them, and as the hundreds of h-nds reached frantically up In the air, eiger to be the lucky grabbers of a prizs, the hundreds of volces indulged 1n laughter, shouts and cheers, calling a atill greater crowd. The police were sent to clear the streets, but 1t was impossible to get folks to meve on 80 long as they were getting goods for nothlng, and as they all seemed good-na- tured, the police could notuse force, and so gave up the task and let the crowd hsve its way until the fan was over. It wasa great day for tne Peiple's stors, and one of tha blggest serts of advertisements. There were fortunately no serlous mls- hape, such as seemed to be liable in such » great crowd of eager, pushing, jamm/ng men, women and children. Inside the store the crowd was so dense that two or three ladies fainted, but aside from this there was little to mar the success of the event. - ——— N uce, Councir BLurrs, towa, Msy 28, 1885 ~~Notte 18 horeoy piven that the regular annual mee'ing of 1he rt ckho'ders of the Council Bluffs City Wat.r Works com- pany will te re'd a* the « flice of the com pany, No 26 Peurl streer, in the city of C uuoll - luff-, lown, 'n Weone:day, the 10 h day of June, 1885 at 2 o'cluck, p m , for the eleotton «f direct s to serve the ensving yesr, and the 1raussotion of such other basiness as may lawfully come bofore it. All on Account of Prohibition, The olty council held an important meelirg yosterday morning to cirry out the programme already outlined ln the Bee. The duing away with the salyon licenses, which smoaated to $20,000 or 825,000 a year, has caused the aldermen to puzzle their brains as to how the city’s bills can be met, especially as last yoar's council was rather lavish, and lapped over into this yeat's receipts. Ald. Lieden- topf prepar.d the followlog resolution, which was unanimously adopted: For the parpose of bringing the ex- penditures of the clty within the limite of its revenues, whion heve been greatly ourta'led by the loss of the taloon licenses; therefore, be it Resolved, That on and after the 15th day of June, 1885, the following expend- ftar: s be dircoutinued Al of the gas aud gasoline lights to be cut off, and the g+ lightera discharged.
